Hopefully I can get the first one ready for this coming Monday. :) I'm curious to see how Silent Victory differs from The Hunters.

Still catching up on the Hunters and enjoying that series very much, so looking forward to seeing this with the US side. Feel as there is rule/game similarities in this series of games it makes it easy for the viewer to also follow along. I am also happy to hear they have increased the dud torpedo role to match with the huge historical dud issues the US had with their torpedoes. Nice video as always, hoping to see this soon. Yeah, I think the dud rate will make it tough for the first couple of years. Having only 1 of 3 hits explode correctly has got to be frustrating.

Loved the Hunters, so pleased to see this game being reviewed. Some nice additional features - I like the idea of being able to challenge yourself to go up against the career of a famous captain.

The Hunters has that added to it as well, but I think we'll just take a randomly assigned sub and run with it. I'm hoping the series works out well. :)

Also picked up a used copy of Raiders of the Deep from Compass World War I German Austrian submarines have not played that yet. And whoever had it before went off the deep end with all sorts of revisions additions all laminated to where the box wouldn't even close I need a 3-in box to get all the stuff in it now. Lol

Oh, shiny! I didn't realize there was a Raiders of the Deep WW1 version of this series. I've just ordered a copy from Compass Games. We'll incorporate that into Submarine Mondays, maybe next after Silent Victory. Thanks for the heads up. :)

I'm thinking to start right with the top of the previous waiting list, and giving those people first dibs on the new submarine. So I think you'd be in the first crew round, for sure. :)

Great review, thanks Zilla. I found the major diff from The Med/Hunted to be 2 month patrols vice 1 month (unless you abort early), China Sea with deadly mines and shallow waters you cant exceed test depth in and help the enemy air, dud torpedoes are prevalent early war, lots of tech increases, new subs, and even sub refits throughout the campaign. They cleared up a lot of the earlier rules and fixed some mechanics as well IMO. Enjoy.

Thanks, Uwe! I've jotted your points down to make sure I don't miss them as I go through the Silent Victory rules. I'm excited to start a new campaign. I'm hoping it'll go for at least a few missions. :)

Excellent review. The dud issue at the start can be really infuriating, even though it is historically correct. I found sinking ships became easier as you progressed through 44 & 45, but still had a couple of close calls with the escorts.

Nice summary of the game there, Zilla. I've now done 3 patrols of SV, and thus far it's not quite as good as The Hunters for me. There is a lot of crossover, as you mention, but I think there's a fair bit of chrome added which does not enhance the gameplay that much. The rules around starting position seem slightly confused, the rules around attacking escorts could do with being clearer, and there are a fair amount of errors in the rule book - perhaps most importantly for a career the fact that each patrol is actually TWO months, rather than one. It just seemed to me like the designers went down the 'more is better' route in some cases. There are a plethora of unnecessary counters (not sure why we needed so many ship markers when they could have made them have different values on the other side, and the fact that we have one marker for each value of Battle Stars awarded is just bizarre). We now have vast charts for ship names which all appear to be variations on about 6 different ones, and the medals/commendations are particularly fiddly - I downloaded a chart from BGG to summarise the awards, but the fact that this was needed at all is instructive. I also gave up using the counters for them at all after 2 patrols (even though my commander had picked up a Navy Cross for sinking the Kaga, a Japanese CV). You are right about the dud rate - I think if I do a second campaign, I'll definitely go for an August '42 start, where you at least have a 50% chance. Oh, and whoever decided that the loadout information at the top of the ship mats should be in black on blue background needs to go back to design school.

That's an informative chunk of information to be aware of, thanks davet! I did notice as I was doing a light read of the rulebook that there are quite a few things that are different from The Hunters. And I noticed when clipping the counters that there were a lot of Battle Stars, as you mention. :) I'm interested to see how I find the game compared to The Hunters. I'm somewhat in favor of more medals and awards, as I think that they could come more frequently in The Hunters, but I'd not be excited about an overly complex system. I'll definitely make a note to check out the BGG rules forum for clarifications, especially on starting positions. I did catch the two-month patrol point in looking over the rules. That's also in The Hunters, I think the Type IX U-Boats have some patrols that are two months. I've got a review of The Hunters coming out on Saturday, and I talk about some of the design elements in The Hunters. I think that area offers room for improvement, as with Silent Victory. :) In any case, I'm looking forward to getting started with Submarine Mondays. I'm thinking that I can get the first one out on this coming Monday. Hoping we don't sink on our first patrol. :)

@@ZillaBlitzHi Zilla. Looking again at my rulebook, I think I've got a 1st edition copy - the dates are 2015, and there is definitely reference to patrols being 1 month. Even the example patrol log, which is on p25 of the rulebook, has patrols as 1 month. That's why the errata page made sense for me, I guess. Anyway, I'm looking forward to Submarine Mondays as well - though I'll let someone else join the crew, while I read the rulebook for U-Boat Leader !

Ah, that makes sense. I have a later version of the rules. I wasn't noticing much confusion yet, so it sounds like they cleaned up those issues in later editions. I'd be curious to hear how you like U-Boat Leader. That's on my list of things to play, maybe even qualify for Submarine Mondays. :) For crew, I was thinking to carry over the waitlist from the The Hunters, and give those people a chance to volunteer, then start adding new volunteers to the waitlist. So if it's okay with you, I'll put you on the existing waitlist and you can drop in once the existing people clear through. :)

@@ZillaBlitz do check my Unofficial errata on BGG forum. SV is my favourite title in the series but it has the most errata of them all. Also pock up my Sub upgrade schedule in the BGG files sections - makes your upgrades much easier to do right. You can check my Silent Victory vs The Hunters comparison on the forum too. Enjoy. Looking forward to seeing your SV run.

I just ordered The Hunted yesterday. Looking forward to that challenge of the late war.

@@ZillaBlitz That is why I got that one first! I wanted a real challenge. That and I couldn't find The Hunters for a decent price or I would have started there. I will definitely let you know how it goes. One way or the other something is going to the bottom of the ocean hah.

There was one viewer who mentioned he got to the end of The Hunted, so it can be done! Having said that, in some places these games do have a "You're sunk thanks for playing" element to them, and there really isn't anything you can do about it. :)

@@ZillaBlitz I have been watching videos on the games and I definitely think a lot depends on what range you attack from, what your targets are and of course the luck of the dice. Those aircraft attacks are devastating and I have yet to see anyone attack a capital ship and survive. Just like the real U-Boats most of it is down to luck. Either it is on your side or it is against you. I like a good challenge so definitely will be aiming to survive the war!

I vote for you running a campaign out of Brisbane , your crew can take part in the Battle of Brisbane while on leave if your in Port dec 1942 lol

Do you get to pick your port in the game or does it get assigned to you? I was thinking to make everything random and just running with whatever we get assigned. I'd definitely be up for Australia, though. Never been there before.
