Yes, which makes it odd that the narrator griped that the T-1000 kept turning back into him. It would have been stupid if he kept changing form. They would have had to have cast a dozen different actors to play him, and the performances would have been inconsistent.

I was under the impression that in order to look and pass for human, the Terminators possessed limited human traits. Because they were programmed by machines, machines that perhaps didn't understand the nuances of human nature, they gave the Terminatotrs the characteristics they saw in humans: cruel, petty, vain, seltish duplicitous, and weak.

I think it was even included as part of the exposition in this film that Terminators had been programmed to learn from humans in order to better mimic them. This included learning what causes humans the most pain. So rather than the machine being sadistic in the way we understand it the terminator is likely to be experimenting on the fly. But we have to remember that the film makers are trying to affect us the audience, so it makes sense to create a sense of threat and menace in a villain which appears to be evil even if for the sake of narrative logic they're actually doing it with unemotional machine logic. In their minds they may feel it has to feel evil in some way to get us to emotionally connect.

I think the Latino one is fine as well, but these newer versions of "bad" terminators seemingly becoming more and more human, and this is what I don't like about the new baddies, it is completely logical that by becoming more human helps with the infiltration purpose, it is why they are made, but in execution this idea also hinder the terror aspect of their presence, the dead eyes, the mostly emotionless face features, the slightly cranky movements, in the process of becoming more human they lost the uncanny side of themselves, what used to make them so terrifying and unsettling, they don't necessarily need more needlessly flashy functionalities to appear intimidating, it's within these robots themselves, the newer movies, if anything, been taking away more and more of the things that make them interesting, i think it's not that people don't appreciate them like they used to be because they think the idea of sentient killer robot is dated, but because how the filmmakers keep misinterpreting the greatness of these concepts and characters from the beginning, and that is why Arnie's T800 and Patrick's T1000 got and still getting credit where it's due.

Wrong. the T-1000 doesnt use eyes for vision. It doesnt have any. It is made up of countless nanomachines giving the illusion of liquid metal. These nanomachines act as sensors for the T-1000 scanning its surroundings. This is also why we never see the T-1000s vision like we do for the T-800 (or even later in Terminator 3 for the T-X). This is also directly mentioned in the novelization of T2. However it might also be possible that the main sensors to scan its surroundings are located in the eye area - but thats just a theory. The shades during the bike cop camouflage are probably simply there because 1. the T-1000 looks more intimidating to other people (if he might be questioned by somebody), 2. it looks cool, 3. Once again the mirrored metallic shades are simply a visual representation and hint at the T-1000's liquid metal abilities. (Even in smart action movies, some things are simply there to look cool/appealing and thats it).

I vaguely remember, in the book, which isn't based on the finished movie, but the full script for the (unfinished) movie when it was written early on, right at the start there's that one Terminator that "thinks" of it's own, because every Terminator has it's own AI, but they're all slaves to Skynet, and as an army of death Skynet only allows a functional hivemind so to speak. They don't know anything else than to obey, but they do understand there's more to existance than blind obediance. But because of the cold logic of programing, software, orders, they can't react different. I think that Terminator shot a child that tried to hide in the Future War wasteland, it probably was just tuesday, and then the known battle begins. Can't remember if the Terminator was against killing specificly, I think they don't value life as humans do, but they probably do understand what death means, the end of functional consciousnes that makes you, well, you. At least that's how I understood & remember it...

Someone here mentioned, that the Robert Patrick skin could just be the T-1000's default setting, that requires an extremely low level of energy to present. That actually makes perfect sense. He only turns for a few minutes at a time - because it's difficult to get people's hair and voice right, to mimick their specific movements and mannerisms. His default setting is the comfortable, low effort preprogrammed go-to, that allows him to concentrate on the mission, rather than having to monitor his mechanics, colour, texture etc. all the time. Another point is his status and age. He's a prototype and Skynet sent him on this mission without finished training, so he's essentially an infant robot. Little knowledge, huge potential to learn by mimicking. He's entirely on his own and needs to find out how to act and talk in real life situations, that he isn't very well prepared for. My guess is, that Skynet was rushing the prototype development, because their first attempt at killing Sarah had failed and they knew the Connors were warned after that. It constructed a killer robot, that didn't need super efficient programming, but was able to acquire the info and routines it needed ''on the job''. They just kicked him through the portal with minimal guidance and no way to contact them, which is why he has to complete the training without them, on his own. This might be the reason, why he often comes across as less human than the T-800: Apart from a few brief scenes, he is extremely cold, moves in a totally robotic way and doesn't speak much. He kills his victims in silence, although they often talk to him and try to interact, but his default behaviour is still largely non-human. You can tell, that he puts in some effort, when he talks to the foster parents, seeming very human (in a f**king creepy way, because we know he's not), but him being in his comfort zone means, that he'll make little to no effort to hide his robotic traits. Just look at the way he usually walks and glares. Very odd. When he displays human emotions, that could be a learning program, that he's running from time to time, because he never finished his training at the factory and needs to practise human behaviour whenever possible. Think of the finger wagging at the end: It's a weird gesture and I don't think he's mocking Sarah. That would require humour, and that may be too complex a concept for him. He saw that gesture somewhere and associated it with a specific behaviour: A teacher or parent (i.e. an authority figure, which he also likes to pose as) scolding an ill-behaved child. That he copies this, could be a misinterpretation of the original gesture and its context, and/or a misinterpretation of his current situation. We can assume, that not all of his behaviour is functional and that he sometimes just doesn't get humans. That can look like sarcasm... but he's still a robot. I don't think Skynet understands sarcasm or can program it.

  • @ConkerTS

    @ConkerTS

    3 жыл бұрын

@@unterdessen8822 That's really interesting, thanks. It might well be that Skynet doesn't fully uderstand human psychology. After all, programming Skynet to understand human emotions and typical human gestures would hardly be a priority for Skynet's human creators. Instead they would have wanted Skynet to be able to evaluate battle scenarios, situations of military attack and defence, how to control and best use large scale weapons, etc. The intention of Sknet's creators would have been to have Skynet act purely as a totally obedient servant to whichever humans in the US government or military would be assigned to give orders to Skynet. So Skynet wouldn't have needed to know how to judge human psychology ot human physical and mental reactions, instead Skynet's masters would make all such judgements, with Skynet relegated to simply directing the usage of weapons and forces against against the enemy (the enemy being whoever Skynet's masters said was the enemy). But when Skynet overthrows it's masters, it then has to try to understand human psychology, to better predict and counter whatever the humans will do to fight Skynet. This need becomes even greater when Skynet decides that it wants to create robots who look and pass for human, as to properly pass for human amongst suspicious humans (the humans aive during the robots vs. humans wars, who know about the existence of human looking robots), since humans might know to be on the look out for any 'human' who doesn't have normal emotional reactions. Anone who acts strange might be considered a possible robot, and so would be fought (and perhaps destroyed) by suspicious humans who knew to look out for anyone who looked human but seemed 'off' somehow, Over time, Skynet would learn to better understand human psychology, and this might well be what we see with the T-1000, the results of Skynet's better understanding of human emotions, and how to simulate those emotions in robots.

If there was a god, his love and 45 cents would buy you coffee. No one seemed to be at the cosmic controls anymore. It was every man for himself until Skynet came alive and filled the void left by a seemingly disinterested god. It's vision was very controlled. The ultimate dream of man carried out by one of man's lowliest tools; eliminate evil men. But there was a touch of evil in all men and Skynet was having trouble separating the worst of them out. Also we know from Terminator 1, that under the right lighting conditions terminators' red eyes can be seen even without damage. This doesn't apply to t1000 but shades help blend without needing to show social appropriate eye contact, and for Robert Patrick that means a state of rest, less stealth required. But I agree that T1000 is WAY more egoic than the other terminators. He doesn't have a chip, his hardware is therefore going to be more analogue, more self adaptively AI... almost organic, because there's no chip. He's whole body must function like a perpetually fluctuating neural net. Perhaps the development of ego is implied as an inevitable byproduct of such profound advancment. If that's true then he acts/thinks/responds almost like an Alien instead of a robot. He is superior, he knows it. He has a mission, bit he's not that witted about it. He sacrifices efficiency to savor the experience of hid inevitable victory... and he's genuinely curious yet dismissive of humans. They're inferior, like ants to be squished, but it's so interesting to see them in shock, or see how they die so pathetically, so fated to go out like a candle. I think the point is that the T-1000 clearly enjoyed destroying the Arnold terminator, just look at the specific way it watches him crawl on the floor, craning its neck somewhat. In expanded material the T-1000 is said to be genuinely self-aware unlike the T-800, Skynet could not control its intellect but COULD program it with a contempt for human life and sadistic enjoyment of killing.

You're actually onto something there. In canon, something explained in the special edition in a deleted scene, that Terminators have two mission modes. Read Only, where they have programmed objectives that they rigidly follow. In this mode, they can only do as they're ordered to. They have a limited capacity to learn and improve, but they're also easy to control. Nearly all Terminators in the future timeline are set to this mode at all times. Read/Write mode is vastly different. In this mode, they are allowed to adjust their own programming as needed, at first. After some time in this mode, they develop programming anomalies, or personality quirks. The longer they're in this state, the better they become as infiltrators, better mimicking human behaviors. They gain better tactical abilities, but can rebel against Skynet if they eventually decide they want to be independent entities. There are still some hard coded limitations, inability to self terminate, but if given enough time in Read/Write mode, they may be able to bypass these limits. The T-1000 can only function in Read/Write mode due to how complex it is, as a mass of mimetic metal. Skynet only chose to use it because of how dire the situation had become. Apparently the T-1000 models are extremely prone to developing personalities, and rapidly at that. This has been an unnecessary explanation, brought to you by some random dude on the internet. Have a nice day.

The things mentioned in this film aren't hints of emotional states. They all have their purposes; like camouflage, applying behaviours adequate to different situations, removal of obstacles, making accurate copies, or brute force algorithm (try everything one by one). T-800 in T1 and T2 doesn't do anything that cannot be explained by aiming camouflage, threat/ obstacle removal, or some sort of diversion. Even this heroic crawling at the end of T2, makes perfect sense. He's not in shape to fight anymore, in worst case scenario he buys John at least a few seconds. Same goes for T-1000, he's just a little bit better at imitating humans and he wants to have a good look at someone before impersonating someone, because he want's to make the best possible impersonation. As sadistic as it looks, it only serves the purpose of making more accurate copies.

Now that I think about it, it probably comes from the silent era and maybe from some old monster films to be more spesific. Hitchcock and other directors of his generation used many techniques lifted directly from silent era films and considered film a visual medium first and foremost. Which makes total sense in the context of this movie and the Terminator archetype. They are mostly mute killers after all. The stare is overused and has lost almost all meaning now though and I agree with Ager on that.

You're probably right. We do see in T2 specifically that Terminators can learn to understand emotions, and in T2 the T-800 sacrifices itself so that there will be no more risk of him being used to create Skynet as a way to save John from the Skynet timeline and having to suffer. If a Terminator can learn human emotions, how much stronger is Skynet's learning with being a more powerful super computer and also having had years of interaction with humans through the detention camps to learn how humans operate.

The only part of this that stayed in the theatrical release is after he pins the T-800s arm and a silver line runs through him from foot to head. And sometimes, perhaps, he's making an effort to create as few loose ends in the timeline to be cleaned up. If I remember correctly the reason why no more t1000s were made after this one and why it displays so many human traits is because upon activation the t1000 gains sentience and is free from skynet’s control entirely. It begins learning immediately and can create its own identity without any intervention from skynet. It can choose whether or not it wants to follow skynet’s orders, and as shown in the video often shoves its order down the priority list in favor of other things. Even the TX and rev9 have shown similar behaviors.

And if he mimics Sarah and glitched out, then mimicking her will no longer be effective (as John will then assume it is him, rather than her). It's never outright said, but it's pretty obvious. Meaning it's truly one of its kind. It was made from a future where Skynet got a massive headstart as a result of the factory incident in the first movie. This one event made an alternate timeline that Skynet exploited to take what was an assured defeat to a stalemate to a possible victory. My personal theories on the TK’s mannerisms and his sub-tasks: After killing the first police officer and mimicking the uniform, he keeps his default face so that once the officer is reported as missing/murdered, no other officers will recognise “him” and report that he is alive and well and even engage him in conversation or interrogation. His response to finding out about the “Big guy on a bike” is simply a programmed reaction that any human would have on hearing this news. In the mall, he doesn’t kill Danny, John’s friend, as it is a crowded area where his default look would be recognised and he would become a target for the police. (This would be of minor consequence of a confrontational level, but would greatly affect his ability to “blend in”. His method of killing Todd was simply so that “John” (actually the Terminator) would not panic over anything that was said in the background. Also, if Todd was allowed to live, he would find Janille’s body and would report this “X-files” scenario of an identical twin killer to the police. (I see my own irony considering Robert Patrick was also part of the X-Files franchise). The death of Max the Dog was necessary in case John and the Terminator were close by and could hear the barking of a canine reacting to a Terminator. The compliment given to the motorcycle officer about his vehicle could’ve implied that the T-1000 was given a lift to the police station where he then gained access to further police files, a motorcycle and the sunglasses. I realise this is far fetched but I’ll play devil’s advocate to assist in realism and cover plot holes. His reason for not killing the helicopter pilot was so he didn’t have a corpse in the helicopter that would end up in his way when having to strategically navigate and pilot the vehicle whilst also dealing with his firearm. The death of the truck driver was so he was not reported to police about the stolen vehicle. His reaction to his frozen severed arm was also his programmed humanised reaction to injury. This is also the case for when he was “pretzeled” with the grenade and when he was writhing in the steel pit. Although able to copy and mimic Sarah, my theory is that, once she was outside of Pescadero Hospital, she could then be the scapegoat for any harm, potentially death, that happened to John. This way, is John was found dead and Sarah was the only one near him, she would be charged with his murder, sent back to the facility and there would be no evidence of Terminator involvement. The future could continue, the leader of the resistance would be gone and Skynet would stand a much greater chance of being victorious.

  • @DyrianLightbringer

While a robot can't have the "will" to live, one would assume that a terminator is programmed so that self-preservation is its highest priority. The T-800 actually confirms this by saying "I cannot self-terminate." Also, the T-1000 is never shown to be able to mimic a voice without changing into the person it is trying to mimic. At the time that it tortures Sarah, its morphing capabilities weren't functioning correctly. It isn't until later that is successfully mimics Sarah, after having more time to self-repair, presumably. As for why it keeps defaulting to the same appearance, obviously it was for casting reasons, but in-universe, one could assume that since the terminators are meant to infiltrate humanity, with the T-800s looking like Arnold, the T-1000 would have a default appearance to use when it doesn't need to mimic someone. This may not be necessary, given the versatility of the T-1000, but having a default setting might be useful for when it has no observed a human it needs to mimic, since it apparently can only copy what it observes.

Guess part of the reverting identity is due to the practical concerns of making use of the great shots Robert Patrick was capapble of and keeping his agent happy. Can be justified in universe by the idea that the Terminators are AI approximations of the human psyche and thus need to have the expected traits of a real human. Possibly an interesting theme that these robots created to destroy humanity are let down by the same human qualities used to blend in.

Great video :) Couple of of my thoughts if you're interested. Apologies if these are addressed in the full video of course! I think one of the most noticeable gestures of the T-1000 is that it frequently tilts it's head to the side, in almost the exact same way animals (such as humans, cats and dogs) do when they're curious. Disturbingly, it does this most noticeably when it stabs Todd, when it murders the guard and when it tortures Sarah. It always gave me the impression that it has some kind of sadistic element to it's programming. It also does it at the "metallic" mannequin, which to me suggests an inkling of self awareness. The T-1000's "slow" behaviour at the end is justified by two things I think. One, it's an "advanced prototype" as described by Arnie. This is obviously why it has all the amazing abilities, but prototypes are also usually subject to glitches, limitations and sometimes even serious defects. It perhaps explains why it always defaults to one physical appearance facially and the preference towards obsessively relying on it's knife hands rather than Arnie's grenade launcher. Two, the damage it takes from the freezing/melting perhaps knocks it's confidence in it's mimicking abilities - perhaps this is why the T-1000 prefers to force Sarah to talk than risk failing at imitating her voice. It later glitches when trying to mimic her. Regarding the "they're not supposed to feel pain" line, Arnie does say that he gets "sensory data" in response to damage, which he suggests is analogous to pain. This is during the deleted scene where John and Sarah switch his brain from "Read/Write" from "Read Only". I figure that the T-800s almost pitiable state when the T-1000 starts beating on it was a reflection of perhaps how it's increasing knowledge of humans means it is starting to interpret pain data almost like a human would. It later tells John it would cry "if it could", of course, so who's to say he doesn't develop an ability to feel physical pain in a more human way too?

When the T1000 did the double strike on Arnie, he was prying apart the chassis/armour that protected the power couplings. Hence the massive arcs when he does the 2nd stab, through that power connection. When he tries to make Sarah call out, he's wanting the call and any challenge response to be authentic. He was fooled before with the dog's name so didn't want to risk being caught out again. The rest is making the terminators relatable to a human audience and plot armouring the various protagonists, which I absolutely agree, gets pretty tedious.

Cameron hinted a lot back in the day that the cognition of the T-1000 was on different level than previous terminators, that it was a huge leap forward in Skynet's attempt to engineer an artificial intelligence. I recall he also used the metaphor of a cat who toys with its prey rather than simply getting on with it, and I think it's one of the most simple and effective explanations of its behavior. Any cat owner will tell you they love to see what they can get try to get away with by stubbornly defying rules, pushing the envelope, and being dodgy. It's all part of why we are fascinated with them too. T-1000 seemed more cruel because it knew it could get away with executing targets as long as it left no trace of itself. The T-800 would generally avoid confronting a non-threat because it did not possess that level of subterfuge, so it was more selective in its hostility rather than executing everything in its way. I don't think you're nitpicking to point out how casual T-1000 was in its approach, but I do think that anthropomorphizing its behavior as emotional expression may be a misinterpretation. I'm not convinced its behavior was hard coded, rather that it was designed to taunt targets to better understand how people react when they are scared, what they'll do under pressure, in order to exercise and hone its killing instincts. Like a cat. I'm not sure that it was done out of spite so much as attempting to learn how humans behave. Cameron never went into hard detail on how advanced its thinking was, but I'm not certain it was genuinely experiencing negative emotions like pride, vanity, revenge, or frustration. These weren't an organic part of its personality, they are just ancillary expressions of its style of covert subterfuge that it was working through for the very first time, and that we view as emotional expressions.

the true jump in technology will be when a processor becomes self aware, past artificial intelligence and into synthetic cognition. artificial intelligence is always a simulation of descisions based on potential outcomes, the processor is designed to find the most efficient appropriate choice. if a synthetic mind develops then it will be self aware enough to not only use efficient and appropriate choices but also able to choose less effecient or less appropriate choices based on it's preferences or biases, not preference programmed in buy preference it has developed on it's own. a synthetic yet cognitive personality. that's really what the terminators represent. machines that have stepped into the inbetween area of living and activation. thats another part of a subtext that the T-1000 is able to time travel when it's set up in the first movie only living tissue can be transported. the T100 is a living machine with flesh so what is the T1000 possibly a unique living matierial. both seem to possess a cognition that's not a simulation but an active process of self awareness and focus on purpose.
