I have to say this movie is the most visually striking I've seen. The shots, the color, the quality of the visuals of nature and water and sky is second to none. Imagine if the "Planet Earth" documentaries were shot like this

Garfield seems to love performing roles of virtuous characters who suffer a lot but I like that all his characters are so different, all different accents and mannerisms. His range is definitely impressive, even if his Portuguese accent wasn't good

That's interesting that Andrew Garfield as on the filming of Silence before Hacksaw Ridge. Now there's just even more layers to how he was portraying Desmond Doss behind the scenes.

I remember watching this movie when it came out. The nearest cinema was 1 hour walk away from where I lived and I honestly just knew I was going to watch a Scorsese movie. I came out of the theater crying, I was deeply touched by what I saw and I was a mess on my way home, it reopened old wounds. I remembered the editing to be worse than that, but my memory is probably wrong.

Such a masterpiece of a film. I hope it gains a following in the future.

When I watched this film in the theaters. I was blown away by the soundtrack and the look of it all. After all these years I still think of this film.

Under the Silver Lake is another amazing Garfield movie/performance

Thank you very much! This was probably the most challenging video I've made yet so I really appreciate the compliment. Silence is a truly great work. It's the last novel (and film) I teach during the school year and is often the most impactful.

Damn I am gonna have to watch this movie. Thanks for introducing it to me.

So glad you enjoyed it! I just finished up teaching the novel with my high school students (I always save Silence for the end of the year). We'll be watching the film in class this week!

How are your videos always insightful I was watching your playlist because of the coronavirus self distancing uni got cancelled. Great video! I appreciate analysis that isn’t attempting to ascribe a “correct” interpretation of what walking out faith is. Im convicted that Rodrigues was wrong to apostatize, not saying that I would have strength to make the incredibly hard decision, but thankfully there is forgiveness. Thank you for challenging convictions and presenting the topic with humility.

Thanks! I teach this novel to high school students and save it for the very end of the year because the conversations it prompts are so challenging and profound.

I think Andrew Garfield had a profound conversion experience while preparing for and during the filming of Silence and Hacksaw Ridge and his working in the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius of Loyola. I think he is still working on the Spiritual Exercises and continues his journey with God. He has exhibited marked changes in the type of projects he accepts since that time. They all have to have some strong meaning to him. Silence is the most impactful movie I ever saw! I saw the movie every night in my nearest theater for 30 days, Andrew Garfield as Padre Rodriguez changed my life and set me on a path to study the Spiritual Exercises and make silent retreats. I am very thankful to Andrew Garfield and Martin Scorsese for this masterpiece of film, Silence. I would really like to know how you teach the book? I have read it because of the movie. Although it is different in some respects it is a thought provoking book.

That moment he stands on the picture of Jesus is when he no longer puts his faith in religion, doctrine or traditions of man but in the person Jesus the Christ who is Saviour and Lord. Like to add Jesus sent them out in two's door to door proclaiming the Kingdom of God, if someone didn't want it they were instructed to leave that house and move to the next one. We are not to indoctrinate unbelievers, only the believers who came to faith in Jesus Christ through freewill. There are two groups that coexist in this world, believers who live by the Word filled with the gift of the Life-giving Spirit, this indwelling Spirit comforts, teaches and leads into all truth, the second group are unbelievers who follow and love the ways of the world. Believers are commanded to love the unbeliever, the unbeliever hates the believers.

In the novel/film, I agree that Rodrigues had an incredibly difficult decision to make. As a non Catholic, I personally don’t ascribe value to iconography, but a public denouncing of faith I believe is apostasy. Thankfully there is forgiveness, as Peter was forgiven for denying Christ, but like Abraham, Christians are called to put faith fully in God and defer to his wisdom and direction in even the most difficult moments. Not saying I’d have the strength to make the “correct” decision. Another movie that explores this theme is “A Hidden Life”

That's fair. But I'm curious...are you basing that opinion off of your reading of Endo's novel?

The implied(?) unintended (?) message of the book and the film is a falsification of Christ teaching .Our Saviour never praised apostasy -under any circumstances. The apostasy veiled in compassion serves to create a caricature of Christianity - as mistaken stubborn, irrational ideology, caricature eagerly welcomed nowadays by left oriented audience. It is no surprise therefore that while Christian culture is now conveniently ignored - this particular movie is ...somehow not:) It serves well to dilute and perfidiously distort what the core of Christianity is - fidelity to Christ. By apostatising the priest simply sinned -and turned his life into vegetative state. Those who were responsible for tortures were those who inflicted them -not the missionaries .
