Former Real Madrid star Isco has had a rough few years. Why did he fall out of favour at Real Madrid, leading to public spats between Isco and Solari, Isco and Zidane, and Isco vs Ancelotti? What has happened to Isco to the point where he is now without a club following the termination of Isco’s Sevilla contract, and Isco’s failed transfer to Union Berlin. What has gone wrong for Isco?

The fact that his 16/17 season where he was A STARTER wasn’t mentioned in this video is beyond me, that was easily the best of Isco we ever got to see (playing behind Benzema and Ronaldo in the diamond under Zidane) even during the 17/18 season he was starter majority of that season as well. In Zizou’s first tenure we saw the best of Isco.

2012/2013 Malaga Isco was the best Isco. 11/12 was good too but his peak as an individual was that 12/13 campaign. He was the star of Malaga, the talisman and the engine that made them run. At Madrid he was never more than a role player or spot starter. Nice to win lots of titles but Madrid would have done it without him.

I would have to disagree with your statement. I think Isco was crucial to the Madrid playstyle for a majority of the UCL three-peat era. At a club like Madrid, with its size and prestige, it takes something truly special to make the manager to build the attack around you. That being said, Isco certainly did have his faults- sometimes he would slow down our counter attacks and take a few too many touches, but regardless, I think he was magical at Madrid.

Isco at his best is 16/17. He played a crucial role in Madrid winning La Liga and the Champions League. 17/18 he was okay despite failing hard in La Liga and doing a 3 peat in the Champions League. 18/19 is where Isco had a dramatic downfall after Lopetequi got sacked. Solari, Zidane and Ancelotti couldn't trust Isco at Madrid since he was showing poor attitude and lack of commitment. Joined a Sevilla side who's crumbling now and had a falling out with Monchi to the point of getting sacked at Sevilla. Was on the verge of joining title contenders Union Berlin but the move broke down due to final change of plans from both parties. Now the big question is where will Isco go? It's clear no big clubs wants him and his wage demands out prices the mid table clubs unless he takes a pay cut. Isco is one of those What could have been players if he lived up to his potential.

Its sad to see as I remember before he went Madrid he was linked to MCFC all season and I was exited about city possibly signing him but that alerting Madrid to buy him and city lost out. He would have had a position on that left side at City and eventually played under Pep and probably still be at the top of his game in 2023. As Hazard also found out choosing Madrid isn't always the obvious choice.

@@Anonymous_56789 That and that ankle injury courtesy of Meunier. But yeah to the OP: absolutely no guarantee he would have had that longevity at City. Madrid is *always* an obvious choice, it’s just that many things can happen in a footballer’s career to derail what would otherwise be many years at the top of the game - injuries, loss of love/hunger for the game (which is what I think is partially the issue for Isco, much like what happened to Bale in club football), a deterioration of discipline and loss of confidence from coaching staff changes (also partially to blame for Isco’s decline with the downfall of Lopetegui at Madrid) and so on. Add to all of that the evolution of football over the past decade into something much more physical at the highest levels of the game (while still remaining technical of course) and you begin to understand how a purely technical and diminutive CAM like Isco rapidly went from rising stardom to irrelevance. If Isco had been born 5 or 7 years earlier he probably would’ve been a star in that World Cup and Euros winning Spain squad (when Tiki-Taka was the dominant play style). He likely would have been on a par with Xavi and Iniesta but the reality now is that we’ll never know.

The 442 zidane diamond with Isco at the tip was magical. But that only happened because Bale was injured making zidane rearrange the team. Then things happened, many young players isco played with were either sold, like Kovacic and James, or went out of form, like Asensio. Whenever madrid went into desperate for a win mode, which happened quite often, Isco slowed down the speed of the counter attacks. This led to him being dropped more, adding to the already less playtime due to the solidification of the kroos modric casemiro trio. Players like Isco needs to play more to find confidence, and with less play time his form never recovered. But its important to remember that even in this period whenever he played for Spain he was great. But past 2020 even I knew he was never going to regain the form. It's such a sad decline. He was one of the last to play the romantic football.

He has a lot of magic and his dribbling is great to see in the midfield. However, based on what I have seen him playing for years for Madrid and Spain, he lacked the acceleration/pace to beat the defender after the dribble, and he sometimes tends to keep the ball with him for too long (seems tunnel vision at times) and slow down the play of the team - teammates and opponents would just watch him dribble and dance in the midfield sideways without making meaningful gains. At Madrid, for years the team used a three men midfield- he wasn’t good enough to beat a generational midfield trio. And he couldn’t play on the wing because the lack of pace.

Appreciate someone caring about Isco. But one observation is that Isco has been significant player at Malaga, Real Madrid and Spain. If you are a super sub on Real Madrid (or Spain) that is significant (you can say the same about other top clubs like FC Barcelona, City, etc.). To be a starter on a lesser club can be great too but it not greater than being in rotation at Real Madrid - that's the top club. Also same can be said about a successful national team. So you should revise your statements about Isco. He has proven himself at the highest level and at a young age and in his prime. At Real Madrid he happened to be playing with the best of the best and wasn't the best fit as a consistent starter. His Sevilla situation was foiled by the management of Sevilla not taking responsibility of the program with a lack of strong defense and in form starting #9. His other problem (like Ronaldo's) is the value proposition of the agents to bundle a package mutually beneficial.

Lucas got the order of Madrid transfers wrong. Bale arrived the same season as Isco, then James (with Di Maria departing) and Kroos (with Xabi Alonso leaving). He also misrepresented some of Isco's Madrid issues. That generation of Madrid was stacked with talent and on a slightly more normal side his peak version would have got into the team. Instead both he and Bale were rotation players used as tactical trump cards by Zidane. Also Solari's reign and opinions should be discounted as he was an interim manager. Guys like Isco and Bale were important to giving the squad the resources to win 3+ CL's. One con about Isco Lucas failed to mention is that Isco's passing decisions were poor. He's a very technical player and great dribbler but he often held the ball too long when simple passes would have put a teammate through or running at goal without opposition. He also wasn't great at triggering counterattacks for the same kind of reasons.

Although he had his great days at Real Madrid, i always thought he was much suited to Barcelona than Reals quick counter football, in some way after he reached end of prime it became more evident that he is not a good fit for the team....butt..anyway, he was true elegant baller in his days.

In soccer,as well as in life in general, attitude determines your altitude,I have noticed that (with the exception of few players) players who have played for real Madrid, struggle after leaving Madrid,my thinking is that Madrid is too big a club that when they join other clubs, even big ones they see that as a downgrade, hence they will make unreasonable demands like salaries and game time, but if they could have good attitudes like Ramos,di maria, robben, makalele, casemeiro etc. they would be assets at their new clubs.Even when Madrid players comment in the media,it leaves a lot to be desired, and you wouldn't find at other clubs,eg Raul telling in the media Micheal Owen that RM.only needs players who are committed to the cause,eg the recent comment by kroos on hazard,so when you buy Madrid player ,first check their attitude.

I see a lot of similarities between Isco and James Rodriguez careers. Also the point of being the focal point of a team to be successful very much is true if James.

I wanna say he just wasn’t as hard working as he could be maybe he’s got some Brazilian in him. Joking aside when I think of Isco, I think of injury prone, I think of a very good dribbler (that’s about it) and I think that maybe because he was always injured he could never stay super physically fit, and maybe the mentality of winning a bunch of CL’s also helped him not want to try. I also think it is actually over, most players besides a select few have their primes from 26-30 and he’s clearly no longer that physically fit as an 26 year old so I think he might have one comeback seasons to show everyone up but that’s what I think will happen if he does find form and doesn’t get injured for a year. But I do think his career will fizzle out and he won’t really do much else, he’s like Hazard but without a club.

Many players who leave Real have some sort of curse which makes them fall off. Cristiano, Ozil, Higuane, Morata, James and now Isco. Isco's case is really terrible. Guy was absolutely underrated and rarely got a chance to the first eleven towards the later half of his stay at Real. I feel really bad for him

If he lowers his salary expectations and focuses more on getting back into the game, he should be able to recover. Signing for a mid-table but competitive La Liga team will do him well. Possibly clubs like Betis, Celta, and the like which will use more of his talent.

He was signed for one and one purposes only, and that was to deny Barcelona from acquiring their next possible Iniesta. So, you may feel sad for what happened to him as a player, but I’m sure every Madridista chuckles and feels proud of their club’s strategy. The millions we spent on craps trying to find a replacement for him still haunts me🥺
