    One of the most interesting facts about Sigmar is that he still worships Ulric in the Mortal Realms. Despite being a god himself, and Ulric dying in End Times. What it really boils down to isn't so much a rational thing as Sigmar essentially just hoping there's some sort of a power even higher than him out there, because who does a God turn to when he is troubled and needs guidance? He doesn't even know if anything is hearing his prayers, he just hoping someone is.

    I read the Black Library omnibus on Sigmar and I can't remember the tribe, but the matriarch of one of the human tribes basically challenged Sigmar to a fucking contest, literally. I think they spent a whole day in a cavern under a giant tree and Sigmar came out of it with claw marks all over his body. He basically prayed to whatever God was listening to not give him bastard children because he didn't want a succession crisis to eventually happen. It's honestly one of the more hilarious adventures Sigmar has and you still feel that grimdark pain because he never takes any official lovers, being faithful to the one he lost all those years ago to Azazel.

    Btw, one little bit about Sigmar being 15 when killing the warboss: The Empire considers the age of 15 as technically being an adult. With the imperial calendar having more days in it than our calendar, I consider 15 in Warhammer years being basically equivalent to 18 in our time. Of course this doesn't make Sigmar any less badass, just something to think about.

    Well it comes down to the Elven/human Pantheon theory The old elven gods was either in league, created or were Old ones themselves as there many evidence to point to their association with the Old ones with the main evidence being that the shrine of Asuryan that hold his flame is that of a silver Pyramid (similar to the ones in lustria). Human pantheon no different with Ulric having the same flame that in the end times reveal that the mountain was sitting bellow a old one magic gate (like one in the polar gates) Many of the earliest human cults believe that their gods (Taal, Ulric, Verena & Morr) led their worshippers and other "minor gods" to battle during the first chaos invasion with the Cult of Verena having the story of how she manage to acquire the sword of Justice from the polar gates and lead divine forces after the father Asuryan death by the hands of Khorne (he later resurrect himself at the end) Matlan is heavily implied to be mathlann elven god of the sea that the human settler of elven ruins adopted The end times almost out say that Morr was Usirian the tomb king god of the death as when Nagash devoure Usirian did morr just disappear. The Tomb kings also believe that their gods protected them from the demon invasion before the kingdom of Nekhara At the end times Isha talks to Lileath about how the elven gods were survivors of the previous existence destroyed by Chaos and how she and her family mange to escape the void through the light of Asuryan bringing her to warhammer fantasy universe

    But i mean it makes sense. The old ones found the warhammer world much like signar found the AOS world and so if the gods of elves, men and dwarves were really old ones then perhaps the old ones were great heroes who were able to ascend to god hood like sigmar since his ascencion clearly shows that mortals can ascend to become gods. Perhaps the old ones and the gods of fantasy were just that, great heroes from a forgotten setting that found the fantasy world just like sigmar found the AOS world. And Tyrion, Teclis, Nagash, Ariel and the others do show that sigmar was'nt just the only one who could rise to godhood

    @@Artemisarrowzz eh, with how they are shaping the lore now i don’t think it’s entirely correct to believe the reason the emperor is alive is solely to keep the setting going. In the real world yeah, kill the emperor and I know I woudkbt touch the setting again, but if they did that to any of the gods before any drawn out end times story that’s been brewing for years, I’d do the same. And it seems like GW is trending towards molding the setting from a perpetual repeat of the same factions shitting on eachother pretty much equally into a much more unique narrative that has actual stakes too it. The arcs of omen, the reveal of vashtoor, the super weapon he’s promised Abbadon and the fall of Cadia has made chaos an actual threat and forces a lot of stupid rules like “no one sees a demon or they die” and other dogmatic shit you only have time to enforce when the enemy isn’t play fighting. The return of the silent king and his pariah nexus scheme, the object the Tyranids fortified an entire system or more to protect, the orks getting sent on more side quests by their gods and the Cherry on top? The lion is waking up in 10th edition. He’s literally the name of one of the books in the lore series they are making. With the emperor getting more coherent as time goes on we may actually see a true reunion and affirmation of some secret plots the sneaky bastards definitely didn’t tell anyone about. Oh yeah and the eldar can wake up a death god if they can steal a finger from the god of rape, but GW will bring the beast back to life before they let the eldar hold a W for more than 10 seconds. There’s so much new shit now, and the stakes and scale have increased and diversified far past the kinda stale but lovable stagnant lore that it used to be. The emperor in older lore is your typical dictator, thinks he’s way smarter than he actually is and gets fucked by his own lack of conviction, that’s a plot hole for the character made to ensure the survival of humanity. Now we got a shapeshifting golden professional manipulator that spins so many interwoven plans and back up plans and safeguards within even more contingencies that we don’t even know the names of 2 of his sons and neither does chaos. Either they are a contingency or they were a threat and were dealt with so thoroughly even most of the primarchs can’t trust the memories they have, and malcador was willing to kill another primarch to make sure they never spoke their names. That’s the kind of guy that would take 10,000 years of agony as the throne shattered his mind and kept him between life and death, if he thinks that it will give him the chance to win. How I feel will change when I read the last heresy book, because if they don’t retcon the fight then the emperor somehow losing his nerve is a plot hole. They could just make it to where the fight was basically even bc the gods were basically fully possessing him, and the emperor had to expend so much energy destroying Horus he’d have died before he can heal. Or GW can go hard and make sanginius be the one to slay the emperor, lost in the black rage after Horus taunted him by revealing that he’d already told others of his sons gene flaw, and that it was the only thing they’d record of them after Horus killed then both.

    He’s a very human god, so often ascended characters like sigmar are characterized as quasi supernatural already. The emperor was never a normal person and was made for one purpose and because of that his love for humanity wasn’t love as we feel, it’s a programmed love that will always make whatever choice that preserves humanity. He’s an asshole. Sigmar, however, is a man who ascended to his role, but never let it change that core humanity. The emperor is honestly more like a living computer, in terms of his logic. He’s flawed but makes himself out to be flawless, so when he fucks up some easy ethical dilemmas I stop taking him seriously. Sigmar owns that he’s imperfect and makes mistakes. He learns and he cares about the survival of his people over all things, he loves humanity in and of itself over all things so it’s survival while he’s in power is not in question. Big e is edgier and tbh could probably dog walk sigmar but I’d much rather chill with the hammer slanging god king than talk the the psychic supernova surrounding a crusty undying battery that speaks in multiple voices Edit: Tbf, the emperor had a lot more moving pieces and a lot more powerful enemies that waged war on scales even the end times of fantasy didn’t match in the human body count. Big e was created to play 6D chess for the future of creation against much more powerful versions of chaos that sigmar beats down. If Big e took a few hints from sigmar and stopped being so damn cryptic even documented evidence of his war crimes could be countered by God tier gaslighting, then maybe he could walk rn. @@Sigmar_Heldenhammer I disagree. Being cryptic was the way to go or the Horus Heresy would've have been worse with even more Primarchs siding with Chaos. Just telling them already dooms them and he knows that. Chaos corrupts absolutely save the Emperor himself. The Emperor's own arcane powers that were meant to shield the tube baby Primarchs shattered. Even the Grey Knights, who were made to be incorruptible have been turned and let's not even talk about the Sisters of Battle. Like you said, he's playing 6d chess with not one, but four Chaos Gods. One of which can see multiple futures and weave fate itself. Best not to show your entire hand to the enemy. The Adeptus Mechanicus get a pass because he wanted avoid of a needless war with casualties on both sides and skip the time for recreating most of their technology from the ground up. He was most likely going to have their religion phase out naturally over the years with subterfuge, especially when a good majority of humans do not follow their doctrine. At the end of the day, from a human's perspective, the Emperor's situation was damned if you do, damned if you don't. To him, the entire Horus Heresy might have just been simply moving a chess piece across the board.

The British Hooligans known throughout warhammer as Primitive warmongerers had better technology than Humans at one point in fantasy.

    If there's one thing I have to appreciate about Age of Sigmar, it's that it does a LOT to justify the Imperium's Xenophobia. Sigmar creates and leads a pantheon of the numerous races and organizations gods and whatnot, and all goes swimmingly for awhile, then Chaos kicks down the door, shits on the couch and drinks all the beer. And just when all seems lost and everyone's backs are against the wall, most of the pantheon... splits off to try and protect their own people above all else instead of staying to work together, and the last guy to leave kicks Sigmar in the balls on his way out. Really, all we need is one of the other gods to start eating humans and we have a perfect microcosm of humanity's state of affairs after the Men of Iron Rebellion.

    Sigmar is the greatest and most good god hands down, especially in AoS. Without him there wouldn’t even have been anything after the age of chaos, they wouldn’t have been civilisation or the many races, during the age of Myth, he ushered in an age of hope, he always has been active and still is, he isn’t twiddling his thumbs in Azyr, the stormcast are HIM, he is directing his legions, granting quests to his knight questors, giving power to new stormcast and helping to reforge old, he sends them do to the realms on his lighting where he needs them to be, he is aware of all that is happening and is constantly trying to correct the corruption from the age of chaos. And the stormcast are helping him atone by redeeming those lost to chaos, he is a war god that became king, and he is doing a fantastic job at it given the setting. Also the stormcasts chant is the best: “ONLY THE FAITHFUL”.

    On the subject of the Stormcast Eternals being more interesting than the Space Marines, it really depends. In terms of total lore, the Space Marines have more individual parts of it that are interesting, what with all the different Chapters. The Stormcast have their own equivalent, in the form of the Stormhosts, but there's a lot less written about them. Though this has a lot to do with AoS being much younger than 40K, and thus there's been less time to fill out the setting (not to mention I think the current gaming landscape lends itself less well to churning out lots of novels for every tiny faction; 40K still does it because it's always done that and its fanbase expects nothing less). Moreover, I would argue that not going too in depth into the individual Stormhosts is good, as part of a larger trend in AoS to share the spotlight equally between factions. As opposed to 40K, where Space Marines must receive equal attention cake every time another faction gets the spotlight, so the Emperor's special sons get the lion's share in aggregate. The fact the Stormcast Eternals don't get as much total time devoted to them and their eccentricities is a GOOD thing, if I may be so bold. It's healthier for AoS as a whole. So the Stormhosts are more a means of providing flavor and "vibes" for one's army. Rather than epic stories unto themselves, like the major and even minor Chapters of Space Marines. In a paragraph or so, you get to understand what the general deal is with a Stormhost, without getting bogged down in the details. This in itself is a positive, because it grants players more latitude to make creative decisions, even when using a canon Stormhost. Though you can also just as readily make your own, and they would be almost as valid as a canon Stormhost, with how little lore each gets. (Unlike in 40K, where OC Chapters will always be overshadowed by the big named ones, simply by volume of lore and their place in the fandom.) Lastly, I think Stormcast are more interesting simply because they have many quality-of-life improvements over the Space Marines. It is canon they can be any sex or gender, whereas 40K fans are fighting to get GW to make FSM canon. Stormcast can be non-humans, and indeed can come from any background. While you CAN have Stormcast that were child soldiers (there's at least one canon Stormhost made of them), you aren't obliged to. They are anyone who spent their lives in heroism, and in any capacity you like, not just strictly martial. (A noblewoman who sheltered innocents in her castle, a messenger who carried vital intel through a hail of arrows, or a healer who risked their life to heal on the battlefield are just as viable to get Reforged as a knight or warrior chieftain. The reforging process and Azyr's military training can make up the difference in physicality and skill.). Nor are Stormcast required to live quasi-monastic lives, deliberately kept apart from the people they protect. They're allowed to have fulfilling lives, even if the slow degradation of their mental state hamstrings them somewhat. The Stormcast, most importantly, are allowed to be the heroes GW always wants to make the Space Marines. They aren't (by default) the martial arm of a fascist theocracy, heartlessly enacting its totalitarian aims at the expense of the people. Some Stormhosts trend towards that, in case you want that in an army, but it's strictly optional and even folks in Sigmar's realm consider those guys extreme.

  • @stephenjenkins7971

    @stephenjenkins7971

    This is a fair point, but I think the point is the concept of Stormcast as a whole. Space Maines are effectively just hyper roided out men whom due to genetic issues can have major flaws -that and the culture of the Space Marine chapter sets standards about how they act. In short what makes them interesting is not them being Space Marines themselves, but the Chapter they're a part of. Meanwhile Stormcast as a whole are far more interesting by default. They are reforged from heroes of history and brought back to fight against Chaos once again while clutching onto their dwindling humanity as they do so. I'd say that some of the SM Chapters are far more interesting than the Stormcast on a case by case basis, but on the macro level the Stormcast are way more interesting as a concept. Mind you, wasn't always like that. Stormcast were just "heroes brought back from history to kick butt" and that's it prior to more recent additions to AoS lore.

    I like one thing about Sigmar above everything else: he’s still human enough to grieve, but divine enough to act despite that grief. I say this because even now, in an age that’s forgotten his world and its history entirely, he still mourns for the one woman he ever truly loved; Ravenna, his childhood love, and the sister of Azazel, who murdered her in cold blood in an effort to kill Sigmar. He has, in the innumerable centuries since the end of the World-that-Was, never once taken another lover or even so much as considered loving anyone else in that way, so as to make her memory as eternal as he is. He _loved_ her, loved her more than any mortal man can express, and he still does. Even as a god, he pines for a mortal woman long dead. He could have the universe…but he only ever wanted her. I hope one day, we get a story where he goes on a dangerous quest deep into the heart of Mallus to hunt down what remains of her soul, eventually gathering enough shards to piece her back together again, though diminished in the fashion of all who are shaped by the Anvil of Apotheosis. A single Stormcast Eternal who does not march to war, but instead rules at the side of the God King as his beloved wife. If Sigmar got locked in the vortex did he ever interact with the elven gods or the elves on the donut at all? And how do the gods of age of sigmar feel about him considering he seemed to have saved them.

    While I will agree that the Emperor is far more divorced from ordinary folk than Sigmar, it’s my understanding that the lore presented in the Heresy novels has ‘fleshed out’ Big E’s reason for being that way quite well: Sigmar spent two-and-a-half millennia sealed away in the Vortex only generally able to grant divine boons to his people, and still ends up divorced enough from ordinary folk that he failed to keep the Pantheon together in the Age of Myth. The Emperor spent between that timeframe and roughly forty millennia or *sixteen times as long* actively existing at roughly the level of power Sigmar achieved at the outset of the Age of Myth with no divine drive to care about His followers or even fellow beings. My interpretation of that is that the Emperor is basically what Sigmar-as-god would have become if he’d been let loose to play around without consequences for longer than the lifespan of the Fantasy world. Not a tragic figure, per se, but so incomprehensibly jaded to the mortal perspective that it’s functionally the only weakness he has left because his power compensates for anything else.

    While the emperor was always very powerful, he was never nearly sigmar's level until he made a bargain with the chaos gods at Molech, which was during the dark age of technology. Before then he was just a strong psyker, still able to be nearly killed by a human with a knife. After molech he was stronger but still nearly died to an ork warboss for example. I reckon sigmar is the stronger of the two now but most of the emperor's power boost seems to have happened due to existing in both warpspace and reality with his soul constantly in flux. Combine that with worship I mean

    @@bajscast The worship made the Emperor on a level to match the Chaos Gods, but before that he was just a really powerful pskyer -he's probably a lot stronger than God Sigmar currently, but also far more problematic as a deity by far.

  • @bajscast

    @bajscast

    @@stephenjenkins7971 'match' the chaos gods is a nebulous term considering the chaos gods' power waxes and wanes extensively. We have no idea how powerful they are, nor the mechanics of worship for power granting. The eldar gods were easily killed by a power swollen slaanesh in spite of their 70 million years of worship by an eldar empire more populous than humanity in the 41st millenium

  • @stephenjenkins7971

    @stephenjenkins7971

    @@bajscast True, the power levels make no sense, but that's just Warhammer. Somehow Sigmar became a God powerful enough to stand up to the Chaos Gods despite not having even a fraction of its adherents and maintained his power despite losing most of the Mortal Realms to them in AoS. In the lore, the God Emperor is able to geniunely match them. In Sigmar's case, he's able to stand up to them but not able to match them. Mind you, apparently multiple AoS Gods working in tandem can capture Slaanesh which is something no deity in the franchise has matched yet, so who knows?

  • @bajscast

    @@stephenjenkins7971 To be fair, sigmar is a god god, it's a proper title in aos because aos is divine in nature, vs 40k where the gods are all just definitions ascribed by people The closest comparison to the emperor is probably nagash. Physically both are weak for gods - the emperor is dying in a chair and nagash is constantly getting skeletored. But due to their combined powers and efforts they can threaten the gods outright via scheming

    Yeah Sigmar’s backstory is cool and all….. but in my heart he’s still one of the lost primarchs. The Big E found him but said he’d blow up the planet as it’s infested with chaos and orcs. So Sigmar told him to go sit in a chair for 10 thousand years before a warp storm cuts off the planet. Big E is so butt hurt that he decrees Sigmar’s name is never to be spoken of again in the Imperium. That’s my head canon and I’ll change it for no man, woman or good doggo

    On top of Charlemagne, he also took some from Charlemagne's grandfather Charles Martel. "Martel" is old french for "hammer" (the parallel is self-explainatory), and Charles Martel is most famous from a decisive victory against invaders from the South, repealing the Saracens at Tours/Poitiers, which would be an equivalent of Blackfire Pass. He then openly grabbed the power from the weak Merovingian kings, making his son Pippin the new king.

    So I wonder if anyone can help me out with some lore... I remember vividly reading a short story in a fantasy codex as a child, maybe 15 or so years ago. The story was about a human leader and an orc warboss who engaged in single combat. Troops from both armies stopped to watch the duel. The Orc initially has the upper hand but when it seems like the man is going to be defeated he prays to some god and grows in size (literally) to match the size of the warboss, defeats him and the Orcs scatter. I have tried to find this story for years but can't, I have a feeling it's Sigmar, I seem to remember he used a hammer in the fight. Am I dreaming this and making it all up or does someone remember where it came from?

    To defend Charlemange he didn't name his empire Rome. The Pope did that because Charlemange was about to arrange a marriage between his son and a Byzantine Princess. Which would have seen him made Roman Emperor but with legitimacy rather than the farce the HRE was. The Pope literally ambush crowned Charlemange knowing he could hardly turn it down and knowing that the Basileus would throw a fit and call off the unwanted alliance between Frankia and the ERE which absolutely would have created a true WRE. The Eastern Emperor was not opposed to Charlemange being Western Emperor but was determined that this title had to come from him and not a jumped up bishop. In short the HRE was born with the intention of being a fraudulent and inept institution from day one. It was not an accident.
