Today we are looking at the Sigma FP camera released in late 2019. As we have noted this isn’t going to be a review but more of a list of notes based on our limited experience with the camera from our perspective.
Before we start let us just mention that we have been using the camera with the 1.01 firmware version which is the latest for the camera at the time of making this video.

    And don't understand people who say: - there is no flat picture profile! You do not need any log, you have better - DNG RAW. Make your own log profile as you like!

    The camera provides beautiful, very hight quality footage and also stills. No problems with using zebra or other exposing tools, built in the camera. Ergonomics and button layout is almost perfect. By no means I have small hands. After use fp for a month I think that eos r body is big and bulky. The menu system of Sigma fp is simple, intuitive and customisable. You can easly adjust and monitor audio levels. I like the fact that it dose not have in-camera IS. It is good for stabilizing camera on siliders, gimbals. Battery life is around 1h., not what we used to canon batteries capacity. But look, it shoots DNG 12bit 4k 30fps full frame/Up to 120fps DNG 10bit and 100fps DNG 12bit in 1080p Full Frame! And the quality is top level. What was unexpected for me is that with EF glass sabilization wont work if you use the Sigma mc-21 adapter. There is third party adapters for this. I did not find any major issue with tha cam. Just update firmware, play a couple of weeks with it and you will find its strengths.

    Nice video, and I appreciate the insightful comments. what options are there for high frame rates? I'm not to interested in 4k. Is there an HDR mode?

    The two main things that this camera has is CinamaDNG recording and 12/10 bit recording in RAW. I don't see many people getting this to record 1080p to be honest but maybe you have some specific application where you need 1080p RAW (I don't remember even trying that). As for frame rates it can go up to 120 (in 1080p).

    A. this is not a review. just hands on notes. If you listened to what we said you would know that and also know that we suggested that you look at Rubidium Wu's video on image quality linked above (but apparently you didn't...). B. Where did we said anything about 1080p in the video? we never shot 1080p with this camera only 4K.

    You can do whatever you want. But if you want IQ than at least according to Rubidium Wu's testing (he did shoot 1080p) the result isn't very good - see his video here: kzread.info/dash/bejne/k6Cdqbapace9eqw.html

    Well, glad it works for you - didn't work for us and there are way way too many issues with it - it is very much a first gen product. Maybe the 3'rd gen in a few years will be a truly functional product (I think that this camera should have been announced 3-4 years ago - but the L-mount alliance was not ready at the time. If it was we now would have been in the second gen of this camera at least with a lot more issues fixed).

    i hope sigma will have success with the developing restart of the Foveon FF camera. It should be something with better ergonomics and articulating screen like the Lumix S1R but with a Merrill like foveon sensor. For Video they should make a own camera. I doubt, that foveon will have enough performance for movie…

    This is not good insight. I think you guys miss interpreted the market they were trying to reach complaining about articulating screens, micro hdmi and headphones. Plus your open on the lack of hot shoe. They provide one with every body.

  • @IddoGenuth

    Sigma in our view targeted a very small market (too small). They wanted people who really need 10bit and 4K RAW (uncompressed - super huge files). They also pushed for a tiny body with lots of compromises in exchange for so called flexibility and modularity which we think that at this point this camera doesn't bring (since there are just not enough accessories - this might change). Full HDMI is very important in a cinema camera (which is the main audience of this camera), headphone jack maybe less so but would still be nice. As fore a hot shoe - yes there is one in the box but you need to add an extra piece which is completely unnecessary in our opinion. There are many other things we mention like the lack of a proper EVF (what they do offer is not a proper EVF and is super expensive for some reason), the camera has many bugs and a few design flaws (who makes a camera where the battery door is blocked by a QR plate?). Again, it is clear that there are a few people who will be really excited about this camera and not care too much about the many drawbacks - we are not one of those people and we think Sigma should have gone for something completely different with their first mirrorless FF camera (i.e. closer to the Panasonic S1 but with some unique features). Just to be clear - we own several sigma lenses some of them are fantastic - so we have nothing against the company (quite the opposite - see our interviews with Mr. Kazuto Yamaki in the past), we just want the company to make products that are relevant for a large portion of this shrinking market: lensvid.com/gear/sigma-ceo-interview-photokina-2018/ lensvid.com/gear/lensvid-exclusive-sigma-ceo-interview-in-photokina-2016/

    You can charge the camera over usb, just not when its turned on. and for video the recording time is not short, its more than one hour. and get a faster sd card and you can record longer inside the camera.

    As we mentioned you can't power it on the go using USB-C which is really a shame considering the poor battery life (for mix of stills and video it wasn't enough for even an evening of shooting in our experience let alone a full day). We used the fastest Sandisk UHS-II card and got a few second - so I am not sure what you are talking about.

    It would be a more attractive camera if they’d incorporate more elegant codecs like ProRes Raw or Braw. I heard AF is weak also; a requirement for today’s shooting style.

  • @LensVid

    @LensVid

    True. AF is unusable for video (light years from Canon/Sony). There are some updates to the firmware coming in the summer - hopefully they will improve some of the stuff.
