I have the Tamrron 17-28 and the 70-180 which fit most of my zoom needs. Rather than getting the center lens of the trinity, I got a fast prime and zoom with my feet. I also have the EF Sigma 70-200 which I use with a speed booster on for my MFT cameras which makes it a 90-256 F1.8 FF equivalent. On my GH5s that thing can practically record video in the dark.

I would prefer to see a test of these lenses on a camera that will be a real target at this price scale. If you have an A1 or A9 III, you don't use Sigma or Tamron lenses (in most cases). Therefore, a more objective test of these glasses would be a combination with A7 III or A 7 IV, because these are the target users. Of course, I understand the approach, a camera for professionals will compensate for the optical deficiencies of cheaper cameras and show what is best in these lenses, but the question is whether it would be better to do these tests in the configuration in which they will be used by probably 75-85 percent of users and show what they will get (or not) by entering any of these systems.

Well, not necessarily. A1 is much higher resolution than A7 series, so you can test lens optical performance better. On lower resolution there may not be much difference in sharpness, but if you use higher resolution camera, you may notice it. And that's important thing to know.

@@Stasiek_Zabojca If you need high res, the A7cr is 60mp, and is less than half the price of the A1. So if your goal is high resolution for lens testing, it's certainly more affordable. You could buy a GM lens or two, for the price difference. Jared has the A1, because he shoots sports, but if you don't NEED high burst rates, either A7cr or A7RV give higher res, and better AF, for less money.

I mean I have a a9 and a7r4 and I still went with the sigma over the Sony. I can still shoot 15fps on the A9 and also 10fps at 61mpx

One of the reasons I got the Tamron 100-400 over the Sigma version was the noticeable superiority of its zoom ring. So smooth. The overall build quality was also better in my opinion. Here, the build quality is obviously inferior. But that matters less than usability and feel. Along with Sigma's cropped off zoom ring, I would go for the Tamron.

I've decided to go with the Tamron lens. The total weight, including the hood and tripod collar, is around 600 grams. This becomes a significant factor after a full day of shooting or traveling. While it's true that the Sigma offers slightly better quality, I personally don't find it worth the extra weight.

Canon shooter here. Although, I'm not in the market for these lenses, I really did learn some things. Maybe down the road, Canon will open the RF mount to Sigma and/or Tamron. I might be looking at a 70-200 f/2.8 at that point. You've given me some things to think about. Thanks, Jared!

Honestly, I would appreciate any of these. I'm really hoping to one day get one for my Nikon but that day isn't in the foreseeable future. But you never know where the photography journey will take you. Did you guys know Fro shoots raw?

20:50 i think it may be best for someone to start with a "vacation lens". Something that can go wide and zoom. This allows a cheaper entry and lets the shooter figure out how they want to capture life around them. ❤️🙂

The best lens is the one you have with you. The Tamron only takes up 1/3 of a Peak Design 6L bag. You can fit it, a full-frame body, and two compact primes in the Peak Design 6L bag. With either the Sigma or the Sony, you're basically looking at a backpack. For a lot of applications (particularly street/urban landscape), you want to be lower-profile. And hell, who wants to carry a humungous backpack, when you can carry what you need in a smaller, less conspicuous bag.

That's why I got it over the Sony - size and weight. Also, I have a Sony 200 - 600 if I want to do serious telephoto. 🤷

Got the sigma preordered a few weeks back. I rented the 70-200 version 2 from Sony before to test and while the focus and the weight are amazing, it’s hard to justify almost 2x price point here in Canada land for the Sony given how close sigma comes to it for A7iv. Also good point on the Sony keeping focus when zooming, it’s not so much the focusing motors that are the issue but rather Sony being a parafocal lens which you alluded to. Meaning focus doesn’t change as you zoom, while with sigma that’s not the case and there will deviations in focus throughout the zoom range. I think I recall Sony making their version 2 more video capable, and the parafocal characteristic is one of the features.

I think that the problem of the non-parfocal lens was mostly visible on the Tamron lens and the Sigma did a much better job. To me it looks like the Sigma is parfocal or at least close to it, but the Tamron definitely not. As I shoot video a lot, for me this puts the Tamron out of the equation.

i don't think gm is parfocal all the way. if i recall correctly it's only parfocal from 135 to 200 the rest is fast af motors

I have the Tamron 70-180 G1, and as a Sony Aps-c shooter it's the perfect size for the those cameras and have given me great results

I have the 28-75 Tamron, and one of the main point for me (besides cost) is weight and portability. I guess I would make that same tradeoff when looking into this range.

would these lenses be better for than the 35-150mm 2-2.8. I'm planning on doing a bunch of mountain bike photography in the rainforest?

How does the Sigma perform in video mode with AF-C on, while pulling zoom? Does it mantain focus on the subject, or it struggles to keep it in focus?

Picked up the sigma yesterday. Zoom ring is indeed quirky, but photo quality is terrific. (And I shot my kid’s soccer game on the A7IV and got some real keepers)

I recently bought the brand new Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 DG DN OS | Sport Sony FE mount, but unfortunately it keeps making relatively audible noises when it is connected to the camera and the camera is on. The noise is comparable to when an external hard drive is connected to a laptop and you click through the files. In other words, like when an external hard drive is running. The noises are similar. If I turn off the image stabilisation switch on the lens, the noise is just the same. Even if I don't press the camera's shutter release button halfway, the noises are audible. They are permanently audible, regardless of whether I am taking photos. Can someone please give me some feedback as to whether this is normal with this lens. I would hate to have bought a defective lens for so much money. Many thanks in advance.

You had me at Bernie. I'm going to get the older tamron 70-180 since I'm just starting off with enthusiast shooting. I got an A6400 a few years ago and I've tucked it into storage because well, I didn't feel confident taking it out... but this year is the year of change.

New firmware from Sigma for this lens: Ver.02 2024.04.18 ・The operational noise during video recording has been reduced. ・Compatibility with continuous shooting of up to approximately 120 frames per second has been added for the focus modes (AF-S/DMF/MF) on Sony α9 III cameras.

I'm curious what you think about the Sony 70-200 f4 vs. the Sigma or Tamron. Obviously you loose the extra light but you gain the 4 focusing motors and macro (if you are into that)

It's not the same lens category... You don't compare sport motorcycle with something designed for daily commute.

As a canon camera body owner, I buy Sigma's because the focus and zoom turn in the same direction as Canon lenses

I had zero issues with my GM!, it was razor sharp, didn't miss. But, it was too heavy. the GMII is a no brainer. But it used if you have to.

I'm considering the sigma but been trying to find a comparison between the sony gm1 and the sigma. I've been swaying more towards the sigma but having never tried the Sony didn't know what to do.

I had the tamron 70-180 g1. The amount of dust inside of it was horrible. Now I have got 35-150 since 4 months and it already collecting dust inside. I love the results though. It's super versatile and it almost replaced my favorite sigma 105mm in my bag. Maybe I should conduct the wind tunnel test to get rid of the dust 😂?

I have the Tamron 70-180 g1 as well and while it is my favorite lens, I notice it collects dust quite a bit as well. I also have tamrons 28-200 and 17-28, and they aren't immune either. It is definitely concerning to me, and causes extra work in post processing, but I have yet to decide if its worth replacing them. Sigmas build quality is so much better ( I have their 100-400 DG DN) but they are also so much larger and heavier.

I bought a Tamron 18-300 f3.5-6.3, and while its not nearly as good, it is helping me work on basic fundamentals before committing to some expensive glass.

Going to buy the Tamron 35-150 becasue I have the Sigma 150-600 sports. Then just need to pick up 16-35 😅

The fact that I could get the Tamron refurbished/used for the 900 ballpark feels like a no-brainer. The significantly lighter weight will have my back thanking me too.

Tbh if you don’t own any of the native 70-200 yet, the best bang for your buck would be the tamron’s 70-180 (short of 20mm), but if you really need that internal zoom go for the sigma.

Just bought into Sony system (A7IV) partly for 3rd party lens options, and I'm very happy with Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 and 85mm f/1.4. Was looking at Sigma 70-200, but now leaning towards Sony 70-200 II if I can get a good condition used for $2,000 or less. Although Jared doesn't like teleconverters, I think the Sony with a 1.4 TC would be a decent option for soccer. I rented the Sony 100-400 f/4.5-5.6 but didn't like the zoom ring feel (not smooth), and it is also expensive.

A TC only helps if the lens is sharper than the megapixels on your sensor can show. As for the A7IV this is the case because the lens has a sharpness of little over 50mp. I own a 1.4 TC and the 70-200 II and it works great together and has really good image quality. Not as sharp as without the TC but definitly sharper if you would crop your image to 280mm and you got more background blur with the TC. Can highly recommend!

@@Whatsgoodmydude2222 not saying I would want one but I know the canon 28-70 is popular and that thing is a tank of a lens. Sony will have to do something to make 70-200II owners like me upgrade. It's hard to think how they can make it better other than wider or longer 70-240 maybe? who knows

Thanks for this vid. I hate to be negative about the Sigma but I have to say the design choices are baffling. They've got what's intended to be a non-removable tripod collar (though thankfully as you mentioned it does look like it can be unscrewed) and the lens hood, why? Plus good construction is nice, but for me the weight saving matters more. If I shot Sony I'd probably just opt for the Tamron, lighter and less faffing around with it lol.

The Tamron is also available for Nikon, just rebadged as the Nikon Z 70-180.

Did you mention the zoom and focus direction?

Additionally for a majority of the lineup, Sports indicates actual weather sealing. Sigma Contemporary and Art lenses are technically not sealed.

The contemporary line has a mount gasket, but no internal seals. All of the art line for mirrorless have internal seals for dust and moisture resistance, just like the sport line. The art and sport lines are built to professional grade, where as the contemporary line is geared towards hobbyists and enthusiasts. Primes and zooms under 200mm are art and anything that hits 200mm and longer are sport.

so Sigma has a 70-200 2.8 sport lens so not sure why you would say that. per my training with sigma, sport indicates weather sealing and art series are not weather sealed. you'll see in the actual marketing/tech specs the use of "weather resistant" not weather sealed for Art lenses. @@leagueop2399

I am struggling to decide because I can't afford the Sony FE 70-200mm f 2.8 GM Mark II BUT I want to do professional work, mainly dog action/outdoors/play portraits and get into local sports as well, and I would like to get the Sony a9 Mark I second hand but then I lose the 20 FPS and the other one I would prefer would be the Sony a7C II for the new dedicated AF chip but then I'm stuck at 10 FPS and I have found from my past experience that it's just not enough to get the right moment. I had the Tamron 70-180mm f 2.8 G1 and I ABSOLUTLY LOVED THAT LENS so ... stick with 10 FPS and Tamy or 15 FPS with Tamy and hope that I can one day get a used Sony FE 70-200mm GM II?

Sigma has an amazing 16-28 2.8 native for E mount :)

its actually a custom switch overall on the tamron lens, not a VR specific switch.

It's all about what you want to do with it... I'm not a pro photographer but just want some amazing photos so the native Sony glass with their billion dollar price tag is out of the window. For me I just looked at my needs. For me I take 90% of my pictures while travelling and if I'm in some tropical country I don't like the idea of carrying an extra 800gr around my neck in the case of the midrange and long-range zoom combo of the sigma compared to the tamron. I prefer to stay slightly more discreet so I have an A7C and the compactness of the tamron lenses fits more with that discreet aesthetic.

Went with the Tamron 17-28 and 70-180 G1. Most likely will get the 28-75, but if the dust issue is resolved on the Sigma 24-70, I may go with that.

I have the same 2 lenses, but went with primes for the middle range figuring that is more of a portrait range and if I am shooting portraits I would rather have a F1.4 lens.

How useful is a focus limiter switch on the lens? Can this function be done in camera?

You need lens with a switch, can't do it in camera settings. It really does a lot. If you set limiter on lenses to focus only on far, it will find focus even ~twice as fast, because it won't be looking for anything at close distance.

I was excited for the sigma, because ever since coming from Canon, I just can’t get used to the “backwards” focus ring of my Sony 70-200 2.8 version 1. My other zooms are Sigma, and zoom the same as canon. I think Sigma dropped the ball on this one though.

The reclined shooting position is called the "Plunkett position." I recognized it immediately. Of course, with a long-barreled rifle, the shooter can rest the firearm on a thigh, shin, or knee for better support. Don't know how stable this is for photography, compared to how other shooting positions might work, in particular the kneeling supported position.

Sigma’s zoom rings turning the opposite direction to Sony’s zoom rings is enough to make me not use their zooms. Almost all of my lenses are Sony (except the Tamron 35-150) and having to adjust my muscle memory for zoom direction absolutely drives me insane every time I try to use a Sigma zoom.

most sports shooters run their 70-200 on a shoulder strap with the connector on the tripod foot So whilst i agree that having it removable on the sigma would be useful, i'd rather have one than none at all like the Tamron And yeah the screw style hood is stupid....

Right.. the 70-200GMii just beast... 1 of the best GM Sony ever created.. it just has all.. except price but if price is no issue.. no reason not to get it.

I have the Tamron 17-28 f2.8 but instead of the 28-75 f2.8 from Tamron Id rather their 35-150 f2-2.8. I also own the Sony 70-300 G OSS f4.5-5.6 meaning if I got the Tamron 35-150 there would be some over lapping until I get the Sony 200-600 and trade in my 70-300.

Tamron's smaller size makes it a very attractive buy, but the Sigma lineup in general seems better for me. I also already own a Sigma lens, so might as well stick with it. The only things i dislike are the lens hood covering the zoom ring and the unremovable lens collar.

As a professional photographer currently using Nikon, I am considering switiching to Sony. I was seriously considering the Tamron 35-150mm f/2-2.8 but not many people bring this lens up when discussing other lenses. Is there something wrong with it? There will be frames limitation, unfortunately and might need an additional longer lenses for shooting sports.

I have the Tamron 35-150 for my Sony A7RV & A7IV. It’s a workhorse for my portrait shoots. I know they just released a Nikon z mount version that’s getting stellar reviews. I don’t know if you’re fully integrated to mirrorless or do you still shoot Nikon DSLR? They just updated the firmware on the 35-150 to improve sports shooting, but haven’t tried it yet. I’m capped at 10 fps on my bodies.

Even though the Z8 has been a great improvement from previous Nikon cameras, it still feels like Nikon is always a step back in terms of AF (photos and videos) and innovation. On the other hand, the only camera that piqued my interest is the A9III but the price tag...

I have the Tamron 35-150 with the A7RV (10fps camera limit) - it’s the greatest! Many pro’s use it for weddings, events, portraits, etc. and rave about it, so it’s totally worth owning. I have used it for family, landscapes, some indoor and small field sports situations, but I typically use the Tamron 50-400 for outdoor & large field sports. It’s a variable aperture lens, though. The 35-150 could very well have been used in this video (from an aperture and focus motor perspective) but I think Jared was trying to stick to the exact same minimum focal length of 70mm across the three lenses he was comparing. Sigma and Sony don’t have a lens to directly compare to the 35-150.

I wonder if owning the 35-150mm might still be short for certain situations. Just thinking about what would the other long-range lens be, whether a 200-600mm or perhaps a 200mm or 300mm fixed lens...

Steven: Party at the new place while Fro is in Africa? I just traded the Tammy for the SONY GM ii. IQ seemed comparable, but AF with GMii is much better. Tammy missing 20 mm is no issue. Take a step closer. I also have shot a Canon 70-200 L adapted to SONY. Great IQ, but heavy and AF lacking. SONY is pricey, but AF/IQ/TC compatible/fps/build quality etc are compelling.

Size and weight matters, thats why the Tamron wins. Using as Zooms: Sony 12-24/4, Tamron 20-40/2.8, 28-75/2.8, 70-180/2.8 and Sigma 100-400 DG DN....

Sony 70-200 f2.8 G2 on my a1, or my a7R IV, all the time.

I will stick with my 70-200 / 2,8 GM I :) because I bought it preowned for good money :) and with latest FW update, it focuses correctly :) But I guess I will end in bed with Tamron because of zoom ring. And I am Sigma fanboy with 14-24 and 24-70 and 105 Macro and 14/1,4 :)

Referees walking into the frame are a fact of sports photography life. I have too many ref butt shots from football... with basketball the ref will sometimes apologize and I just laugh and say "Hey, it's part of the game -- we both have a job and yours requires you to go where you need to go, it's all good!" That said, the "ref butt" shots are kinda rare in the final count of what I shoot.

As an enthusiast, I have decided to go with sigma 14-24 and with tamron 70-180 G1. Sigma is a higher quality lens and sigma produces higher quality photos. Tamron proved to be almost unusable for me beyond 150mm. Chromatic aberration, problems with focusing. This time I'm gonna go with Sigma 70-200.

Up to you. You lose out on 37mm in total, but you gain an f2 aperture on the wide end and the capability of having the zoom range in a single lens.

Never got the memo that I was suppose to pick all tamron or all sigma lenses, damn

i think u can take off the tripod collar foot on the sigma lens by unscrewing the bottom bits with an allen key, not the easiest but could be done.

It’s just a shame that the limit of 15fps is imposed by Sony and not a limitation to what the Sigma and Tamron could do. Sony doesn’t want the consumer to have the choice of a much closer performing lens at a considerably lower price. With the ability of third-party lens manufacturers to often produce glass as good, (or at least so close that you won’t normally be able to tell the difference) Sony has to give more reason to justify spending nearly twice as much. Other camera makers don’t impose limitations like this and instead work to produce lenses that are perceptibly better in various aspects to justify the higher cost for their lenses. Sony has decided to hamstring the competition by imposing certain limits. Jared should clearly say the limitation is imposed by Sony and not leave viewers to believe it’s Sigma or Tamron that can’t achieve X level of performance. I know he knows this so why not say why the limit is there?

Yep. It is kind of unfair competition. Moreover, I suggest Sony has influence on Sigma and Tamron lens release policy, why do you think there were almost none good 50mm lenses for a while? Shitty 50 1.8, bulky and pricy Zeiss 50 1.4, slow macro 50 2.8, shitty but small 50 2.5 G and super expensive and heavy 50 1.2? and then BOOM and we have 50 1.4 GM and 50 1.4 Art? I think it is kind of agreement for to do not let 3rd party lens manufactures to take all sour from Sony cake. Because when there is no good alternative, people are buying 50 1.2. The same with Sigma 70-200 f/2.8. They released it AFTER Sony

In my mind, there’s only one circumstance that I think someone should use a 3rd party lense on an A9 or A1. And that’s if Sony does not make that lense such as the Sigma 35mm f1.2 or Tamron 35-150 f2-2.8. Otherwise, If you’re going to pay for 20/30/120 fps you should buy the lenses to get you the 20/30/120 fps or look at another body.

What if you do landscapes wildlife? You get a 200-600mm Sony with full fps for wildlife but you use sharp 3rd party when you go shoot landscapes. Just a thought..

I would say it depends on your use case. Say someone has an A1 or A9III and 95% of the time they do not need a 70-200m, it might not be financially justifiable in that case then to spend extra for the Sony for the 5% of the time they use it.

@@craigmantle5362 That’s honestly a very fair scenario that I hadn’t thought of. Tbh, I was talking more about sports, wildlife and other fast action, but sure! Absolutely, if you’re in a situation where you would be using the camera for both purposes, it makes total sense.

@@AmaraARW tbch, I can’t think of a single photographer who would use an A9 or A1 and not need or use a 70-200 outside of 5% of the time 🤔 maybe a super dedicated wildlife photographer, I guess? Regardless, if you spend the 6000+ on either of these bodies, you should also be ready to spend the money on the lenses to get the most out of those bodies. And now that I think about it, if you have a lens you only need 5% of the time, you should probably just rent it instead of buying it flat out.

@@craigmantle5362 If you are doing landscapes and wildlife I would probably go with the A7RV for higher resolution, and the ability to switch to APS-C in that higher resolution to get a little more reach for wildlife. That is unless you are shooting really fast motion wildlife, in which case the 10fps and rolling shutter could be an issue, but I shoot those same things and it hasn't been an issue. I also can't afford the Sony telephoto lenses, so I am not going to pay for more fps on a more expensive camera knowing I can't get those rates without buying a $12,000 sony lens.

There is the Nikon rebranded 70-180. Both can be adapted using Megadap etz

For the size and mobility, being a Sigma, gonna have to lean towards Tamron.

That is called the upskirt shooting style

The new Sigma says it is actually 1,805g* which makes it actually insane.. I was going to jump all over it, but that seems crazy to carry for sports or weddings.

Prefer internal zoom ring! :)

I wish Sony would make a g master 35-150.

Sigma also has a nice 16-28 f2.8. Having the 16-28, 24-70 and now the new 70-200 f2.8 is fantastic.

I recently bought the brand new Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 DG DN OS | Sport Sony FE mount, but unfortunately it keeps making relatively audible noises when it is connected to the camera and the camera is on. The noise is comparable to when an external hard drive is connected to a laptop and you click through the files. In other words, like when an external hard drive is running. The noises are similar. If I turn off the image stabilisation switch on the lens, the noise is just the same. Even if I don't press the camera's shutter release button halfway, the noises are audible. They are permanently audible, regardless of whether I am taking photos. Can someone please give me some feedback as to whether this is normal with this lens. I would hate to have bought a defective lens for so much money. Many thanks in advance.

G2 100% better. Better af, has image stabilization for low light or video. Sharper just overall much better

@Cydu06 I have the g1 and felt I couldn't justify reinvesting in the same length lens from the same company. I know the Sony 70-200 GM 2 compared to the G1 is miles better due to the back focusing issue. I just hoped it wouldn't be that much better. Plus, that Tamron 35- 150 2 -2.8 makes the 70-180 seem obsolete but is costly....Its the G.A.S

Great Review Jared but in the End, I much prefer the new Sony G 70-200 F4 macro Lens for the size and versatility

I'll just stick with the 70-180 orginal, I haven't found something it doesn't do well. Also, is the child the same kid that you shot at the beach a few years ago? She was still a baby then I think.

Why is it that third party lens manufacturers always make black lenses? I prefer black, but you know when you see a white first-party lens, that it's the "professional" model. Does Sony have some sort of agreement that third-party lenses can't be white? It sounds dumb, but it would seem to me that the perception of their sports lenses would be higher if they matched the color of Sony's high end lenses.

I am sad that I waited so long for the Sigma. Just no way I could buy it. Big, heavy, screw on hood, zoom on the end, non removable tripod mount... etc. I would sacrifice the 20mm and get the Tamron.

I was watching another comparison and he said that because the sigma has so much focus breathing, the 20mm is actually a lot less. They magnify almost the same. I think it was Dustin Abbott. Watch that video and you'll see.

In summary, it's worse than Sigma's in almost every aspect (contrast, focus, etc.). It's GM I For full info, check his review of the Sony GM II.

Tamron all the way for the quality combined with the weight. I hate heavy lenses.
