Just for anyone who is also very interested in this lens for video, the L mount version allows for linear focus pulling with an adjustable throw of 90 to 720 degrees. I'd assume it's a setting you set in the camera (the fp for me) just like the other sigma lenses with this feature.

Although it is very fast, it won't be able to retire my Sony 24-70mm F2.8 I very soon because of the not wide enough 28mm and the not close enough 45mm.

As someone who uses a 35 1.4 GM and 70-200 2.8 GM as my main two lenses, this would offer me more flexibility in my wide focal range and let me keep the shallow DOF look when I want to hide the background. I’ve been thinking about replacing the 35 with a 24, but this 28-45 would probably be the choice now that it exists!

Good call on the 18-35 1.8 effective focal range equivalence. In my Sony FS5 days the 18-35 1.8 basically lived on the camera for running around shooting B-Roll. This 28-45 lens on any of the full frame Sonys will be a fantastic run around B-Roll lens.

I see a lot of reviewers who aren’t aware of this and express surprise that the lens is focusing when the front of the lens is closer to the subject than the distance the manufacturer quotes.

Probably missed it, but the real feature of the 18-35mm is the compatibility with Metabones on m43. I am still a m43/L-Mount user and primarily use Sigma EF ART on both L mount and m43 with both Speedbooster styles (m43) and the MC-21 with the Aurora filter modification. I would like to see a feature of the 18-35mm with 0.71x Speedbooster on G9 II versus the 28-45mm on an S5 II for video focus performance in AF/MF where PDAF and Manual/Linear settings are compared.

As per the price - if this would be branded "SONY", it would cost twice as much. For such type of very fast zoom lens I think the price is reasonable. It makes much more sense to me than the SONY 24-50mm f/2.8, which costs just 200 USD less and is 1.3 stops slower. Actually I was hoping for such lens to come as I really wanted an full frame version of the Sigma 18-35. So I'm really glad about this lens! And seeing the nice rendering of the out of focus areas, it is really tempting. I used to have the Sigma 24-35 f/2.0 and it was a great performer - sharp and with a great bokeh. And it also outperformed the prime lenses at the time it was made.

I assume the 40 is much better wide open, because there are nearly no primes who can stand against the 40… But the 40 ist no Zoom! If you need/want the possible bit of quality still take the best primes. If you need flexibility take zooms, because what gives you the better quality from the prime, if the picture contains not everything needed…

It actually stretches almost to 70mm in APS-C 4K video with equivalent f/2.8, so it's even better than using the original 18-35/1.8 for video on APS-C only.

as cool and useful it might be, i cant see myself using it because of its weight and length. i also agree with your opinion on the price, if it was cheaper i would consider getting one because i dont have a fast lens as of now.

I don't understand why nonlinear focus is still the standard tbh. Linear focus works perfectly fine for fully manual lenses. I guess maybe focus by wire lenses have to compensate for the electronic focus ring being less precise?

It might be better optically than most Sigma f/1.4 Art primes, but I don't think it beats the 40mm f/1.4 Art DSLR design lens, and the 28mm DSLR design might also be a bit better a bit at same apertures in the corners at least.

Cool lens, but I'll stick with my adapted 18-35 until the price comes down. The 18-35 still has 25-35mm range with no vignette in full frame. If using both full frame and apsc modes for video, the 18-35 gives you an equivalent 25mm-56mm range vs the 28-72mm for the new lens. The 18-35 is still crazy versatile for a cheap fast lens. And the close focusing distance on the 18-35 is insanely close.

28-45mm is pretty much the perfect wide-to-standard focal range IMO. I rarely shoot wider than 28mm, and ~43mm is the true “normal” focal length for full-frame sensors (side note: we need more 43mm lenses!). I do wish this were a more compelling video lens, but the trade-offs are understandable.

I just dont understand this lens focal range. I've been looking at getting the new sigma 24-70 2.8 mk2 because i've had lots of scenarios where my 28-75mm wasn't wide enough, but when i slap on my 16-28 it is too wide and not flexible. The 1.8 is cool but i'd rather just use the primes and move around because they are lighter and better.

The problem is that for the same price, you can get the Tamron 35-150mm f/2.0-2.8. An important note: in the 35-45mm range, the Tamron still maintains an f/2.0 aperture (it only goes to f/2.2 at 50mm). It is 5mm longer and 215g heavier than the Sigma. Additionally, the Tamron 25-50mm f/2.0 is coming, which according to rumors, will be half the size, half the weight, and half the price of the Sigma 28-45mm f/1.8. And Sony is about to release Sony 24-70mm f/2.0 for the price (again, rumors) between this Sigma and Canon 28-70mm f/2.0. While it is the brightest full-frame zoom ever made, it doesn't offer enough in terms of range, size, and weight to be truly competitive with what's already available on the market, especially considering what's about to be released (such as the aforementioned Tamron 25-50mm f/2.0).

I honestly think the 2x zoom of the 18 35 just makes it that little bit more flexible. it this was a hair wider and a touch tighter people would love it - while I think the wieght is a bit of a turn off Not sure why they didnt just do a 28-70 f2 its more of a head line for them with the hype train now being 1,8 but for more reach and losing a1/3 of a stop i think more people in the long run would be happy especially at halve the price of the canon 28-70 while the canon shooters couldnt even get it!
