I have both lenses. The Tamron for my Sony A9 and the Sigma for my Leica SL-2. My owners review, Sigma is bigger, but just a half pound heavier, expected since to cover the wider 24mm it has an 82mm filter vs. the 67mm. Both lenses are sharp and fast AF enough. For my SL-2 I like the better manual focus with the 5.7mp Leica EVF. I also love the look and premium feel of all metal Sigma Art, on a $6,000 camera it looks like a Leica class product and matches well with the camera. I would say I am happy with both, but if you have the money get the Sigma Art.

The zoom lock is actually very handy. My sigma is used and when facing down the lens can actually fall all the way to 70mm or just slide out a little with too much movement at the wrong angle, so especially when travelling it’s nice to have the lock.

I spent a lot of time thinking about which one to get. But in the end I went for the Sigma because I'm using it mostly indoors on a tripod, so weight and size is not that important. And the minimum focusing distance of the sigma is extremely good when doing product reviews as I do. Also I really love having the 24mm wide angle. And I also love the bokeh. The sigma is such great value for money!

@@MicaelWidell I know lenses tend to accumulate dust over time regardless of the manufacturer but If dust is being pumped at such a rate as being reported by owners of this lens over various forums then moisture and fungus can sneak in very easily. And that's what I'm mainly worried about. Good to know that you haven't faced such issue yet. thanks

Great review! Thanks for sharing man! (yes, I`m late here :). I'm really thinking about to change from Tamron to Sigma, I miss these extra 4mm and my zoom ring is really hard, I can change the zoom when mounted on the gimbal (maybe I have a defective unit). I have one (problem dumb) question for you: I saw you have 2 different sizes of VND instead using step up ring. Do you think step up ring from 67mm to 82mm is "too much"? Im asking this cause I'm really considering to do tthat (67-82). Any thoughts? Kind regards, gold content here!

Nice comparison. I shot with the Tamron for a year and a half on the a7RII and then a7RIII and at first was really high on it, but the sharpness at 70mm always bugged especially recently when I found shots I took at 70mm unusable in my opinion which soured me on the Tammy a lot. So I decided to pick the up the Sigma and so far I've been really happy with it, though it sucks that I had the 67mm Freewell filters for the Tammy and the 24GM. I'll have to pick up 82mm for the sigma now... but at least I'll be able to use them on the 100-400GM with a step up ring, so there's that.

  • @PanzerIV88

Thanks a lot for this video, it is by far the very BEST comparison I've seen even if it's 2 years old. I just bought a (Sony A7IV) and wasn't sure if I would return the Sigma 24-70 I just bought to get the Tamron instead but no... it has a cheaper build quality, worse warranty/customer-service, worse sharpness and contrast that another video was saying it was better but it's a lie and also pretending it had better bokeh while that would had been surprising with only 9 blades instead of 11. Then the huge deal-breaker of 4mm less at the wide end... and I couldn't care much about 200$ saving, mostly with the sales of Sigma around christmas. The only advantage was 300g less but when you've tried a 2100g (Sigma 150-600mm) you realize that 540 to 835g is a joke anyway.

  • @NikkThompson

Definitely excited to see this video, from you. Which you did a perfect job covering all aspects, and I couldn't have asked for a better video. I bought the Tamron, because it was available well before the sigma. Shooting with the a7r3, on top of all your other reasons, I would prefer the sigma. Tamrons still a great lens, though I find myself never using it. 17-28 and 70-200 are my main used Lens on my 2 cameras. I think partly because the 28mm isn't wide enough, as most my shots on the 17-28 aren't at the wide end. On that note as well, I would also prefer the 14-24 sigma, VS the 17-28 Tamron, as again 17 isn't 14, and at least in my case, the 17-28 is more of a 24-28 filler.

I have an a7iii and the Tamron trinity. Mainly down to that cost:performance scale. I think I spent $100 more to get the 17 28 and 28 75 than I would’ve for the sigma (but it wasn’t available, and I definitely didn’t have the budget for the Sony g master. A lot of my shots on the 17 28 are above 24mm too, but I love using it wide when running after my toddler or using the camera as an expensive webcam. What’s great is I don’t think there’s a wrong choice with these lenses.

Interesting comparison as I've managed to snag a Sony A7ii for a VERY low price and it will come with the kit lens 28-70 which is OK from reading reviews but I'm after a F2.8 weather sealed lens to pair with the A7ii. I'm primarily a Fuji shooter so this is my first FF camera and as I'm quite invested in the Fuji X System I don't see myself really fleshing out the Sony E Mount system excessively. So it's either the Tamron or the Sigma lens. The Sigma lens is quite a bit more expensive where I am, about 35% more expensive for the Sigma. I find with my X-T3 I run my 16-55 F2.8 the most. I can afford the Sigma or Tamron but as a value proposition as well as capabilities wise. What would you purchase for an older Sony body like the A7ii? I really wish the Tamron was 24mm at the wide end as that is a focal length I like using as I mostly shoot landscapes and architecture.

Hi William, greetings from Berlin. Great comparison as always: thorough, clear and well argued. I am still shooting with the m43 GX9 + PL12-60 (and X100V - my daily camera), and am curious about entering full frame eventually for travel zoom needs. (It won't be soon though - I'm waiting for a rangefinder-style FF camera.) I am also curious about a Fuji kit for this purpose, with the 16-80 f4. I would be very curious to see a comparison video between this A7 full frame kit vs the Fuji APS-C 16-80 kit, vs the m43 12-60 kit. How much detail and sharpness is to be gained by each upgrade in sensor size, and between each of these great lenses? It seems the crop sensor lenses benefit with longer reach and less weight, but sacrifice light gathering. But how much does each factor matter? This must be a big question for many of us, and I bet you would make an excellent comparison video of all three options.
