Sigma 18-35mm 1.8 DC HSM Art & MC-11 - Video Autofocus Test (FX3)

Фильм және анимация

The video autofocus is tested on the sony FX3 (similar to the FX30)
How smooth are the focus pulls and how strong is the bokeh jitter in the out of focus background. Tested at 35mm, 24mm and 18mm with Eye AF and with different transitions speeds.
The Sigma 18-35mm 1.8 DC HSM Art is a lens that was developed for APS-C cameras, but it can still be partially used on FullFrame and the autofocus performance should not be affected. With the MC-11 adapter this is an interesting option for FX30 users who already own this lens.

Man the autofocus is surely useable. It's fast enough. Thanks for your sharing the test is informative.

For this, we would have to define „professional“ first… I wouldn’t use it on a large set with sound. The autofocus is not excessively loud, but at the latest in an interview situation, not only the soundperson would kill you with a glance. I don’t see a problem with music videos, although I would actually only use it with artistic intention on a full frame camera because of the dark or blurred corners. So with the FX30 the lens is much more versatile. As you can see, the autofocus works amazingly well for it’s age, on the whole it’s just the volume that keeps it a bit away from what I would consider a professional set.

Blessed, I've been looking for example footage of this combination and finally found it. Unless I was going for a stylized skateboard video look like at 1:18 I wouldn't use this lens at 18mm. What do you think about the rest of the zoom range? Do you only use 24-35 mm range? Do you recommend using this combo? I've got a Sigma 18-35 and I'm thinking of getting an FX3 as my next camera. Then later on I'll get a full frame lens.

For me, this lens is very much on the stylized page in the entire zoom range, as you get interesting bokeh between 24 and 35mm in the edges of the image. If you already have the lens anyway, I find the combination with full frame absolutely usable and recommended.

Well, the lens is made for APSC cameras like the FX30, so the image is narrower than in this test video, but that’s what it’s designed for. If you want to compare it with full frame lenses, it corresponds to the viewing angles of approximately a 24-50mm and the depth of Field of 2.8. I think this lens is very suitable for the FX30, because so far there are not really APS-C zoom lenses with f1.8 on the marked. It is rather less suitable on the FX3 as you can see at 18mm, but it shows how amazingly well the autofocus works. I hope this was able to answer the underlying question.

so this combo will work on my FX30? I just want to make sure before buying the adapter...I have the sigma 18-35mm f1.8. I need continuous video autofocus (face n eye detection would be great too!)...but I read somewhere that video autofocus will only work with Sigma lenses and that using Canon cropped lenses (I have several STM lenses for my Canon 90D) will not give me video autofocus? Thanks a lot for the help

If the combo works on the FX3, I am 99% sure that it will work like this on the FX30 (and thanks to APS-C, this should be an even better combination). With Sigma EF lenses, the adapter works wonderfully, even with eye AF (As you can see in the video). Canon fullframe lenses physically fit on the adapter, but the autofocus does not work. Canon EF-S lenses do not physically fit on the adapter in the first place.

I can't get a canon sl2 to fo autofocus with this lens on video. Might a be a lens problem? Or a camera problem

This sounds more like a problem with the camera or wrong settings. Does the autofocus work in photo mode? With my ancient T2i, the autofocus works in both modes (although the camera has no video autofocus to be taken seriously, but I can press the shutter the focus works)

I just tried it again and couldn’t find any unusual jiggle with IBIS. Have you tried whether the automatic corrections (distortion, shading, CA) make a difference? Or if for some reason the mm setting of the lens is not transmitted to the camera or you have set it to manual so that the wrong focal length may be stabilized?

@@draddy2444 I would have to see example material to assess whether what you describe is normal or not. I don't think Sony has ever had the best image stabilizer on the game. Often a slight pump can be seen when the IBIS „freedom of movement“ is exhausted. I can't describe it better, but maybe you know what I mean. But if it’s really jerky, it sounds more like another problem and than if it should be better.

@@draddy2444 I find it interesting - I will record a few clips tomorrow for safety and show them to you, then you can better assess whether we are talking about the same phenomenon. I was never a big fan of the IBIS, but I definitely wouldn't call it bad or jerky. I find it mainly… Unmusicaly… Like someone who can't dance. It works, but it's a bit off and not like you would expect it to move.

Well, I’m afraid, on the one hand, the IBIS was originally designed for photos, and on the other hand, I think Sony has become somewhat limited with the physical size of the E Mount. If you look at the sensor from the front, you can see that the corners almost disappear behind the mount. I can well imagine that this restricts the freedom of movement of the IBIS or reduces the image circle that ends up on the sensor. None of this is supposed to be an excuse, but I can well imagine That Sony itself is not happy with it. Maybe they will get creative as the space for Cameras with good autofocus and IBIS for filmmakers gets narrower with the Panasonic S5II

Why is there no E mount version of this lens ?

  • @deadendboredom

    @deadendboredom

Unfortunately, there are some lenses, of which there is no E Mount variant yet (Dez 2022). Among others, the 50mm f1.4/1.2 and the 70-200mm f2.8, which there are at least rumors that an E Mount version could come. I can imagine that either the demand is not high enough (the FX30 is only now strengthening the APS-C area), or because a new construction with current technology and silent motors is complex. It should also be remembered that this Lens works technically excellent with the MC-11 adapter.

This lens was already born right before any of the Sony A7 full frame are even produce. The lens was released in 2013, and it only appeared on canon EF mounts then became REALLY popular when the Panasonic GH4 started adapting it the Metabones Speedbooster. So most if not all of the Panasonic or even canon users who moved to Sony full frame probably already have this lens, so they're able to use it. Its probably due for another update on this lens, and I would assume E mount is definitely will be made!
