To those questioning Sifan Hassan's greatness, of course she is an all-time great. She has 3 Olympic medals, 2 of them gold, and 6 World Championships medals, 2 of them gold. She is far and above world class at every distance from the 800m to the marathon. 1:56 all the way to 2:13 is completely bonkers. There may be individual athletes that can beat her at individual distances, but from a holistic view in all distances, no one comes close. I, for one was tickled to see her go to the lead in front of the pacer, because I love to see racing take precedent. First and foremost, the race is a race to the line and not a time pursuit. The implementation of a pacer is to assist those who need times, but it is an informal construct inside a race where the objective to win should still be respected most. That's something we try to cling to at The Portland Track Festival. Respecting just how good Hassan is, I didn't even consider the thought that Elise Cranny could win until she was leading the race in the final laps. Hassan had run 14:34 at the Pre Classic a couple weeks ago, but since mixing into the marathon, she has not displayed the quantity of sharp and devastating results on the track that she has in the past. Part of commentary is to wonder the unthinkable as it comes into the picture. If Cranny had beaten Hassan in Portland, it would have been the result of a lifetime because of Hassan's great stature, and a defining result in Cranny's career which includes many wins on the domestic level and a 14:33 5000m, but not one in a virtual match race of this calibre. Entertaining that thought as they separate themselves late in the race paints a greater picture. It is always a privilege to have Hassan race in Portland, not only because of her all time great status, but because of the unique and fearless way she approaches racing and does what she wants. To those who view the sport through standard-chasing, that can look villainous, but we love it.

The Gold she got was time when big names were injured. That was her luck. She's not great, could make a case for the Dibaba sisters. They were great athletes. Vivian Cheruiyot and Ayana too. Even the American runners used to beat SH in 1500m. Imagine getting beat by Us runners in a race that's not their specialty. Of course she started winning after she joined up with the sleazy coach. But no matter, the great Ethiopians, Kenyans, are still showing her up.

she did go from late winter marathon to 5k/10k on the track again. not many examples of athletes who do that well. and not performing so far up to her old standard or that of the best competitors in races so far ty (though yes it's early). so i don't think jeff's commentary was far off base. the other guy sounds like eric jenkins whom i heard on a track broadcast with citius. and he's...just not good. his fixation on hassan passing the pacer - mentioning it nearly every lap while the pacers were in there was just odd.

Commentator who was clearly biased against Hassan for going out front might want to consider that Hassan knew the pace wasn't enough or too borderline for people to meet the qualifying time standard.

For the folks saying Hassan is washed, please keep in mind that she ran 14:43 and over at the Kenya trials Miss Kipyegon ran 14:46....Is Kipyegon washed too? The argument against Hassan is pure ageism. She's 31, so all the talking heads are predicting her demise. I, on the other hand, say Hassan is competitive in any race for at least 2-3 more years. She'll "retire" to the marathon and be a force in that until about 40. But even at 40, she'll still go sub 2:00 in the 800 meters. Jeff Merrill, you need to give Hassan her flowers. Take her to dinner, bro. Wine her and dine her.

It's incredible how Sifan fell into a brutal decline, competing with second-tier athletes who are never even invited to a diamond league! the 1500m 5000m is forgetting her in the last meetings she hasn't even managed the podium with some obstacles in between lol, the 10,000 could be the best distance currently for her. I think she's lost her speed since she started the marathon!

Sifan Hassan was just too good. She ran the most part all by herself. She is in a class of her own, and the last 100 meters showed she had a lot of energy left. So the record is still not safe. Cranny ran a good race too but in a no way a threat to Hassan.
