Siege of Angkor (Khmer empire vs Kingdom of Champa)

Cham invasions of Angkor (1170, 1177-1181)
Under Suryavarman II (reigned 1113-1150) the Kambuja (Khmer) kingdom united internally and Angkor Wat, the largest Vaishnavites temple in the capital of Yaśōdharapura (Angkor) was built in a period of 37 years. Khmer forces though he did sack Champa capital, Vijaya in 1145 and depose Jaya Indravarman III. The Khmers occupied Vijaya until 1149, when they were driven out by Jaya Harivarman I. Suryavarman II sent a mission to the Chola dynasty of south India and presented a precious stone to the Chola Emperor Kulothunga Chola I in 1114.
After Suryavarman II died, Kambuja (Khmer) empire was weakened by succession crisis, while Champa was united by King Jaya Indravarman IV. Finally in 1177 CE the Kambuja capital Yaśōdharapura (Angkor) was raided and looted after victorious naval battle on the Tonlé Sap lake by a Cham fleet under Jaya Indravarman IV king of Champa. During the sack, usurper Tribhuvanadityavarman king of Kambuja (khmer) was killed. Nevertheless exiled khmer Jayavarman VII manage to save the Kambuja Empire from its demise and repel the cham forces.

Don't forget Indonesia and Malaysia. Indonesia has the empires of Srivijaya and Majapahit while Malaysia has the Tambralinga kingdom. The Srivijaya empire built Borobudur temple (largest Buddhist temple in the world), the Majapahit empire faced off against the Mongols, and the Tambralinga kingdom once conquered parts of India for a time.

Its not South Asia, but South East Asia. Different geographic regions, although they are interlinked historically, with South East Asians (Tibeto-Burman and Tai-speakers) moving into or native to Assam which is in Far eastern India and Bhutan, and South Asian Dharmic beliefs (Hinduism and Buddhism) being professed by many Southeast and East Asians (more in the past, Islam and Christianity has meant less Southeast Asians profess the belief than they did before the Abrahamic beliefs came here, but even in countries like the Philippines, they survive in folk beliefs and in manh loanwords on local languages). South Asia refers to the countries of India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Nepal and Bhutan (both transitory countries to East and South East Asia, like Tibet is on the East Asian side), and in some books, the southeastern third of Afghanistan (i.e. the Pashtun people, who are shared equally between Afghanistan and Pakistan).

Both worship Vishnu and built great (Horus in Egypt) monuments for Lord Vishnu (Nagkor Vat).

the Syailendra dynasty in the 8th century. this dynasty built the Borobudur Temple (Indonesia). The government system of the Ankor kingdom was adopted from the ancient Mataram kingdom which had existed on the island of Java (Indonesia). Jayavarman II had lived in Java during the reign of the Sailendra dynasty, or "Kings of the Mountains". At that time the kings of the Sailendra dynasty as rulers of Medang and Sriwijaya controlled Java, Sumatra and the Malayan peninsula as well as parts of Cambodia. Borobudur temple was built in 770 AD and completed in 825 AD, while the Angkor wat temple was built in 1113-1149M) by Suryavarman II. whereas in the 11th century the Malay Archipelago (Indonesia, Malaysia & the Philippines) had partly established Islamic empires, this was a period of transition and assimilation of Indonesian society (Nusantara) from cultureHinduism-Buddhism to Islam. We are all brothers. acheh people (etnhic in Indonesia) have language similarities with Champa Malay in Cambodia.

@@nguyenn99527 Did I forget or did you not read my comment? Islam in Indonesia coincided with the collapse of Hinduism and Buddhism. and the first Indonesian people (the Indonesian archipelago at that time) converted to Islam were my people when Sultan Alaiddin Syed Maulana Abdul Aziz Shah ruled the Peurlak kingdom, 860-864 AD, then the Peurlak kingdom merged withthe Samudra Pasai kingdom in 1292, then the Samudra Pasai kingdom merged into the Aceh Darussalam kingdom in 1496-1903 AD, and Muslim Indians also contributed to spreading Islam in the archipelago, not just Arabs. I know my own history better..because I and my ancestors for thousands of years have been Muslims who have lived from the time of the first kingdom, namely the Peurlak kingdom, the second Samudra Pasai and the third Aceh Darussalam and now after the Aceh kingdom collapsed and merged with Indonesia. Refusal to trade?? 😂 You must not know that the Khmer empire engineered the largest deep watered port in all of South East Asia just for trade. It was so massive that most of the trading volume disrupted Srivijaya kingdom and made it weak 😂. You need to study more about the Khmer empire's maritime trade specifically with Song China.

@sohkathatch4081 khmer welcomed Tai people to settle on khmer territory. Tais had been migrating to the historical khmer lands even before the mongol invasion. The regions they settled on were sparsely populated and terrain was rugged similar to their homeland in Yunnan China. It became somewhat autonomous but wasn't officially recognized by the khmer bureaucratic officials at angkor. Only when one faction of Tai(Siamese) decided to form a rebellious group with the help of khmer separatists movement located on the fringes of the empire, did this group muster enough resources and power to engage full on battles with the khmer army. The khmer officials at angkor would later use another Tai faction(Lao people) to fight off the Tai Siamese. The two Tai kingdoms Ayutthaya and Lan Xang formed as by products of khmer civilization but in two totally different ways.

If we use DNA analysis to check the human relatives, Kmer people share more similarity of their DNA to Jampas and some native people from Indonesia island such as Buonoew and Sumatra. Don't you think about how Jampa did people get there? Jampa civilization is as old as Funan. Surprisingly, both civilizations were good at brick-construction. The scientist do not conclude that ancient Funan and Jenla people had Kmer as their spoken language. Most of ancient texts that had left to the current time, they were scribed in Sanskrit (palawa letters). Recently, there is another DNA relative analyses have shown that Thai people are more related in DNA to Khom ( theoretically, they are ancestor of Kampugia people). All important historical records from ancient Khom had sieged to Ayodhaya, and they all got burn during the last siege by Burma Kongbong kingdom. Some of them got transferred to new Burmese capital, Amorapura. Unfortunately, during WWII allies dropped many bombs and burn the palaces and many national treasures and important documents.

@@sweatiepie Just don't stare at that wall. Beside, no one cares for the past? How the nation distribute wealth to general population? How we can increase the GDP ? Thai twitched history didn't make their country advance. Only education in technology and medicine that will take your nation advance. USA has only 275 years history, and it is the world power. Cambodia was established 1st century, but still stuck 100 years behind in medicine and technology when compared to USA. Yes, Thai had been crazied their national identity, it didn't help them to improve their life quality. Now, they are living with the present, make old cultures to compromised future. China had send their archeologists to study and investigate ancient Tang dynasty instruments which they were gifted to Japan, both countries have collaborated the study for their ancient Tang music. Why do not Thai and Cambodia work together ( we might throw Loas and Burma also), this will do the great cause--who know, we might make the Great Classical South East Asia Music. But I think the Wests would never want, We all work together and get stronger. Divide and conquer is always work for their world domination strategy. I could never hate Cambodia people, after all, we are all related whether you like it or not. Respect everyone.....

Very few foreigners know about the war-torn and war-filled history of South Asia, aka, Southeast Asia mostly because that region was so isolated and little known to the rest of mankind's major civilizations to the west and of North East Asia. But what this short video proves is that ambitious, powerful, and violent men exist all over the globe throughout time and place, not just in Europe. And men filled with ambition for power and desirous of more lands of expansion and conquest will bring war to everyone around them.
