    YES HURRY UP AND GET SIDMOUTH ON THE MAIN LINE - I'm getting old now!! I LOVE the West Country class. I did a watercolour painting of 'Crewkerne' passing Corfe Castle many years ago. They can NEVER replace those wonderful years when steam ruled.

    I was in Sidmouth, Devon, three days ago (Wednesday, 17/02/2021). A nice day out on the Stagecoach 9 bus, from Exeter. When the bus reaches Bowd, I always look out for traces of the old Sidmouth branch line. You can see the bridge abutments at Bowd / Stowford, and the track embankment, heading into Sidmouth. Then, the old Sidmouth railway station itself, at Woolbrook.

    Amazing, this group has 7 restored locomtives and still working on more. The US people can't get even one of their engines done in a complete restoration or rebuild as necessary -= UP being the exception. Well done, people. Nice that you have the facilities and location to work, and the people dedicated to a thorough and complete job of it. Get a fleet of these and compete with the other rail services.

    The reason we have so many is because Dai Woodham, who owned the scrapyard from which most of these engines were rescued, had a wagon cutting contract at the time. It so happened that cutting up wagons was easier, quicker and generated a more immediate cashflow ... so he concentrated on cutting them up first. That having been said, Dai would often store locomotives for years while preservation groups raised the cash to purchase them.

    I seem to recall Sidmouth being bought by Graeme Binns in the mid 70's it was originally to be rebuilt and work on the North York Moors Railway. So it's had a long hard life since being "preserved". I hope that it will not be pushed to the ba ck of the queue yet again and that we will soon see it back on the rails pulling trains again, which is where all the locos that escaped the cutters torch should be.

    +04clemea All our locos are restored to the same engineering standard as those working on main lines, however we do not fit the electronic gubbins required to run on main lines. We have no current intention to fit what's needed and my understanding is that Swanage Railway's services to Wareham will all be DMU's due to timing and run-round constraints.

    so if I'm guessing right Sidmouth will have Eddystone's boiler and Eddystone will have a new boiler made? But I'm a little confused, wouldn't you just Rebuild and then somewhat use Appledore's old boiler as they were sister engines.

  • @nhthompson

    @nhthompson

    7 жыл бұрын

    Sidmouth will not be using Eddystone's boiler; that was an initial idea, but was not adopted. Both Sidmouth and Eddystone will use their own boilers, both of which need significant repairs. Eddystone's boiler is in the works at Buckfastleigh. Work on Sidmouth's has not started yet. Appledore is being restored by a separate organisation. What is the reason for using Eddystone`s boiler instead of restoring Sidmouth own boiler?

  • @nhthompson

    @nhthompson

    8 жыл бұрын

    +John trainfan101 Eddystone came out of ticket in 2014 and its boiler is in reasonable condition, so the time and cost of repairs should be within the three year target we're aiming for to complete Sidmouth. If we used Sidmouth's boiler the project might take 5 years and cost a lot more, during which time Manston would also come out of service. So the plan is to start work on Sidmouth's boiler when resources permit, and use it on Eddystone.

  • @richardharrold9736
