Sid Caesar - "This is Your Story" with Carl Reiner and Howard Morris (Full Sketch)

Комедия

[From "Kovacs Corner" on KZread.com] - Before video tape, when a live prime time television series went on mid year hiatus, the networks would broadcast "summer replacements". During the year 1957, "The Ernie Kovacs Show" was the summer replacement program for "Caesar's Hour". Earlier known as "Your Show of Shows", it starred the legendary TV comedian Sid Caesar, with co-stars Carl Reiner and the late Howard Morris. With a writing staff that included among others Mel Brooks, Neil Simon, Danny Simon and Mel Tolkin, it was one of the premier comedy shows of it's time. This particular sketch satirizes one of the most popular programs of it's day "This is Your Life" which starred Ralph Edwards and it is, in my opinion, one of the funniest comedy sketches ever performed on television. Howard Morris' over-the-top performance as "Uncle Goopy" put an audience in stitches 50 years ago and he can do it again with equal ease today! After Kovacs' untimely death, Sid was called upon by director Stanley Kramer to replace Ernie in the role of "Melville Crump" in the1963 film "It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World".

This single sketch alone is responsible for so many of today's comedians, Conan O'Brian and Billy Crystal amongst others. Howard T. Morris was so brilliant at the art of improvising. He was classically trained but his true gift was making people forget there problems for a short while and making them just feel good from laughter. Howard T. Morris R.I.P. and thanks for all the laughs.

I was a young boy when my parents & grandparents would gather around the TV to watch “Your Show of Shows” on Sunday nights right after the Ed Sullivan Show. These were clean, pure comic genius’ led by Sid Caesar with Carl Reiner, Imogene Coca, Howie Morris, Louie Nye & Nanette Fabray making us laugh until we cried. No cursing, no self deprecating or calling people out. Sid hired the best comedy writers like Mel Brooks, Carl Reiner, Neil & Danny Simon, Mel Tolkien, Larry Gelbert & eventually Woody Allen. The cream of the crop in comedy. Two days ago we lost Carl who lived to be 98 years old. The end of a classic era in TV comedy. To this day, there’s no comedy show or movie that comes close to what they did to entertain us. RIP to all these comics that made us laugh until our bellies hurt.....you’re all truly missed.

This is probably the funniest ten minutes in television history, and it happened almost at the outset. This sketch served as the endpiece for the 1973 theatrical compilation "Ten from Your Show of Shows," which was first broadcast on TV several years later. It included other classic sketches such as "The Clock" and "The German General." In April 1967, the four joined together for what was essentially a final installment of Your Show of Shows. Since the title was owned by NBC and the special was on CBS, they had to call it the "The Sid Caesar, Imogene Coca, Carl Reiner, Howard Morris Special." It won two Emmys and was nominated for a third. Thanks, Sid. Thanks, Carl. Thanks, Imogene. Thanks, Howie.

One of the features of Sid Caesar's performances was the burning intensity of the man. Everything he did came from somewhere real, and sometimes a sense of desperation. When you can bring those qualities to a comedy sketch and make people laugh till they cry, you've got something precious. You could almost say, sacred.

RIP Sid Caesar. You were a funny, funny man sir! A true legend. Who could forget you in "Your Show of Shows" with Imogene Coca or in "It's A Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World" with Spencer Tracy, and of course Couch Calhoun in Grease. You will be missed!

I thought Conan O'Brien was exaggerating by saying this video was hilarious but I came to see it anyway. By the 2nd minute I was cracking up. This is really hilarious.

This was LIVE too! It amazes me they could pull this stuff off. I doubt anyone would have the grit and gravel to attempt it today.

TheUncaJoe I know. This was done LIVE! One shot! One of the single funniest things I have even seen from a television show. Sid Caesar was out of this world funny. Special kudos to Carl Reiner (the MC) and Howie Morris (Uncle Goofy) who were drop dead hilarious as well. And let's not forget the fabulous writers. "Your Show of Shows" (Saturday Nights, NBC 1950-1954) with Sid Caesar, Imogene Coca, Carl Reiner and Howard Morris. What a show!

What made it so funny is that normally the person that was the subject of the original "This is your life" show was always surprised but calmly came up onto the stage and excepted everyone from his past in a dignified manor.

Talking to a really funny younger actor who had never heard of Sid Caesar's "Your Show of Show". Live TV in the 50's. Brilliant. Maybe TV Land could play some re-runs. On the shoulders of giants.

Wonderful combination of brilliant minds. A wonderful time in television. And I only recently learned that The Alan Brady Show, the one Rob Petrie wrote for on The Dick Van Dyke Show, was in fact based on Reiner's experiences on Sid Caesar's show. Same with Mel Brooks and My Favorite Year.
