SICILY by ultralight cyclotouring

While Sicily is not very popular with cyclotourists, we found pleasant quiet roads, impressive landscapes and a rich history. We invite you to immerse yourself in our trip in April 2024.

For this trip we followed the SIBIT route, which is over 560 km in a well-distributed succession of hills adding up to 4500 meters of positive elevation gain. Our main source of information for this trip was the ‘Italy Cycling Guide’, to which we add the following few comments based on our experience:
1. In terms of signage, we haven’t seen a single SIBIT sign before Scoglitti but there were plenty afterwards. That’s why bringing a GPX is valuable.
When leaving Troscina towards Selinunte, the GPX goes into a parc. However, the parc entrance was closed without any sign about potential openings. So we took SP81 as a detour and back on SS115.
2. After leaving San Leone, the GPX propose a quiet road (SP71) south of the SS115. Unfortunately, road SP71 was completely closed even to cyclists because of reparation, so we took SS115 and crossed two painful tunnels. Instead, we suggest taking SP64, north of SS115.
3. Just after Scoglitti, the GPX propose the SP102. Unfortunately, we could not find a way to cross the river (see the video), so we used a small easy detour on SP105.
4. We didn’t climbed to Ragusa as suggested by the Italy Cycling Guide. We stayed on the coast using the SIBIT which was really nice and we stopped 2 nights in the nice town of Marina di Ragusa. We were happy to find a bus to Ragusa and Modica, which allowed us visiting a world heritage city without the burden of climbing on a busy road.
Our favorite part was the 3 last days before Siracusa. Roads were quiet, cleaner and towns were in a better condition than on the west part of the island. Ciao !

We toured Sicily by bike in 2013 for about 3 weeks from late April to mid May. It was a marvellous place to travel. Lots of good quiet roads, mostly very respectful drivers and very affordable. We camped a bit, but eventually found the cheap 2 or 3-star hotels right in the town centro to be better value. We followed a route somewhat similar to your SIBIT route, but beforehand spent 4 nights in the Aeolian Islands, rode from Milazzo via Novara di Sicilia to Giardini Naxos, visited Ragusa, and rode from Sciacca to Calefitimi and Palermo at the end. All part of our longer 3 month tour - kzread.info/head/PLEX2xbENINSsKkxLgg9HXyDAFFWIcjlGy&si=0AiPkHE_FnzKp6o2

Like your videos! I'm still at the bike bag stage. Live in the mountains, train by loading bike and bags on my back, and walk around my yard.

Of course ! As I explained in the textual description of the video, our route was a bit different from the one proposed by Italy cycling guide. Here are the 2 sets of GPX... 1. Our route: drive.google.com/drive/folders/10i44G9HLpAfkbE_WNwjoxVB2UJoRDVp-?usp=drive_link 2. The route of Italy Cycling Guide: dgenk2ebcidb9.cloudfront.net/Southern-Sicilian-coast-gps-files.zip Questions are welcome. Enjoy !
