The freshness and tang in the passage for the two flutes beginning at .25 is absolutely superb. I've never heard it played with such vigour. The entire performance is wonderful; my new favourite.
I grew up on Sibelius.I looked at life with his ouvertures in my head. He allowed me time to Learn another world existence parallel to what I experienced. I love him.
This is my kind of concert, not the umpteenth performance of standard repertoire but a great mix including this remarkable work by one of the greatest of all composers and another favourite of mine, Nielsen’s stunning 4th symphony- bravo Antonio Pappano and the wonderful L.S.O. - absolutely magnificent. Special mention for the superb flautist!
Millón de gracias. Y digo que la profundidad del océano, es la misma profundidad espiritual de Sibelius.
Wonderful! Sibelius at his powerful best, superbly played.
Great performance of this masterpiece. Thank you!
Bravo!!! Well done. Truly amazing.
Bravo! The clarity of texture serves Sibelius well. ♥️
Wow, this was good! I would never had considered Sir A P as a Sibelian and I would have been entirely wrong. This interpretation evinces a deep understanding of this sublime score. Bravo Maestro!

I understand that Antonio Pappano will succeed Simon Rattle as next chief conductor of the L.S.O, Couldn´t think of a better appointment, an outstanding conductor who never disappoints.
Beautiful!
Thanks for the upload. Wonderful Sibelius, wonderful Pappano, the man I wish had been appointed Principal conductor as I consider him one of the finest conductors in the World today. Nevertheless I hope he continues to make many guest appearances with the L.S.O.
👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
The Oceanides, Opus 73, is a symphonic poem for orchestra in one alone movement whose the sensibility, oriented acutely to nature, certainly informs The Oceanides. The work is the rare Sibelius' tone poem that does not take its subject from the « Kalevala » the repository of Finnish mythology to which the composer often turned for inspiration. In Greek mythology, The Oceanides were the manifold daughters of Oceanus, the water that circled the earth. The Naiads were associated with water in all of its forms rain, rivers, streams, lakes, and the like and they were one variety of the nymphs that inhabited the wild places of the ancient Greek world. That inspired Sibelius to compose one of the most organic and atmospheric orchestral works in his repertoire. The work's organicism is subtle, not easily perceived on first listening. After the opening muted strings over rumbling timpani, the composer introduces two fragmentary themes, the first in the flutes, the second shared by oboes and clarinets. From this material, Sibelius derives much of what follows. The music itself proves to be an elaborate aquatic metaphor, revised version of the score reveals the impression the sea had made on the composer during his Atlantic crossing. Serene and subdued for much of its course, The Oceanides surges to a climax derived from the opening flute passage just before its closing moments, when the first theme returns, transformed, in the clarinets, bringing back the calm waters of the opening. The detractors will probably deplore the fact that the composer is still a respecter of form, still a devotee of beauty, still a believer in the potency of melody. Sibelius is a fine musical constructionist, an eloquent harmonist and a fine colorist despite his fondness for dark tints. Jean Sibelius is already a master without a school! *Lucien*

Is there anything this orchestra can’t play??!!
Nu kape sis ir jaklausas
Absolutely negative experience listening to this piece in this performance - commercials came in 3 (three) times in a middle of the most delicate parts. The orchestra did a descent job. This channel is too greedy for money = terrible experience watching such videos with the ads in the middle.
