Sialadenitis - Causes, Clinical features, Treatment (Chronic and Acute Bacterial Sialadenitis)
Sialadenitis refers to the inflammation of salivary glands. It may either have an infectious or non infectious cause. The non infectious causes of sialadenitis includes sjogren syndrome, sarcoidosis, radiation therapy and various allergens.
The infectious causes may be either a viral infection seen in mumps or it may result from a bacterial infection with the most common causative agent being staph aureus and strep pyogenes. bacterial sialadenitis is always an ascending infection. By ascending infection it means that the bacteria from the oral cavity moves from the ductal orifice towards the ducts and salivary parenchyma. This retrograde bacterial flow may result from the ductal obstruction or decreased salivary flow. The ductal obstruction can be caused by sialoliths, congenital strictures or compression by an adjacent tumor. Decreased salivary flow can result from dehydration, debilitation or certain medications that inhibit salivary secretions.
Since there are so many causes of sialadenitis, the focus of this video is sialadenitis resulting from bacterial infections

Thank you for this thorough but easy to understand explanation. I took my fiancee to the ER at 4 a.m. after he woke up in horrible pain and one side of his face swollen. He got antibiotics and is drinking lots of water and sucking on lemons. Hoping they help, as he's in a lot of pain.
Really helpful very easy to remember

Usg ct shows calcification neoplastic changes anisocytosis metaplastic. On palpation hard tumor almost fixed to skin. High chances of malignacy. Also lymph nodes enlarged. Continue medications plan for surgery ( Doctor says for surgery but age is too much, so I'm in very fearful condition. Can you suggest me that hard lump in rt side of sub mandibular gland. Please give advice. Thank you
I am a Sjögren’s patient and currently have chronic submandibular infection. Going to the Oral surgeon today, but they are not aware that I have Sjögren’s or that I have sialadenitis. I am worried that my small town, rural oral surgeon is not going to be aware of these unique illnesses, that I have.
What is the name of that surgery? Will there any complications after surgery?
Can chronic sialadenitis compress the facial nerve and affect that
wow
🙏
Very helpful and simple thank you very much for the effort Do you have a site where you put the diagram that you draw so we can print it from? It'll be great if you have 🌹

Since October 2019 I just felt little bit swelling of my right submandibular gland .It was puffy kinda swelling completely nonpainfull . I went to the doctor and he said it might be lymphadenopathy since Right submandibular gland measured 1.7×1.0 on USG. I did FNAC twice to re confirm any malignancy but report was negative for Granuloma/malignancy. For 21 days doc prescribed me antibiotics but swelling was still there. After the antibiotics my swelling became like a movable rock. Then he told it might be chronic sialdenitis and surgery should be done. I refused for it and now Nov 2020 I still have that swelling . Nowadays I experience mild pain occasionally. Can you suggest me anything about this??

I had kinda of same thing. Mine doesn't do anything. I feel Very little heaviness sometimes. My doctor told me it's chronic. He didn't prescribe me any antibiotic. It's been 8 months. Mine is inside the cheek around parotid gland. Did you seen any color changes over the month?

With my Sjögren’s, it made mine chronic and infected, swollen, red hot, painful in and outside of mouth.
God… The pain… imagine a stove burn feeling deep in your neck each time you swallow or move your neck in an odd position. I wouldn’t wish this on anyone. 1 year of this and no help from doctors whatsoever. What a life huh? I’m alive still at least :/
