I agree they are too short and should been measured down to the bottom of the window box.

You should have put a gap between boards to accommodate for expansion...looks great 👍

Maybe wider and taller to look like real shutters that would cover the window.

Personally, I think they are cute. Some people just aren't getting it, that if you had made the shutters longer, to reaching the bottom of the window box, that wouldn't be realistic at all! You chose correctly!

I disagree with everyone saying they look too short, it’s a small window which = small shutters. These were so cute and they are really giving that little window a moment. We are hoping to put shutters on our new house and you make it look so easy! Thanks for the great vid:)

From France, a country with a tradition of shutters, there is a geometry attached to them, and it’s very challenging to adapt them to other types of architecture. That said I have seen in New England some beautifully proportioned shutters that were never used as such, of course. It’s all in the proportions.

I've been toying with the idea of adding shutters to my house for a year. I came here for infos and it turns out that I would fall in the "Don't" category. So you helped me by not going foward with the project and I'll find something that will fit my house better!

I don't understand how anyone can own a home in the gulf coast of the US and NOT have functional window shutters. Last time a hurricane blew through where I live (Houston) it was amazing to see all the houses with boarded up windows that had mere decorative shutters showing.

Sometimes the do’s turn into a don’t. Your knowledge is correct but the look is off. I would choose one or the other, flower box or shutter for this window.

For those who think the shutters should be as long as the flower box.... how would you close the shutters with the box in the way? The premise is, shutters should be able to close and cover the window... I like the authentic look. Guess beauty is in the eye of the beholder. And since we’re all just beholders, ours are all just opinions. And you know what they say about opinions😉

Your finished shutters look great. I've never cared for shutters unless they are actually big enough to cover the window if they were to be closed. To me the proportions are all off unless you could at least in theory shut them. I've never put them on my own house for that reason as my windows are too large, but the window you used was a good size. I like that you shuttered only one window - it's a nicer accent by not having then on every window. And your pictures of the fails - what can I say - I had some great laughs!

I needed a good chuckle, too many unfortunate shudders. I live in Florida and I love to drive to St. Augustine and take photos of all the beautiful old details of hurricane shudders and other preserved doors and windows.

Shutters add so so much curb appeal - I think they look warm and inviting. I recently made really similar shutters for our daughters little house and they are so cute. I used screws going into the cross piece from behind and than I countersunk the screws attaching them to the house - using exterior grade screws so we don't have problems with rusting later on. Hopefully they will last a long time!
