I really enjoyed your video explaining about the two Shure microphones. One of the best videos I’ve seen! You are very thorough and made it easy for me to understand. I just started singing with the worship team at church. I have an old Peavy mic that I bought in 1974 and I really want to up grade. This mic would last me for the rest of my life!

I already own the KSM 8 and use it pretty regularly in my home studio for vocal duties, it does a great job at negating my less than perfect recording environment and reducing plosives. I recently bought a higher end condenser microphone and the first couple recordings were depressing because it was picking up so much room reflections. I handled it with some acoustic treatment but mic placement was still critical. The KSM 8 has a really generous sweet spot and I can just set up and record without much fuss. Like any dynamic mic you want to have a pre with plenty of gain to drive it. Btw, I thought both mics sounded great on your voice with the KSM 8 sounding more flattering, it doesn't have boxiness of the 58, very smooth sounding microphone to be sure, good luck to whoever wins it!

Hi, since lockdown(s) I started songwriting using an acoustic guitar. I’m working on an old MacBook (patched up to High Sierra) and gradually transferring my stuff to Logic, augmenting instruments as I go. I’m finding it very rewarding and fulfilling. A real offset to the current situation. I use an old Apogee One which is fine, however it’s not great for vocals :-) I’ve borrowed an Audio Technica shotgun mic from a friend which has improved things.. but is obviously tricky to use. So there’s my ongoing story. I’d really like this mic and hope the gods favour me :-) (I’m in the UK btw). p.s. Thanks for all your Logic’ tips MusicTechHelpGuy, they’ve come in really handy. Have a good Christmas everyone.

You know, the question isn't whether or not its better than an SM58 (interesting that there was no Beta 58a comparison), but rather is this $500 worth of microphone? It LOOKS super cool but I'm not sure I'm hearing the price tag here. Hats off to the vocalist. Excellent demonstration.

The KSM8 is great for cab micing and works extremely well for bass cabs we use them that way live. If you look at old live music from the late 60s and early 70s you see singers with 2 microphones the KSM8 was invented to solve this issue. But my live audio company that just does local festivals and small venue shows switched to the Blue Encore 200 Active dynamic mics and the Encore 300 handheld condensers. We mostly use the 200's which sound like a shure sm7 without the loss in volume. The Encore 300s get used for mostly quiet singers. But we still employ the KSM8 for those rare instances where a singer is just being a butthead and refuses to stay far enough away from the floor monitor to stop it from feeding back constantly. Like propping their foot up on the monitor and leaning downward toward it bent over then yelling at the monitor person to stop the feedback. Yea kids even professional major label acts still do this crap. So we give them the KSM8 which is good two ways. It's cabled so they are limited to the distance they can run with it (also give them a short cable if they are causing feedback when you change out their mic) and the KSM8 is remarkable at NOT causing feedback. Its dual capsule design is just amazing at staying out of the feedback ring of a floor monitor. Sure if you point it directly at the monitor feedback will occur but in general usage it's the best I've seen in 27 years of doing live music. Also it is the only reliable microphone you can give to a drummer who is also a vocalist that will keep cymbal wash and drum slap back out of the mix. Great video MTHG!

Nice song as always, and I got into the performance, which is what is always the REAL goal, over technicality. I don't know why you rolled-off the bottom, when the whole point was to show how each mic handles prox effect. I also never understood why proximity effect is considered so bad. I always used it as a sort of fun effect--sort of fatten up my voice, and a way to play with the PA system. Reducing plosives for untrained people making speeches and not to have to use a foamy would be a reason to buy this mic, though.

Greetings from Mexico, a few days ago my SM58 arrived, a big odyssey to ensure that it was original cause I found an excellent hotsale price, and it is! My voice is baritone and I have to be careful with the bass when singing and the SM58 solved that for me, I no longer force or modulate my voice, that is, it is more natural and relaxed. But now I see your video and your information is great! I loved the KSM8, my credit card is in danger lol, please honestly with the information I give you from my voice, will the KSM8 help me more? Best wishes and vibes to you. BR

Definitely a decent mic, but i think it would be very close to an beta 58a, which is only $150. One thing noted was you were signing further away than most vocalists in real life would with an sm58. i think the sm58 would perform slightly better a bit closer to the mic and then rolling off the lows, where as the ksm8 seems to do alright this far away...and also seems it would do better than the beta58, but close.

I feel this is not a true demo and comparison because, in real life, singers will be in movement, which means their mic will also be in movement. At times, closer to the mouth, at times, further out, at times, not straight at the mouth. I also feel the SM58 kept your vocal tone color much more interesting, warmer and brighter. It worked better for your voice to make it sound more impressive and unique in tone. Many people who analyze mics they analyze the technical part of it but what really matters for the audience is how soothing and unique your tone color will sound.

Germany - this video goes to show, that technical designs can only help so much with plosives. In the end, a decent microphone technique is your best bet on taming plosives. The difference is there. But to me as a mere hobbyist, it’s not like a huge deal. It’s an upgrade for sure, but only if the environment merits it.
