In this video James takes a look at the Shure BETA 91A microphone. He shows you some of its key features and let you judge for yourself how it sounds by using it to record two different kick drums.

1st rule of getting an 'open and natural' sounding drum...don't remove the resonant head. 2ndly and most importantly...don't use a stargate as a resonant head. You should be struck off the world drummers list for that alone! ;)

Owesome mic. What i like about it is the fact that because its so "inside" the drum itself it just cuts most of the irrelevant "enviromental" sounds away, focusing on what it suppsed to focus on: the kick, givind nice, focus, clear and crispy sound of the drum.
@Mudge074 жыл бұрын
As to positioning, apart from floating it on a cage/platform inside the drum, any placement should account for the 60 degree cone from ground level upwards to see the its sonic source. Some suggest a more central, internal kick drum position away from the batter head or even about 60cm in front of the resonant head.

Good review James, thanks! Well presented with no 'umms' & 'errs' and no camera wobble either. I wish some of the product reviewers on here, whether or not they're part timers or pros, would take the same trouble. I will be looking to add a BETA 91A to my mic collection soon!

Are you asking this of your system or do you think this is the case on the video? In Either case the screen redraw has no effect on the timing of the audio on input or output.

I have 3 amps 2 guitar and 1 bass. I set up loops in my room through the 3 amps. Would this mic record the room sound accurate?

Hey nice review, do you have any sound demos whilst playing the rest of the kit? Is there much bleed? Thanks :)
@AruhPlays

Hi ! The bleed will be decided by the mic placement. If you set it further back the beater head, you'll get less snare bleed. Snare is the most that the Beta91 will get if you place it close to the beater head. (You can check my Beta91 Mic test, it shows the mic placement and full kit audio) Cheers !

those bass drums sound like the wife one is angrily knocking on the door, and with the eq sounds like the mother in law is angrily knocking on the door.

Pull your mic back away from the beater head, you may find you get a better sound out of the mic. a recording engineer (cant remember the guys name) said that he found if you went too close you would see the meter moving but not get much sound until you moved it back, feel the air inside when the kick is being played and move hand back till you feel the pressure wave. i guess its something to do with either your getting tones of really low frequency thats not usauble or the wave needs to start developing>? IDK but ive tried it and it does work for me anyway

It records instantly. It just generates wave form with delay since it is completly irrelevant during the process, thus the most of resources are used for what is the most important at the moment: recording audio input.

to be fair I think he means: reproducing the sound you hear acoustically when in the room. So it might not be a "good" sound but true to the source. And yes i agree the 22 sounds like an acquired taste ;-)

My thoughts exactly. The EQ on the Yamaha removes too much. The Tama though sounds much better with EQ - it cuts out exactly what should be cut out to get a nice crisp, clean sound. Obviously different scenarios and different drum sets and different environments will dictate when to turn on EQ and when to leave it off.

First off I'm stating my opinion and don't appreciate your back talk. EVERY video on KZread is free you goof! That literally doesn't matter and doesn't support your argument; therefore, it's irreverent. Also, my comment wasn't supposed to be appreciative - I would have said, "Thank you for this video" if it was supposed to be. Now please keep any remarks you may have to yourself as I do not care. Good day :)
