Shur Line Paint Edger Pro Review | Does It Work?

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Very useful tool when used correctly. Always check to make sure the pad has been fully covered by the paint you are applying. Always check for paint on the guard or wheels on the paint edger to ensure a better quality paint cut.

First time viewer. I am a professional renovator and I use these every time I paint. I think you would like it a lot more if you had a little better technique/experience with it. First of all you can't load it so that it is dripping and you don't start right against your corner. I always start sliding it on the wall about three inches down to take off any heavy load then move up to the corner and it makes a perfect clean cut. I can cut with these far better than I can cut with a brush and I am pretty good with a brush too. Good video, thanks for showing us what you think.

Interesting post. For the first time using this trimmer he did a good job. Just a couple thing. I have used this trimmer for a couple years now and it is one of the best one on the market. To the ppl dogging on him here is my opinion. Zinsser is one of the better primers out there today and oh by the way it can be tinted or color it any color you want now so is that what he is using? Lift the wheels defore u put paint on it, it really does help. After u put paint on the trimmer, make a swip or two on the wall to get the heavy paint off the pad before u go for the trim line this makes a much cleaner line. Have a 2 or 3 inch roller with you and as soon as u r done trimming a area go over it with a roller as close as u can to ceiling to get rid of all the brush marks. Just a coupe little tricks that help out a lot. To to guy that said he could trim better with a brush and a blindfold, just kind of curious of how your first trim line worked when you started painting. Remember the guy said he’s never use this tool before.

Game changing tool for me. I used to cut with an angled brush and did a good job but this dramatically reduced my painting time. As with everything else you get better the more you use it, however rest assured that the learning curve is easy. I used this in my house for the first time and I wasn't expecting professional results especially never having tried this before so I started in the bedroom closet. I made negligible mistakes while learning how to properly load the right amount paint on the pad and avoid getting it on the wheels. I found that when starting the pass, keep an upward and inward pressure at a minimum then gradually increase inward pressure to as to squeeze the paint out the pad until it meets the corner perfectly. By the time I did one coat on the closet edges and on one bedroom wall I was making nearly perfect edges. I also tried loading the paint with a brush and on the tray; both achieved the same results so go with whats more comfortable to you. If you are considering it, I highly recommend getting it as we all have better things to do in life then to spend more time painting a wall than needed. Have fun!

I've used a similar tool years ago and would never go back to a brush. It worked perfectly and quickly. You have to get used using it and loading it correctly with the paint. No need to have a brush you can feather out the paint with this tool also. You'd get the feel of using correctly the more you use it. The one I had had bigger wheels and that works much better then one with small wheels like this

Thanks for posting. I have to say, the price point being a reason to get this tool, at least in my opinion, does not help with the fact that it does a ‘pretty decent job’. I have two rooms in progress at the moment both with high contrasting paint vs the white ceiling and bought one of these (used it years ago) with the intent of using it. I completed the first room cutting in the old fashion way & am very pleased with the results. Like every other topic in the world there are countless videos from pros on how to cut in with a brush that are worth the time combing through for best of practices. After watching this video, I’m reminded of the difficulties of over/under applying pressure, built up material leaking onto the line and getting on the ceiling and gummed up wheels making marks. I think on room two I’ll only use this on frame tops and edges not visible in the room to save time and corners where the ceiling and two walls come together. Again just my observation but IF you have a steady hand, I believe cutting in with a brush does a better job. As long as you do the entire ceiling to wall area BEFORE getting into corners and baseboards and take your time. If you’re using this tool the only thing I’ll add to the review is I think it would work better if you did a primary pass below the edge to lubricate the wall, just like you should using the old fashion brush cut-in, that way there’s less friction when you go for the edge and you’re not accidentally rocking and changing pressure just to keep the pad moving. Best of luck to all on your projects! And they say in fishing & applies here… tight lines everyone!!

I think the trick is to start in the center of the area you're cutting and move it back and forth. That way you don't have unpainted areas nearer to the corners.

Load the Shur-Line Paint edger with a brush. Easiest way to add paint without getting paint on the wheels. You can also see better where the new paint is going. I recommend an extension pole too.

Love this tool. You gotta flip the wheels back when you load the paint to keep from fouling them. With the wheels flipped back you can clean em or clean the top of the pad if you fouled it. To apply I start 8 inches from the ceiling and travel north into the ceiling and make a sharp left into the corner of the wall/ceiling. So long as you don't foul those wheels, you can then jam it up into the corner for a second pass. Start just to the right of your initial pass.

If you load the pad with a brush it keeps the wheels clean. You also don't want to over load it or it will leave a line of thick paint at the bottom. I can cut in with a brush but this is faster once you know how to use it.

So you're doing it wrong. Shur-Line advises you to only lock the sides onto the pad and leave the top 'locks' open while you dip. After dipping and scraping some paint off on the sides of the pan, you lock down the top clips where the rollers are effectively keeping paint off the rollers which is the only problem I had with this device until I watched the Shur-Line video.

Good job but a better one at finish coat will make all better NOT BAD is good I use one to cut in close and then rune brush as usual bleeding in straight line and flair out paint downward to lesser the coat dept the device left. all said you have straight line done and when you rollout wall your bleed to ceiling is more even in paint amount around top of room .and roller Curtin close as possible levels ya with even layer when ya do wall. Kinda helps with not having to use over amount of paint on wall because of cut in being massive layer .Perfect job.

I thought the Edger did a terrible job in your demo. That’s also the experience I had when using it. My main beef is that it just doesn’t get close enough to the edge, so you have a strip of old paint between the ceiling and the wall (or the trim and the wall). If it works for you, great! I’ll stick with my angled brush-it works best for me.

Honestly taping gives you the best results especially when you add i small bead of caulk and wipe smooth. You can just brush away with heavy coats and back roll and peel the tape to reveal that unbeatable straight line. The trick is to learn to apply the tape quickly. Now I can tape and caulk an average 15x15 rooms in 10mins and apply one heavy coat with back roll and pull the tape off a couple minutes later so the caulk won't fully dry and come off uneven.

Should've primed the walls ceiling, then sanded everything again before painting. Does a whole lot better. Maybe it wasn't in the budget. It's more difficult to cut in on unprimed/unpainted surfaces, especially on dusty joint compound. Next time at least run your ceiling paint, the width of your brush, down on the walls/corners where the ceiling meets the walls.

Put some paint in a cheap squeeze bottle to fill the pad. You don't even need a paint tray and don't have to climb up and down the ladder....you're welcome.

Less paint is better. Load it with a brush. Only use a Shur- line. Knock- offs are rubbish. 15 min practice and you're a pro. Cut on a room in 30% of time to do it with a brush.
