Shur Line Paint Edger Pro Review | Does It Work?
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
Very useful tool when used correctly. Always check to make sure the pad has been fully covered by the paint you are applying. Always check for paint on the guard or wheels on the paint edger to ensure a better quality paint cut.

First time viewer. I am a professional renovator and I use these every time I paint. I think you would like it a lot more if you had a little better technique/experience with it. First of all you can't load it so that it is dripping and you don't start right against your corner. I always start sliding it on the wall about three inches down to take off any heavy load then move up to the corner and it makes a perfect clean cut. I can cut with these far better than I can cut with a brush and I am pretty good with a brush too. Good video, thanks for showing us what you think.
Interesting post. For the first time using this trimmer he did a good job. Just a couple thing. I have used this trimmer for a couple years now and it is one of the best one on the market. To the ppl dogging on him here is my opinion. Zinsser is one of the better primers out there today and oh by the way it can be tinted or color it any color you want now so is that what he is using? Lift the wheels defore u put paint on it, it really does help. After u put paint on the trimmer, make a swip or two on the wall to get the heavy paint off the pad before u go for the trim line this makes a much cleaner line. Have a 2 or 3 inch roller with you and as soon as u r done trimming a area go over it with a roller as close as u can to ceiling to get rid of all the brush marks. Just a coupe little tricks that help out a lot. To to guy that said he could trim better with a brush and a blindfold, just kind of curious of how your first trim line worked when you started painting. Remember the guy said he’s never use this tool before.
As a true beginner DIY'er, the Shur Line edger products are game changers for me. Takes a little bit to get the hang of it, but saves tons of time.
Game changing tool for me. I used to cut with an angled brush and did a good job but this dramatically reduced my painting time. As with everything else you get better the more you use it, however rest assured that the learning curve is easy. I used this in my house for the first time and I wasn't expecting professional results especially never having tried this before so I started in the bedroom closet. I made negligible mistakes while learning how to properly load the right amount paint on the pad and avoid getting it on the wheels. I found that when starting the pass, keep an upward and inward pressure at a minimum then gradually increase inward pressure to as to squeeze the paint out the pad until it meets the corner perfectly. By the time I did one coat on the closet edges and on one bedroom wall I was making nearly perfect edges. I also tried loading the paint with a brush and on the tray; both achieved the same results so go with whats more comfortable to you. If you are considering it, I highly recommend getting it as we all have better things to do in life then to spend more time painting a wall than needed. Have fun!
I really appreciate the instructional video. It's my first time painting alone and your video really helped
I've used a similar tool years ago and would never go back to a brush. It worked perfectly and quickly. You have to get used using it and loading it correctly with the paint. No need to have a brush you can feather out the paint with this tool also. You'd get the feel of using correctly the more you use it. The one I had had bigger wheels and that works much better then one with small wheels like this
I love it I feel more confident now when I stand back and look at the work that I've done
Thanks for this demo. Just saw one and had no clue either what it was. So simple yet effective 😀👍🏻
Thanks for posting. I have to say, the price point being a reason to get this tool, at least in my opinion, does not help with the fact that it does a ‘pretty decent job’. I have two rooms in progress at the moment both with high contrasting paint vs the white ceiling and bought one of these (used it years ago) with the intent of using it. I completed the first room cutting in the old fashion way & am very pleased with the results. Like every other topic in the world there are countless videos from pros on how to cut in with a brush that are worth the time combing through for best of practices. After watching this video, I’m reminded of the difficulties of over/under applying pressure, built up material leaking onto the line and getting on the ceiling and gummed up wheels making marks. I think on room two I’ll only use this on frame tops and edges not visible in the room to save time and corners where the ceiling and two walls come together. Again just my observation but IF you have a steady hand, I believe cutting in with a brush does a better job. As long as you do the entire ceiling to wall area BEFORE getting into corners and baseboards and take your time. If you’re using this tool the only thing I’ll add to the review is I think it would work better if you did a primary pass below the edge to lubricate the wall, just like you should using the old fashion brush cut-in, that way there’s less friction when you go for the edge and you’re not accidentally rocking and changing pressure just to keep the pad moving. Best of luck to all on your projects! And they say in fishing & applies here… tight lines everyone!!
I think the trick is to start in the center of the area you're cutting and move it back and forth. That way you don't have unpainted areas nearer to the corners.
per user manual - you are supposed to raise up the wheels using the black lever, to prevent paint from sticking to them

I thought the wheels are supposed to touch the wall as you go. He got paint on them while painting not loading.
It does work! There is a technique though that you have to know when loading with paint and gliding in and out when painting.
It definitely worked but didn't look easy. But nothing ever is. Thanks for the demo.
Best to put the paint on the pad by using a brush and not cover the edges of the pad and then to use light pressure when applying, then it works much better.
Load the Shur-Line Paint edger with a brush. Easiest way to add paint without getting paint on the wheels. You can also see better where the new paint is going. I recommend an extension pole too.
Thanks a lot for sharing I will try and tell the workers
Any tips on how to stop the guide wheels taking the finish off the ‘other’ surface - in this video the ceiling...? When using a ‘little’ bit of force, managed to give myself another edging job! 😀
Love this tool. You gotta flip the wheels back when you load the paint to keep from fouling them. With the wheels flipped back you can clean em or clean the top of the pad if you fouled it. To apply I start 8 inches from the ceiling and travel north into the ceiling and make a sharp left into the corner of the wall/ceiling. So long as you don't foul those wheels, you can then jam it up into the corner for a second pass. Start just to the right of your initial pass.
If you load the pad with a brush it keeps the wheels clean. You also don't want to over load it or it will leave a line of thick paint at the bottom. I can cut in with a brush but this is faster once you know how to use it.
Used these before & hated them. Just bought a Accubrush, thing is amazing. I would highly recommend it for $30. Saved me time taping or slowly cutting in. Im not a pro painter so anything that makes life easier is well worth the money

Totally agree! Didn’t like it whatsoever
Was anybody else thinking? “go! Move that damn thing!” Lol. Thanks for the video
Totally awesome. Thanks
Does it work against moldings like the ones thay frame doors or the base boards
So you apply paint to bare drywall and spackle
How does this tool work when paint against cornicing? How would the wheels work when the cornicing only has less than 1cm of a lip before the curve.
I use these all the time...1 imp tip is they work good if the egdes r caulked properly
What are the odds I'm about to buy this product and you have the same color I'm painting my room?
One thing I like about shurline's compared to brushes it holds a lot of paint
You can press down harder than that. and you can movie it way faster then how slow he’s moving it. You also don’t have to go in one direction.
So, in your opinion, it it a okay product to speed up the cut in job???
Good video, thanks!
Normally I just cut in with a high quality angle nubby Purdy brush and keep it clean every hour or so. I can get really clean straight lines doing so but I'm dealing with a 20ft stairway and no possible way of getting a regular ladder up that high. ; ;
Omg no we have one of these and I never know it was used for edging
I love this edger cuts my time in half
Good job bro
You have to wipe off excess off on tray before you apply to wall,, give cleaner line.. Been using them for years..
I bought one of those edging tools and it works ok, however I also have a 4 inch roller I started trimming with and with some practice found it was faster than the edger, not to say the edger wasnt useful
To avoid paint getting on the wheel and guard pull up to load between the 2 wheel
So you're doing it wrong. Shur-Line advises you to only lock the sides onto the pad and leave the top 'locks' open while you dip. After dipping and scraping some paint off on the sides of the pan, you lock down the top clips where the rollers are effectively keeping paint off the rollers which is the only problem I had with this device until I watched the Shur-Line video.
Looking good. I believe your ment to brush the paint onto the pad so it doesn’t go on the guard

You're not meant to but it's the best strategy.
I seen someone using a brush to apply the paint onto this product and looked like it worked very well dipping the paint causes inconsistent amounts of paint you apply on the pad and also getting paint on the edge rollers

Very true I use a paint brush to control the amount of paint to the edger and not getting paint on the guide wheels and I get perfect straight edge every time
They work fine if you use a brush to put the paint on and keep paint off the rollers.. don’t overload with paint
start away about 1inch from the edge then push to the edge so you don't to worry about a lot of paint on it and get grab the excess on the wall to keep going just like rolling
I tried it I think it sucks it's a good idea but something needs to be done I think the wheels need to be farther away from the paint I don't know not sure but mine kept jamming up with paint and you always had to clean it just as much time as taping or free-handing
Eek! No primer on the drywall first?? EEK! I've used this edger and for me, it works best to go back and forth a bit. It's the very edge of the bristles that are doing the work in the corner. Don't overload with paint.
this things rlly easy to use i painted my entire room with the help of the tool for cutting and i’m 15 so

You must show me the way
You supposed to flip the rollers up before loading the paint so the don’t get paint on them and other surface.
Works better if you apply primer on that dry dusty surface, for better results use a flat liner for a better paint distribution along the pad. For more tips follow my channel. Thanks for watching this video👏👏
Good job but a better one at finish coat will make all better NOT BAD is good I use one to cut in close and then rune brush as usual bleeding in straight line and flair out paint downward to lesser the coat dept the device left. all said you have straight line done and when you rollout wall your bleed to ceiling is more even in paint amount around top of room .and roller Curtin close as possible levels ya with even layer when ya do wall. Kinda helps with not having to use over amount of paint on wall because of cut in being massive layer .Perfect job.
What happened to the step where you prime the walls to seal the drywall...

Paint+primer cobo stuff? That is a thing lol
I thought the Edger did a terrible job in your demo. That’s also the experience I had when using it. My main beef is that it just doesn’t get close enough to the edge, so you have a strip of old paint between the ceiling and the wall (or the trim and the wall). If it works for you, great! I’ll stick with my angled brush-it works best for me.
I bought one. Got paint on the ceiling. Now I have to repaint the ceiling any way. Threw it away. Taping ftw!

Honestly taping gives you the best results especially when you add i small bead of caulk and wipe smooth. You can just brush away with heavy coats and back roll and peel the tape to reveal that unbeatable straight line. The trick is to learn to apply the tape quickly. Now I can tape and caulk an average 15x15 rooms in 10mins and apply one heavy coat with back roll and pull the tape off a couple minutes later so the caulk won't fully dry and come off uneven.

Yep
You're supposed to flip the rollers up out of the way when loading with paint. The lever in the center flips the rollers up/down.
I used one of these and while it almost worked for me, I would suggest just taping everything with painters tape. Like he mentions the wheels will get just a tad of paint on the and streak your ceiling or trim. Trying to keep the wheels clean as you go sucks.
I was painting navy blue and I did a huge mess with that thing, stick to tape even if it takes longer if not you have to wait until the paint dries because if you’re doing a dark paint color you have to do a zillion passes in order to be even

Sounds like a you problem
I prefer this edger than the accubrush.
Should've primed the walls ceiling, then sanded everything again before painting. Does a whole lot better. Maybe it wasn't in the budget. It's more difficult to cut in on unprimed/unpainted surfaces, especially on dusty joint compound. Next time at least run your ceiling paint, the width of your brush, down on the walls/corners where the ceiling meets the walls.

I’ve painted for many years. That’s good advice.
I never have luck dripping that edger. I wind up putting paint on by brush.
Can you use it for textured walls too?
@horrelpoot

No, in my experience it does a terrible job.

I have horribly inconsistent textured walls that are a nightmare to paint, and I actually prefer this pad to get the parts of the wall that a roller or brush skim over.
Where can I buy? How how calling
Wouldn't this not work with texture on wall
They painting joker’s crib? Why purple
Tried this tool years ago, found it to be more of a pain in the backside than using an angled brush.

It did not work for me
pros demand still using a cutting brush, home DIY'ers before gimmicks like this ,for me thats in-between I like the old masking tape method
You HAVE to use a brush to get the paint on!
Only really works on perfect flat corners and not on textured walls or ceilings. Often the wheels pick up paint when dipping it which will smear your pristine white ceiling with (coloured) wall paint.
You gave it the ol' "College try", I'll say that for ya. That being said: I'll just stick to using a 3" Purdy Brush!
Maybe for returns that didn't matter. Beyond that most of us can cut faster and straighter with a brush
Nice video
No.primer on walls and ceilings !?!?!?!!!!!!
It does work... need a bit of practice to learn the techniques.

How can I contact you , I have a patented tool for paint protect by apply painter tape in corner area, I am from China, Sears:corner tape dispenser
It works great until you dip it too far or you get paint on the wheels or on the sides if it becomes a mess if you push too hard against Edge in the ceiling it makes a track mark on the ceiling it's no good you have to be very careful
Looks like it will work wonders if you have new construction and the lines are perfect. But honestly, I'd rather just have my four inch brush. Well

No primer on bare drywall!!
Where’s the drywall primer?🤦🏻♂️
You used wrong way
Emery edger paint brush edger. Looks about 50 times faster an better
No always start with an upward movement to the ceiling edge and then move it
PVA prime that raw drywall, then sand with 220. Then hit it with paint. That's gonna peel. Be safe
All these different gadgets….I just use my hand masker and spray with my airless. Higher quality job every time.
the line is looking like banana :))))
No drywall primer? Smh
You have to know how to put the pad on? It’s off
That's cutting the walls not ceiling
Who ever is rolling, needs more paint on the roller.. I can hear how little he has
Probably it works only for you
It's a great idea, but I'm sure there are many guys who can cut faster with a brush?
How do you get the fucking pad on the plastic thing?
By the the comments I think a edging brush would be much faster. I would use a pasters Taping Knife to get that perfect line. Assuming you can use both hands, obviously.
@ayliniemi
3 жыл бұрын
The taping knife you gotta keep wiping it off though because eventually the paint will bleed to the other side and mess your line up. That's just my experience, I'm sure there are some tricks to it.

No thanks
I cut foster than that for real......
They should have primed everything first I cut in by hand I don’t need tape lol
I cannot Free hand better than that tool no sub for practice
Hi there amigo l invent the best system ever waldo^s cutter edge not stop the best on the market today check out thanks
No sirve a mano es mucho mas rapido
Put some paint in a cheap squeeze bottle to fill the pad. You don't even need a paint tray and don't have to climb up and down the ladder....you're welcome.
Less paint is better. Load it with a brush. Only use a Shur- line. Knock- offs are rubbish. 15 min practice and you're a pro. Cut on a room in 30% of time to do it with a brush.
