Having done my military duty during the Vietnam era in the Air Force, there was a procedure to demagnetize the "skull plate" of the KC-135 and B-52 aircraft on which I worked. This was to prevent any stray magnetism from affecting the accuracy of the "Whiskey Compass" located in the cockpit. The tool that accomplished the job was a big coil of wire shaped in a circle that would then be plugged into aircraft power at 115V and 400hz. Just rubbing the coil on the plate for maybe a minute would do the job. This had to be done from outside the plane, so a jackstand was used. You'd be 20 or 25 feet up, leaning over, looking down into the windshield of the plane, and rotating the coil over the skull plate, a plate located directly above the middle of the windshield. If a plane had been struck by lightening during flight (and it happens quite often) there would be a write-up to have the skull plate demagnetized.

When the nose gear strut on an airplane with retractable gear gets magnetized, the pilots may notice that the whiskey compass reads differently with gear down or gear up. The strut is closer to the compass in the wheel well than it is when extended, and also oriented closer to the plane of the earth's magnetic field.

@Narcoleptic Most horseshoe magnets are either AlNiCo or magnetized steel. Both materials have very low intrinsic coercivity and would be extremely easy to demagnetize compared to other types of magnets. Why aren't there common horseshoe shaped magnets of different materials? It's an issue of the shape being a good match for materials which are not brittle (ceramic and NdFeB are brittle) and have a low enough coercivity to have poor reliability unless they're in a closed magnetic circuit.

Hi Mike, No they didn't get hot. The final question they asked before entering the donut was if I had removed all metal. Well, uum, yeah.... Sure enough, I still had my hearing aids in when I checked. Had to have both receiver tubes replaced. The main bodies survived. Saying.... Huh? and half reading lips sure was annoying, yet much cheaper! Heheh!

A good excuse is one you can use over and over again! :) After the MRI, they concluded they didn't find anything of concern.
