Showbiz Celebrities Endorse Margaret Thatcher at Young Conservatives Rally (1983)

On 5 June 1983, ITN's Michael Brunson reported from a Young Conservatives campaign rally in London, where Margaret Thatcher was joined by a host of showbiz celebrities including singer-songwriter Lynsey de Paul, world snooker champion Steve Davis, and comedians Jimmy Tarbuck and Kenny Everett. In a speech addressed to the party's youth, the prime minister attacked the Labour Party's election manifesto and referred to Labour as the "no help" party.

I wonder what young Tories of 1983 are doing today.

"We utterly reject this strawman version of Labour that I just made up in my head." Strong words as ever from Mrs T.

I love the fact Denis gets a little emotional over the applause Margaret gets. He was immensely proud of his wife.

Kenny appeared on the Irish chat show The Late Late Show in 1989 and was confronted by Sinead O'Connor on his appearance with the tories. He said he agreed to do it because they asked him first. Cop out answer and he just jumped on the Thatcher bandwagon in 83. No surprises Tarbuck was there. He would be mocked and ridiculed by Rik Mayall and other for this.

That's true, the problem with the Tories is that they didn't use *enough* childish and disingenuous rhetoric. Great point there.

Odd that Kenny Everett's questionable remarks weren't included in the edit but Mrs Thatcher's speech was. I wonder how the "young people giving their lives over to the state" line works with the 2024 Conservative policy of demanding young people volunteer for community work or National Service.

Kenny Everett's comedy would not fly today with all this political correctness.
