This Fleetwood, to me, is perfectly emblematic of the times. The ‘70’s were a time of excess in design and in fashion with super-wide men’s ties that had gaudy paisley prints with garish colors. But also a time of real optimism with the end of the Vietnam War, the space program, and the initial small cracks in the wall of the Soviet Union. I was just starting high school but remember the time all too well! Thanks, Adam, for documenting this car and era.

"The Sheered Look!" As Cadillac called it. Back in the day, this interior was incredibly popular and standard. It was especially elegant in Rosewood with the exceedingly rare Rosewood Firemist exterior. If you saw this Fleetwood interior when it was new 50 years ago, you would have greatly admired its elegance and fanciful, playful sophistication. It was the right interior at the right time. I saw this interior everywhere in every shade it was offered in. It is striking in blue also.

Very true. My wife totaled her Subaru, an 18-wheeler decided he needed to cross the road at that moment and she went under the trailer. She liked that car so we went to the dealer and shopped. One of the cars was completely black inside. I mean the dash, the steering wheel, the seats, the carpet, everything. It was like opening an unlighted cave and climbing in. My sister still has our parents' 1960 Buick Electra 225 Limited. What a beautiful interior, and comfortable.

Good lord, that is a beautiful interior (if not one of the most beautiful interiors I have laid my eyes on) with the most comfortable seats ever imagined in a Cadillac, along with the lack of obsessive electronics that distract other drivers and shut the whole car down if one, two, or more of the electronics malfunction (which is very common in electric cars like those Teslas)! It is a shame interiors aren't like this. Nowadays, the crappy modern-day American, European, and Japanese Cars have the same bland interior with seats that feel hard and uncomfortable, have no color and no amazing patterns with the lack of bucket seats, cloth seats, the lack of that couch-on-wheels-like feeling, the extreme reliance on electronics that shut the whole car down like I already mentioned, and the fact that they feel very small compared to the older car interiors of the 1950s, 1960s, 1970s American Cars! Why can't we have these kinds of interiors in the cars of the modern-day generation!? (Cars from 1997 to 2024/Present Day).

Very well said! I agree that this car is beautiful and elegant and such a picture of the 1970s. I don't hate the interior; no, it is not my preferred choice, but it is so representative of the designs of things in the 70s. Couches, chairs, other furniture, bed covers, fabrics - they were all very "heavy" then and this fits perfectly with that. It does seem odd that this was the standard choice, but again, I can't hate on it. Also, you mentioned how comfortable and "couch on wheels-like feeling" of the cars back then. I totally agree. Why can't we have comfortable interiors on cars nowadays? For us to have electronics shouldn't eliminate comfort and ride that these cars offered. Why do they have to be mutually exclusive!?! Sorry for rambling, but I appreciate you pointing out how awesome the cars were of the 1970s which is how I remember them and long for others like them today. I know they had flaws, but we have gone past a lot of that and it seems we've "thrown out the baby with the bathwater" in some ways.

Today’s car manufacturers could take a page from the interior design of the 1960’s thru 1990’s! The cloth interior back then may not have been appealing, but it’s 1000% better than the plain black/gray interior with color inserts they’re putting in cars today; which is cheap looking and most times incredibly uncomfortable. Today’s auto manufacturers care more technology, which they’ve gone overboard with, in oppose to creating beautiful comfortable interior. General Motors, & Cadillac, weren’t the only company making beautiful interior either, Chrysler and their line of cars, created beautiful plush leather interior and their cars drove like riding on clouds, as in a very smooth ride. Ford, wasn’t bad either, being they were made along with Mercury and Lincoln’s, lineup of attractive cars. Cars today’s aren’t worth the price they’re charging consumers. Especially, when the interior is bland and not appealing, and they prioritize technology, over beauty and comfort!

As kids in the late 1960's, my mother had a 1968 Fleetwood with the footrests and drove her crazy flipping them up/down on those long trips from Florida to summer camp in North Carolina. Ours had blue leather seats if I recall. Additionally, it only had an AM radio but had an aftermarket under dash mount 8 track player with FM tuner. Additional speakers were added. One good thing about the cars is that the air-conditioning worked very well in the summers in the southeast.

In 1987, I bought a 1980 Cadillac Coupe DeVille for $4,000. Beige paint, beige leather, beige padded vinyl roof around the C pillar. ("That's not beige, it's champagne gold.") As mentioned in the video, 1980 was the final year for the 368 cubic inch V8 derived from the 472/500 V8s, without the cylinder deactivation "feature" that plagued the 1981 models. I had new springs installed at 100,000 miles, and the floaty boaty ride remained, but the car sat high like an AMC Eagle and never settled back down. Very comfortable on our frequent trips between New York City and Pittsburgh PA, about 400 miles.

Count me in on preferring this baroque look to the fifty shades of _meh_ that wore out their welcome as soon as they appeared. I hate modern car Interiors.. and all the electronic screens... those are all going to be laughed at in about 10 or 20 years. Modern cars are more like driving an appliance. And , I give it to Cadillac that used to say they offer the 'luxury of choice' by giving their customers a myriad selections of interior styles and colors ( even carpet color ) along with a vast array of exterior colors. As the 1970's continued, interiors tended to get plusher and softer than before, with more aggressive patterns used in some cars. Colors also got a little bolder in general. This was largely due to changing styles and expectations, not just in cars, but also in clothing and furniture upholstery. It was also a way to create new interest in mature car platforms which would not be replaced until the downsizing era of the late 1970's. Carbuyers no longer wanted slippery nylon tricot seats. People also realized by the mid 1970's that vinyl was not that comfortable no matter how much the automakers tried to make it feel like leather, and that a durable but plush fabric (such as loose fitting velour) might be a desirable alternative. Ford continued to use knitted nylon fabric in the 1970's on many of its upscale interiors but even that had more of a plush feel than what was used in the late 1960's and early 1970's period.

A while back came across one of these in red, I think it was a little less tame in the red interior. I wanted to buy it, showed it to my wife, she gave me that look. I should have taken my chances…

As someone who grew up in the 70s, it doesn't surprise me that much. SO many couches had patterns similar to that.

What a shame todays young people will never have a chance to experience a roomy, deeply padded velour car interior even in the most expensive models offered by Cadillac, Lincoln and Lexus.

Looks like 70s wallpaper. They should have made the seat belts out of macrame and had a fern growing in a pot on the dash to reach total groovy.

What's odd is they match the cloth even into the pull straps on the back of the front seat, 3:05 mark, but the seat belt retractors are a different color to the interior ceiling at 2:23. Nice video. Very enjoyable. Thanks for posting.

Over time, some plastics will change color even when not directly exposed to UV rays. I'm guessing the retractor covers were a cheap plastic used across divisions that probably matched the rest of the interior better when new. GM vinyls and leathers were generally good even back then.

The plastic that the seat belt retractor covers are made from has changed from heat/and or UV exposure. They were originally made to the exact color of the headliner fabric and the hard plastic parts of the door panels and the hard plastic part of the front seat backs (which you might notice have also had color change)

Your mention of this seeming like maybe a "little old ladies' " car is how it would have been seen at the time, instead of seeming wild or crazy to people. It wasn't unusual to see cars that color back then so it didn't seem odd or over the top, and that brocaded velour upholstery looked like upholstery you would have seen in a well-appointed, but kind of staid, living room of the period.

Take a look at mid-seventies, residential, interior decor as well as mid-seventies fashion trends and you will see why the Monticello Cloth was actually an appropriate choice for the '75 model year.

Actually I didn't mind the upholstery in that yellow car at all - could get used to it quite easily, I think. However the lighter colour(s) within the pattern would show dirt and wear unless properly cleaned regularly ...

It was the dash that I always thought was weird in these cars. The tiny little pod in front you containing a hard to read speedometer and f. all else. As for the rest of the interior? Absolutely gorgeous and the exterior styling is just stunning.

As usual, thanks for another fine review of a beautiful, uncommon, part of automotive history. However, a few things: The 1975 Eldorados offered a Mosaic (or harlequin) black and white (square patterns) print, or several plaid print cloths, or also offered this Montecello Velour cloth, too, but not a "houndstooth" (that was in the '73 Eldorado cloth interiors with a subtle, fine pattern. Fleetwoods like this do have the "B-pillar" and also, correspondingly, the 133" extended wheelbase (noteworthy because it is unique among full-sized GM cars.) The side view design of the roof line of 1971 through 1976 Fleetwood Broughams, with "arched windows," was reminiscent of the 1938-1940 Cadillac Sixty-Special rooflines (those being the precursor to the Fleetwood model.) The addtion of rectangular headlamps was complimented by more defined planes and creases of the body panels on the upper front end. My neighbor, when I was eleven, got a brand new 1975 Fleetwood Brougham in Commodore Blue with matching dark blue vinyl top with opera lamps and a dark blue/light blue Montecello Velour interior and he was President of an International Corporation and it was very classy especially with the new for '75 slightly wider WSW tires. Another memorable '71-'76 Fleetwood was another neighbor's '71 in triple Sable Black with brocade cloth and leather interior, opera lamps and the lamp monitors options--because the rear window ("backlight") padded vinyl top is uniquely finished for 1971 models with a more elegant appearance, hand-fitted, and especially elegant looking--for '72 to '76, unless the thicker padding of D'Elegance and Talisman editions, the rear backlight/window had a metal border around it that was cheaper to manufacture. My Aunt and Uncle also had a '71 Fleetwood Brougham in the rare Primrose Firemist with Black Vinyl Top and Light Rose Brocade Cloth and Leather Interior with Opera Lamps and Lamp Monitors options--it was really elegant and impressive to ride in, even as young as I was!

Love it! The Monticello velour is actually more practical than solid colors--it helps hide spots. It was also available on the Eldorado coupe. I thought the standup hood ornament was standard on Fleetwood by '75, but it must have been later, as it's obviously dealer-installed on this one. Its steering wheel has perfect inlaid "wood", which is very rare. Temperature extremes made it fall out in chunks.

I love that gearshift lever. Almost S shape they use the gearshift lever up until 1991 when they discontinued the Fleetwood Brougham. That Cadillac gearshift lever was even used on the front wheel drive and Fleetwood through the 80s. One of my favorite parks Cadillac is always been the steering wheel and gear selector. That glass steering wheel just felt so premium. Although it also used Buick and Oldsmobiles.

Adam, thanks for sharing this amazing Fleetwood. I believe Cadillac was going for a classic Italian Renaissance look with this cloth pattern and the gathered/shirred upholstery work. A throwback lost on ‘70’s culture I would say. Reminds me of the “drawing room” look of some early 20th Century custom limousine interiors.

Call me crazy but I actually like the interior. The Velour cloth interior looks super comfy, but I can imagine hard to maintain compared to leather. Love the yellow exterior color and the vinyl-less roof. The 1975 Cadillac de Ville's have always been a favorite of mine. My brother owned a brown Sedan de Ville with a beige vinyl top and beige leather interior. A gorgeous car fully loaded with all of the goodies!
