    About three or four years ago I lost all the velocity on my softball throwing, and was 67 at the time. This fall I had major surgery (all tendons in rotator cuff were severed and had to be reattached) and just completed 4 months of physical therapy. Just started throwing again yesterday and of course having difficulty even throwing 30 feet. With that being said, this video about loading the scapulas just might be the key as to why I lost my throwing strength. I compared my throwing posture to what you were showing and sure enough, I wasn't loading the scaps at all and in fact was probably only 2/3 of the way back with the elbow and shoulder. Going to add aggressive stretching to my home therapy workouts and hope for the best.............Great video!

    @@cjbuysMusic Complete recovery seven months after the surgery but had to build up my throwing strength. Whatever I've lost is simply age related. Thanks for asking.

    I used to play 3rd base alot growing up, however over the last 2 years I had difficulty making a strong throw to 1st. I find myself throwing higher to get it there

    So when do you "unload" the shoulder blade? Was the loading just a preparatory thing or does it need to be kept loaded while throwing? Many thanks! Your videos are great. So thorough!

    No, all of this should happen naturally and most players who throw well never think about it at any point. But for those who have to, only the pinching part

    I wonder if throwing with a low elbow is what causes my pain when I throw I’ll have to give this a try

    It definitely could be the reason, as it increases stress on the elbow and shoulder. Most players with a low elbow don’t pinch the lot shoulder blades well

    I have high school softball tryouts next week and I have no experience playing softball… I’m 16 and I have a problem throwing the ball I keep flicking my arm and my throws don’t go further, any tips to stop flicking my arm?

    Literally same, only difference is that I played in 8th grade and STILL have this problem. And I’m about to play my first game in a few hours and I’m so nervous that I’m gonna screw it up for my team 😭. Also, how did your tryouts go ?

    I feel like when I throw hard my shoulder separates or maybe clicks when using standard 90 degree elbow position. I altered the angle yesterday to a more over the top throwing motion and it feels better but lose velocity. I had a pretty good strength program. I do shoulder presses, front raises, side raises and rear flys. I am missing something in my shoulders...

    Yeah you’re probably way too big and strong in the deltoids, which overpower the rotator cuff and are not overly important in throwing.

    @@SnapSoftball Hmm. I am more interested in developing my softball game then strength training these days. Would weighted softballs be a worthy exercise? Been looking at those.
