This video is great, thanks. I live in Toronto but my Grandparents lived in Hunstanton and my Mum took me there every few years to see them. Lots of memories of walking all over town with them, to the lighthouse, to the cliffs, cockling when the tide was out so far you couldn't even see the water anymore. Fish and chips on the way home from the place near the caravan park, with my Grandmother waiting at home with the plates warmed. A jam doughnut for dessert if I was lucky. My last visit was 2012 and you know, as far as small towns go, Hunstanton actually holds up well. It has a lot of charm.

Thanks for uploading this! I lived in Hunstanton for around 2 years in the early 90's before moving back home to Northumberland, this video brings back a lot of memories, and some bits I did'nt actually get to see, due to work and the like. This includes the massive beach beside the cliffs! I never knew that was there, I always hung around the more central parts of the town, so thank you for that!

Hunstanton is our go to town. It is lovely to walk from the old beach through the dunes to the life guard station to the craft barns which leads back along the cliff to the lighthouse. I had never heard of the area until around 10 years ago. Parents purchased a caravan in Heacham (2 mile walk along the beach to Hunny) and I’ve been coming here ever since. It’s a great little town. Reminiscent of days gone by. Ideal if you love the quieter, more laid back pace of life. There is also a lot of history locally and in the surrounding villages. Bra caster for its Roman Fort (as dug by Time Team), Heacham for Pocahontas and the Rolfe family, Hunstanton for the Le Strange family, the Sheraton wreck, lighthouse etc...

The main thing is the sunsets. They are the best. There are beach huts. Lots in old Hunstanton and you can walk the promenade to Heacham where there are even more beach huts. Our caravans were in Snettisham, Brancaster was our daily beach. I remember the crazy golf was a pond with boats you could go round and round in. That was there until late 80’s. The bric-a-brac shop near the cafe that was once Hunstanton railway station, has been there since at lease the 60’s and the shop on the corner does the best ice cream 🍦. At the top we used to go into the ‘posh’ restaurant for our compulsory knickerbocker glory, that as small I had to stand on a chair to eat. On the corner opposite the hotel was the cinema. I fell to sleep while watching Laurence if Arabia - yep that old! I have such fond happy family memories of this little seaside town that I have continued with my children and grandchildren. Stay as you are sunny hunny 💜

We went there for a week, must be 15 years ago now, great holiday. Lovely clean quiet town. We stayed in a cottage near Heacham. I remember we sat outside the Golden Lion at one of those tables you showed looking across that big green out to sea. I had a couple of pints and gave some to our dog. Weather was red hot with cloudless skies every day. Didn't go in town much. Mostly toured the north Norfolk coast. Wells, Cromer and a couple of beaches. Fond memories. Didn't know you could see Skegness over the sea. Never went to Old Hunstanton. Pity it looks nice. Thanks Tim

The pier stood till the winter of 1978 when it was finally washed away. It was possible to walk along the pier certainly up till 1971, the last time I was there before returning in 1980 having left Kings Lynn to earn my fortune in 1971...

@@WalkWithMeTim the main building of the pier also stood until 2002, when it suspiciously burnt down so the building you see there now is also not original. After the fire the owners of the pier building wanted to build something much larger but the council rejected it. Unusual since they have a habit of approving solely detrimental things for the town. It took a couple of years to get approval during which time the owners had the audacity to complain that their insurance was no longer covering their loss of earnings in the papers, despite the delays being of their own making. What my parents described as an amazing victorian seaside town is a shadow of its former self, even just the destruction of it I have seen in my lifetime. The sea life centre and mini golf used to be a boating lake until the late 80s. It had a bridge to an island in the middle with a cafe on it and you could boat under the bridge. When the sea life centre was built over half the boating lake sat derelict for 20 years. Literally it was just a hole in the ground with a permanent puddle of seawater in it. You missed the old train station and line, now a couple of oddly placed shops and some car parks, but there are remnants still there just off the seafront. A few backhanders have seen the approval of blocks of flats on some of that carpark that would have originally had the railway lines now. It would have originally been an end station I believe, with a train line running from kings lynn. It closed following the beeching report so now summer consists of a 90 minute car queue to get to the beach and a protracted hunt for somewhere to park. The building behind the arcade you pointed out used to have a massive victorian hotel on it. It was demolished and now it is one of the most hideous 80s buildings in existance, just flats upstairs and shops underneath. Interestingly the golden lion hotel behind the pier once looked like it faced a similar fate, but some shenanigans saw it being sold at auction for something like 50k in the late 90s, roughly the price of a detached house then. There were some rumblings about that at the time, and rumours of fraud for it to change money for that amount. retrospectively its lucky it was sold because it's one of the most attractive buildings remaining now and there isnt much that's original left. Not that I mind new developments, but all examples on offer there are pretty poor. The swimming pool on the front for example replaced a much nicer outdoor swimming pool. I'm not old enough to recall it but as described to me it was something quite special. However, money. Yknow. The indoor pool from the outside isnt a very attractive building unfortunately. It looks like a large dirty tetrapak. Around the late 90s a popular bar called the kitkat sat on the seafront next to the swimming pool. It would have frequent live bands and was very busy even in the 80s. However shortly after the 80s housing crash and recession it also strangely burnt to the ground. Again, it was demolished and left as waste land for many years. It's incredible how all these commercial buildings burn to the ground at the most financially opportune moments. The owner of the norfolk deli that you highlighted is a complete piece of work. That might sound harsh, but seriously have a look at his replies on the trip advisor reviews if you have any doubt and I am 100% confident you'll agree. Based on those alone I wouldnt step foot in the place. However, although the town is just a street, it is quite nice and has a few places worth a stop if you want a coffee or light lunch. Theres the marine bar just off of it which is a good spot to have a drink outside if its sunny. Sadly they built retirement homes in front of it obscuring the sea view but it is still worth a visit. Theres a few bits in hunstanton that have improved like the seafront rooftop bar you highlighted but they always seem to be temporary structures, such as huts and shipping containers. Theres so little longterm investment that it won't be long before those small improvements like old and tired and sit derelict too I expect. Keep walking further into old hunstanton and there is a few great little pubs, one right on the seafront, so a nice spot for some food and a drink whether its warm or stormy. I recall it having large glass frontage towards the sea so plenty of seats with a view. Old hunstanton itself is largely unspoilt so if you fancy something to eat then consider a visit there.

We used to stay in my mum and dads tourer caravan on the grass just behind the fair. Think its now just a car park but used to be a tourer site. Many happy memories made there, all the places you visited brought back a memory particularly walking pass the ghost train. There used to be a path just behind the ghost train that took you across to the beach. Hearing the ghost train through the back wall was scary enough for me!

The trips to Seal Island on the amphibious craft (apparently an old WW II landing craft - so we were told) and being transferred from one boat to another out at sea to get there. Amazing place!

Yes I remember Hunston as locals call it . Remember going on boating lake, before taking bus or train back to kings Lynn. They used to have donkey rides then. And many other things that are no longer there like the station. It's a small seaside town a bit Victorian I still go there reliving my past when in Norfolk. Also remember the kit kat club too.

There was a railway which closed in May 1969 just before the main holiday season,. Madness there is talk of reinstating it, the station was where you pointed out the market, it was well used even in the winter but the passenger numbers were taken during school holidays and in the winter to make it look little used, closure by stealth they called it at the time, you only have to look at the road traffic to the resort to see what a great loss it was, thank you for your interesting video.

Fascinating video. I love Hunstanton and travel there several times a year - although only 14 miles across The Wash from me, because of circumventing it by road, it's about 70 miles! The last remaining part of the original Pier was destroyed in a storm in 1978, the same one which also truncated the Skegness Pier. A long time ago there were boat trips between the two. Searle's, who run the Wash Monster, did try an idea of doing a trip over the Wash but, per usual, couldn't gain much interest at the Skegness side, so never got beyond the one trial run. Le Strange was also behind a number of buildings in his plans to develop the town, although I understand, the only one evident is the Golden Lion hotel. Nearby is the Waterside Bar - one of my favourites as, on a clear day, can sit outside and enjoy a pint looking at the Sun glinting on the Premier Inn and other monstrosities on Skegmess sea front (best view of the place 🤣). You are right about the sunsets. My attempt to photograph one last month was an epic fail as was one of few foggy days, so will have to return in near future for another attempt. Thanks again for your very interesting videos.
