Should You Tap Your Soda Before Opening It?

Check out our DIY Build Kits: bit.ly/2NnXiVp
In today's video we're exhaustively testing the myth that tapping on your soda can will decrease the amount of pressure built up in a shaken soda can. Should you tap it on the side? On the top? The bottom? Not at all? Today we're getting to the bottom of it.

Ive tested this a lot too, but all with Pepsi. All my tests have revealed the biggest factor in reducing the explosion is time. In only 13 seconds from the time the shaking stops the effects wear off. That's why the one shake blows the most, because very little time passes between the shake and the open. The only benefit of the taps is that time passes.

  • @princessaria

Lucas Kolesar you’d probably end up with soap on a stick lol. The sugar heavily accelerates the solidification/saponification of cold process soap, since it creates a larger exothermic reaction with the lye than just oils alone. But yeah, it would probably make soap that could be used, if you manage to get it into a mold in time. Royalty Soaps did a beer soap that she had major difficulties with for the same reason. You should check it out if you’re curious about what might happen with soda. :)

Last I always tap my cans on top for 2 reasons, to clean off any dust/dirt that is on top & to remove any liquid near the opening so it doesn't spray when I open it.

I had a feeling the shaker wasn't doing what this test needs

R6: funny moments I asked Nate over Instagram and he said that they won’t do that many build videos because they get a lot less views than the ones about experiments

You should've let the just sit one sit for only 10 seconds, so you're only changing one variable at a time to see whether taping helps or not

Peter Jacobs yes!! I was going to suggest changing the tapping to 30 seconds for the same reason!!

you should have tested to see if one big shake and then paint shaker was actually better than tapping

Now that you've tested the tap method, and waiting. I think you should test how long you should wait, 30 seconds heavily reduced how much fizzed out, but I wonder if a whole minute of waiting would completely negate it? :)
