I had my 2.7 HSE LRD 3 remapped, l did a long journey to the S o France straight after, gotta say like driving another car, accelerated so much better noticed the improved from pull away immediately, and the increased full consumption was certainly noticeable, local garage did it for about £175 lv had that back many fold in diesel saved. That was about 4 years ago, l did have to change intercooler down pipe but that could have split anyway.

@mellowgamer6353 Unfortunately, I had to sell it to buy my first house. In hindsight, I probably would have just gone for just the economy remap as they do have issues with the crank if over tuned. The later engines were upped a little anyway with the R-Sport edition, so they're well capable. I'd highly recommend getting an icarsoft scanner though to check the multiple sensors and scanners they have, there's several in the exhaust system alone. Had one on the DPF go prior to the remap and caused no end of woes trying to get to the bottom of the issue.

Was considering doing this until I discovered that it would cost me about an extra £200 a year in insurance costs. If you don't tell them and you have an accident you are not insured! A friend (who also has a D4) told me a friend of his was considering doing this but had an accident shortly before having it done - I was told that the first thingh the insurtance did was to check for a re-map. So, don't do it without checking with your insurance first.

From what I've read elsewhere, it's a bad idea to remap the 2.7, as the gearbox is already at the maximum of it's power threshold, which is why I've not done the same with my RRS. It'll be interesting to see if that's the case. Please keep us posted.

Not to worry anyone, I know it's not every engine anyway, but an engine known for struggling with its job out of the factory isn't in my mind best suited for tweaking to get more. I think the biggest issue with any remapped diesel is the extra smoke produced, notice after the remap when he pulls away hard 8.52 minutes, its laying down two black smoke trails? I have never had a turbo diesel thats been tuned that does not make extra smoke, especially off boost conditions, and I have had a few, Im no green nutter but do think you have to be careful of our image to others concerning visible smoke.

Hmm, re-mapping … interesting, appears to be all good there then. But on the basis that we don’t get something for nothing, I wonder are there any downsides? I always ask why the manufacturer doesn’t tune this way initially, is it maybe due to excessive fuel consumption or inability to meet emissions targets, or indeed a shortened service life? Is re-mapped equivalent to the old term ‘chipped’. A pal of mine had his Audi A4 chipped, which went somewhat quicker, right up to the point where his turbo blew up less than a year later. I have a Discovery 4, so am interested to learn about your results longer term.

  • @justinaddis1505

It’s down to emissions. Manufacturers tune their engines to the best optimal and most importantly best emissions levels. Hence the old diesel gate issues that VW kicked off. If you always consider mates saying they got such good mpg from their tdi vw I was always amazed….. with good reason.

Especially on modern diesels where the accelerator is not a linear input. 8th of the throttle is more likely about a 3rd. Most modern diesels are made like this to make the normal performance feel better and more responsive. It can leave drivers disappointed when you put your foot down and it doesn’t go much quicker though.
