That painting is beautiful. I absolutely love it. It's so gorgeous. The setting, the girl painted in red with her umbrella. I don't know why, but it's enchanting.
Thank you Jane. I am a stickler about painting the edges of my canvas. I LOVE the idea of turning the canvas around!

THANK YOU!!! I am a very very new beginner, and this technique greatly improved the look of my "painting." - I use quotes because it is actually a background only, with another medium (heat transfer vinyl) that will be added after thoroughly dried. Now I am ready to try making a real picture. Your videos are just great, and you have opened up a whole new world for me.
Thank you so much! I'm always getting paint on the front of my paintings from painting the edges! This is very helpful!
I may be wrong, but I always paint my edges as I go, so the color always match that particular area and it's always a smooth transition

This is fine. Thank you! There are no rules about the edges. Most canvases are framed that are finalized so few people see them. If you want your edges to matter, paint them. That's all that matters. A great painting won't be judged on the edges.

Jane thank you for all your tutorials you have inspired me so much I haven't painted anything in probably 35-40 years I want to paint so bad everyday I think about it but I'm disabled and live on very very low income so I will have to save for a couple months to get just the basic things I need thank you for inspiring me to go back and do what I always love to do

Seriously I have only watched two of your videos and found them both supper helpful and to the point. I had to subscribe. Thanks for the videos!
I'm glad I watched this! I never thought of painting the edges a solid color! Der... I've got my paintings stacking up waiting to have the edges painted and then varnish them. I thought I was going to have to mix paints to match the edges of all areas! That would've taken months, hence it hasn't been done yet! Now I'll be able to rock those out quickly. Thanks Jane!!
Thank you Jane for sharing it with us. You are explaining it very well a great teacher.

Very helpful. Thank you.
Love you art, your ability to teach, and your hair looks great.
Great video. Personally, I can't stand not painting them black. I put off painting the edges for weeks sometimes and when I see the ones with the white edges I'm like "UGH." And when I finally get around to painting them black, they look SO much better. It just frames it in this nice dark shadow. Also that technique for painting them is brilliant. I'm gonna use that.
I'm admiring all the stuff on your walls. You have an interesting studio/space. I especially love the OZ drawings/paintings in the background of this video. Is that your work? My husband thinks the WofO is, by far, the best movie ever made. I've been cruising the KZread world for many years searching for beginner help and your site is the only one to which I have subscribed. Thank you for the site, for talking slowly, for giving/demonstrating directions that are easy to understand, and most of all for not allowing the music volume to overwhelm your voice.
Thanks so much for your help. I am very new at painting (about 2 weeks old) and doing so well with your help. Going to do this painting today. You have a very good speaking voice and you explain and show the technique well. Its as if you next to me. Thanks again.

This is a great tutorial! Thanks, Jane. I have a question about drawing & then painting a border to frame a painting. I haven't done this before, however, my paint leaked through the frog tape, so now I have a 1 1/2 inch white border around it, so I thought I'd give it a try. I'm not sure what the best way to go about this would be. Do you have a video on doing this?

Thanks Jane. I have to admit I am guilty of doing it the wrong way. I like the all black edge concept. Will have to try it on a painting and see if I like it. I usually try to continue my painting all around though. Looks nice if you get those floater frames. Lesson learned. I usually wind up with paint all over my hands trying to paint edges. Will have to try your way. Thanks again.
@PaintingwithJane
8 жыл бұрын
+Cecilia Greenstein I'm glad I could help! I confess that I end up with paint all over my hands, too, lol. Yes, those floater frames do look really nice!!
Really depends on the painting and what you are going to do after it is done, whether or not one needs to paint the edges. If it is going to be framed, or hung as is, etc etc . Some remove the canvas and have it stretched and that bare edge is what gets attached to the new framing or whatever material one chooses to use . No right or wrong as you said....it is the artists preference But a great teaching video on how it should be done Thanks Jane .. as always another excellent video.

Great artist. I use a dobber brush (round)
i try and do my edges in with the background as im doing that so it sortof matched
Oops 😬 I’ve been doing it wrong!Thanks for demonstrating the correct way to do this. 🤗
I love that picture where can I get it?
I oil paint only and paint the edges of my canvases all the time. What is so good is you don’t need the added expense to buy a frame! I find it so easy to continue the painting around the edges as I paint. When painting the bottom of the canvas remove canvas from easel and just lay the canvas on a table to finish and let dry. I highly recommend this!
You mentioned that you have a new video every Wednesday I can't wait looking forward to it.

+Toni Raibick Thank you, Toni!
Great job! Allow me to suggest an even easier way: buy a good-sized permanent ink, black, felt-tip marker...& do it with that. Just be careful when applying it to the edge of the painting that you don't push down too hard & run it over the edge onto the front of the piece. On a 16 X 20 canvas, it takes only about 2 minutes. Happy Trails
Thank you so much for showing us the right way to do the edges I used to mess up a lot 😊 also can you please do a video to demonstrate how to varnish a painting that has a lot of texture on it? I always wonder how to smoothly varnish a painting like that with a brush
@PaintingwithJane
3 жыл бұрын
I'm glad I could help! Varnishing texture is really the same thing, you just have to pay a little closer attention and maybe do it in 2 coats. Spray varnish is always a good option, too!
