I find it weird that when people talk “safety” they seem to only focus on crime, when in reality the car dependent nature of the suburbs makes it a more dangerous place to live compared to almost any area of Chicago.

I hate, and I mean HATE car-dependent design with A PASSION. Once I move out, I will NEVER live in a place that forced me and others to drive, city, suburb, city suburb or not.

I’ve lived in both the city and the suburbs. I need a car for work, and, if you have to have a car, most suburbs are definitely easier. Oak Park and Evanston have access to the El, are very walkable, and you don’t need a car to live in most parts of those two towns. If you live in the burbs and have to travel into the city, Metra is your best bet. If you have to drive into the city, you’ll hate it. Hour and a half to two hour commutes during rush hour, and then parking costs are astronomical once you get there. If you want to enjoy chicago’s night life, you pretty much need to drive from the suburbs, since the Metra trains usually don’t run late at night unless there’s an all-city event, like Lollapalooza. I go to the Lyric for opera, or to Chicago-based theater, but only to matinees, since I can catch the train back and forth. When I lived in the city, I went to the world class Chicago Symphony Orchestra. Now that I live in the burbs, it’s such a pain to get down there and back that I started going to the Elgin Symphony-a half-hour, low-traffic car ride, free parking. I catch the CSO in the summertime at Ravinia in Highland Park. There are plenty of things to do in the suburbs. Metropolis Theater in Arlington Heights has great shows and is surrounded by tons of restuarants. Brookfield Zoo is in the suburbs. The Chicago Botanic Garden is in the suburbs. Lots of Cook County Forest Preserves are in the suburbs. Great Bike Trails are in the suburbs. Kohl’s Children’s Museum is in the suburbs. The Cubs and Sox are major league, but if you want to truly have FUN at a game without breaking the bank, the Schaumburg Boomers games are a blast. Restaurant choices? Loads of GREAT restaurants in the burbs. If you have to have a car, live in the burbs.

If commodities are more expensive in the city, couldn’t I just go to the outer suburbs for cheaper groceries? Or is that not how that works.

You could, but it likely wouldn’t be worth making the trip out there

You could take the El to Evanston for groceries, but you’d have to figure out how to get them back to your place (depending on how much you buy, might not be a big deal). It would also take a pretty big chunk of time, depending on where in the city you lived. If you are prepared to spend several hours to get groceries, it’s doable. A lot of people in Chicago do it out of necessity, since they cannot afford a car and don’t have grocery stores in their neighborhoods.

Definitely suburbs. A lot less liberals.
