Like I have gotten excited from seeing where the city repainted 'STOP' slightly misaligned over the old faded paint on the pavement, and my mind immediately thought 'DOUBLE DIE!' Hello Daniel, I wanted to let you know that you did a great job making this video. I found it to be super informative and helpful. I appreciated being able to get a close look at many examples. That 1962 rainbow toned nickel was beautiful in my opinion. I wish I understood exactly what conditions as well as how much time it takes for a coin to become toned like that. Anyways, thanks for the information. II'm looking forward to more of your videos in the future.

Thank you Susan! I truly appreciate your comment. The coin toned since it was minted which was not very long ago. Of then they react to the plastic and tone. I think this one was in a Dansco Album when we bought it and it toned in the album. So it didn't take very long. Again thanks for your comment and watching my video!

@@CoinHELPu Wait, do I understand we're saying it's "not very long" to tone since 1962? I mean yes I know nickels have been made a lot longer ago than 1962, but still, 57 years isn't a long time for a chemical reaction like this? I'm not arguing, just trying to get whether we're talking time since minting, or something that happened afterward. If the former, hey I'm 45 so if 57 years isn't "very long" that makes feel younger, so I'll take it!

They graded my 65 dime an AU 58 an if you look at a mint state 66 dime there is no comparison. I agree it's not a MS 68 dime but a AU 58 blew me away cause you won't find a cleaner dime hardly then this dime. It caught my eye from 10 feet away if that says anything an it was in charge.. I couldn't believe how nice the dime was when I saw it with magnification. Almost flawless but just a few scratches. I don't know it's just frustrating really bad

My coin shop guy recently told me that (at least by pcgs standards), any interruption from left to right does eliminate the FS designation. If that's true, I find that unfair and literally un-reason-able. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought the 'specialness' of full steps was about strike quality, not anything that happens after the strike. Granted, post-mint wear can remove steps too, but that makes strike quality a non-issue. But if the coin clearly received a sharp 5-6 steps in striking, especially if it's a mint date notorious for lousy strikes, why shouldn't a vertical nick just be figured into the number grade, same as if it was anywhere else on the coin? Using it to deny that an excellent strike occurred just seems like a manipulation to keep FS populations artificially low.

I read and have heard on many You Tube channels that in order to get the FS designation, the steps have to be 5-6, full and without any "interruption" like scrapes, slashes, dings, etc.. Some of the steps have this problem so why are they given the FS designation?

The spots are just toning and depends on the grader if it effects the grade. No real reason to go in details, some coins just have spots and toning. As long as it's not damage then it's not going to lower the grade. I can say it's not pitting or corrosion. I have also seen very ugly toned coins in MS holders.

@@CoinHELPu I wish that was true but somebody on Coin Community forum posted this reply when I asked about it (just minutes ago). Straight from PCGS, with the link below, "Any major disturbance or interruption of these steps or lines, whether caused by contact, planchet problems, or another source, will result in the coin's not being designated FS." www.pcgs.com/news/Tips-From-The-Grading-Room-Part-3 Of course I suppose there is plenty of wiggle room in the term "major" which is typical of what I find disturbing about grading companies. NO quantification of terminology, only qualification, which leaves it all wide open to interpretation. I see KZread hobbyists like you giving more thorough information FOR FREE than the graders give for all that money.

I'm hoping you can help me. I've just started going through change we have that goes all the way back to the 1800s. I've been watching you talk about Jefferson nickels with full steps, and I have found so many of these from all different years. I looked at them under a microscope to make sure I wasn't just seeing things. So I was wondering if you could tell me, what do I do with these when I find them? Do you have some kind of website where people can send you pictures just to see what you think, to see if it would be worth sending in to have it graded? So far I have gone through about 50 nickels, and I have 17 that have full stair steps. Some of them are from the 90s, some are from the 80s, some are newer.. if you could point me in the right direction I would truly appreciate it. Thanks so much.

Thank you but my video should have explained to you that FS doesn't mean a nickel is valuable and most need to grade MS67 before they are worth sending off. I do not give this type of one on one advise and neither does any expert. You can do that using images. I suggest you call PCGS, NGC or ANACS and see when they will be set up at a show. You can take your coins to them in person and discuss this with them.
