ABOUT KEPPIE
I'm Keppie. I'm a professional songwriter, and songwriting teacher. I've been teaching song and lyric writing for over 10 years now for some of the best contemporary music colleges in the world- Berklee Online, the Sydney Conservatorium of Music's Open Academy, as well as for the Australian College of the Arts. At other times, I've taught for the Australian Institute of Music, as well as the LA School of Songwriting.
My goal is to help people write better songs! My experience in the classroom, with thousands of students at this point (many going on to find careers and success in music), is that your songwriting, like all things, can get better with meaningful, deliberate practice. My intention is to share the skills, knowledge, information, and ideas that I've gathered with anyone who wants to improve their songwriting.

I am fulfilling a life long dream of music school, 2 year college at the moment, in my early 50's. My story is like Benny's - self taught with a lot of gaps. In fact, that is what I told the director as well. 2 cancers were and are my motivator to finally do my life long dream of music and my love and passion of music helped me through cancer treatment. So, life long dream, love, passion and healer - Music... Gives me a reason to keep going and survive. Berklee next LOL!

I started music school at age 43 and it was without doubt the best decision I've made in my life. The structured learnings are one thing, but the connections are equally as important. I found my people! Highly recommend taking the plunge if you're a little bit older.

Hey Johnny. Such a great story! ‘Finding your people’ is one of the greatest feelings and a big reason to take the plunge with formal study. Thanks for sharing!

Thank you for this. As someone in their late 40s with children and a career (not in music) I don’t think I am headed back to typical “music school” as a full-time student. But like most watching this, music is a passion and I want to get better. Are there books / courses you guys recommend (besides your obviously awesome workshops 😉)?

Hi Keith. Benny here. In addition to Keppie’s amazing list, I’ll add a few. I think Kep has covered a lot of the great technical resources for songwriters. In addition, I have found several books to be incredible helpful in developing a stronger creative process or flow - concepts that can be applied to many different areas... Some of these fall into the psychology or philosophy category… The Practice - Seth Godwin Art and Fear - Bayles / Orland The Gift - Lewis Hyde Mastery - Robert Green Lateral Thinking - Edward deBono The Artists Way - Julia Cameron First You Write A Sentence - Joe Moran Also, I’m a big fan of Masterclass.com - especially when looking at how to tell great stories and the mechanics of narrative - of note are: Billy Collins David Mamet Aaron Sorkin Neil Gaiman Margaret Atwood To get access to all lessons you need an annual subscription, or you can purchase lessons individually. Hope this helps! Enjoy

Thanks for the feedback! Great lists of resources. Now I will have a few semesters worth of material to work through.
