Hey bud! Yess they prefer the degree especially the major airlines. But its better you do a degree non aviation related and get your ratings from a flight school (thats cheaper) and they dont care what field its in, they consider all majors. If anything happens to your medical your liscences are not valid anymore. They care more about your medical

My advise is to get a college degree in Aircraft Maintenance Engineering or Aircraft Maintenance Management while you flight train. This gives you more options if you decide not to continue with a pilot career later on.

@@mattmacdonald1967 Yes, I did this 40 years ago. There are more colleges around that offer the BS degree. First, you complete the A&P and then complete the engineering classes or management for the degree. During all this time, complete your flight training. Yes, it will be very busy.

Between cost and time I was wondering to do BBA instead of Bachelor in Aviation Management while I’m doing my ppl. Do u think is possible? Or should I finish aviation management first then do ppl? Thank you very much for all the value information.

Going to UND for commercial aviation in two weeks… the cost is 72 for tuition for all 4 years and 78 for the pilot program which is not that bad for flight training. Can’t forget the housing too which is 10k a year. So ya it’s definitely scary that I will be debt close to 200k but UND is a great program and will definitely make great connections that will make me have more opportunities in the aviation industry. Also have a great college experience.

This is Prashant Ranjitkar from Nepal and I had some queries and confusion. I am interested in aviation and piloting and I was wondering whether an international student can get a job as a pilot in the USA after doing a bachelor's in aviation? If a non-US citizen or non-green cardholder can work in USA or will airlines hire foreigners and help to provide or sponsor with a working permit/visa? What are the aspects for an international student in terms of career and what are the job opportunities?

The absolutely less expensive, flexible, and quality flight training is Purdue Global online. You can flight train at an approved local 141 flight school which saves on living costs plus your aeronautical courses are online and your Purdue Global professors monitor your flight training while you earn a degree. You have an experienced aviation mentor helping you with every decision…and the college degree is 30% less than going to an expensive campus.

Going through part 141 with a two year program. R-ATP 1,250 hours which helps a lot as well getting in the airline industry fast.

This is indeed a fine video, although you don't answer the question that you pose for yourself in the video title. ("Q: Should you go to college for aviation? A: Maybe.) One thing that might make a difference, so far as I understand things, is this: if you are a strong applicant, financial aid for universities can significantly decrease the cost of attendance. Purdue out-of-state tuition is about $15,000 per semester, but university students are eligible for scholarships that private flight schools don't offer, and that can bring the cost down significantly.

What kind of education is required to attend aviation school?

I wouldn't say more airlines are requiring less college degrees as much as the regional airlines are more flexible about not having a degree, at the most a regional airlines may ask for a two year degree.

Totally about the regionals. Quite a few majors are no longer requiring a degree but it is definitely a big plus if you have one. Thanks for the comment!

University; live in a co-ed dorm for the social aspect with a wide gender, race, regional, cultural, student body (not a frat white male animal house and for sure not a military academy), however if you want to join the military flight training after university it is the most tech flight quality training of any civilian flight schools part 61 or 141, but highly structured & fast paced. You would not believe how many good tech pilots who have no social skills, even some do not consider Flight Attendants as crew members, these pilots tend to go into the training department in the dark simulator box. Half of going away to university is not only for the tech ed but also for developing a well rounded education and the social aspect on interacting with other crew members who come with all genders, races, regions, cultures, religion or lack of, in America & the world. Which a number or airlines in the world have greater pay, benefits & respect for pilots then USA management airlines. Plenty of state universities (much lower cost) associated with flight schools for class credits toward a degree. Also pick a university in friendly weather conditions (not 20F below snow ND or 100F high humid FL) weather can play havoc with a smooth training progression program. Great to be pumped up & ready to take a your check ride then here comes another tornado.

Well done young man. I’m a retired aviator (military/contractor)…been flying since 1980. Proud ERAU/Dayton Beach grad (1988)…Army ROTC to flight school…flew helicopters and fixed-wing. Have lots of friends in the airlines and corporate. As a father of two, both kids went on to college or trade school. Wife a lawyer, she obviously went to undergrad/law school. I got two master’s degrees cuz the military made me go/paid for them. Nuff background…he’s my advice. Aviation is a trade, a professional trade. One doesn’t need a college degree to fly, clearly. However, to be competitive in the airlines/corporate or to go into the military, a degree is a requirement. A college degree signifies several positive traits and produces an older applicant. That normally translates to a little more maturity. Bottom line…affordability. If one can afford it, always always go for the education as it comes with more than just a degree (life experiences); however, if resources (time/money) are a constraint, then getting ones’ license/certs as quickly as possible to gain the necessary aircraft hours is probably the best course of action. Regardless of how, flying and aviation is the best most rewarding career…the best office view in the world, and working alongside other aviation professionals is a wonderful life. Best of luck to all in this endeavor. Enjoy every minute as it goes far too quickly!

Got my A&p ,work I’m avionics. Very happy with my career

I already have a bachelors degree but want to go to a university with a flight school so that I can use a federal fafsa loan so that I don’t need a co-signer on a loan. The private flight schools don’t allow you to use fafsa and you need a private loan.

I think the priority shouldn't be to the best candidate for the airlines. Instead it should be to get to 1500 hours quickest. The airlines have a shortage, they will hire most. But seniority is key.

While working on flight training at my local airport that I work at, I am also doing a 2 year paid internship with the local aircraft mechanic shop so I'll get a cfi rating and my a&p mechanic certification at similar times. That way I can get a job building hours towards an ATP but also have a very solid backup as an aircraft mechanic

I believe at the majority of universities, you need to be an aviation related major to do flight training. I would research that as it is unique for you!

So does Part 141 and part 61 matter then? Or will both of them get the same goal eventually?

It doesn’t matter whether or not you fly through a part 141 or 61 flight program, you receive the same exact licenses and ratings. However, the two offer two different paths to get those licenses and ratings depending on your situation. Hope this answers your question!

@@JINSEOK3716 I am not familiar with the title “Aviation Technology.” If it is a degree where you get your A&P, you will not be doing any flight training. Aviation management is generally the business side of things (not pilots) although this isn’t always the case. Aeronautical science, Flight science, etc, is generally the students who are doing flight training at the university. You do not need to get your ratings at a university! Any local flight school can do the same thing.

Nope! I did my private while in high school and now am doing the rest of my ratings while in college.

No, I go to Riddle and trust me it’s not all that. Yeah the restricted ATP is nice and it’s nice having the airlines come to school and what not, but honestly the cost and overall lack of practicality of a flight degree in anything outside of aviation makes me feel it’s not worth it. Plenty of pilots in the majors have degrees in things that has nothing to do with aviation and having a regular degree will give you a solid backup. Very informative video though snd you make great points 👍

@@boeingfan2479 it’s a matter of paying for it, people can’t pay unless they have the pilots license hidden within a college degree that you can get a fasfa to help pay for.

I'm a CFI at WMU and did most of my training there and it is easily better than Purdue or Embry Riddle. It does cost a lot but nothing compared to those two and you fly better aircraft than them. $250,000 is a gross overestimate to how much it costs at WMU.

Can someone explain to me how the money works. Say I wanna go to Purdue to become a pilot and I get all of my certifications there and stuff, is the only thing I pay the tuition and room and board and stuff that every college kid has to pay for, or do I have to pay for all of that plus extra stuff for the flight aspect of college

You will have to pay for everything the traditional student does (room and boarding, tuition, etc) AND all of your flight fees which can be an additional $60,000-$100,000 depending on where you train.

@@LukePylypciw but if tuition cost in-state is about 12 thousand a year which equates to about 48k. 60k-100k + 48k tuition is ranging from 108k-148k. This is way less than your 200k-250k or more to go to places like Purdue to receive all your licenses.

When I studied on campus at Purdue (West Lafayette, Indiana) I saw a LOT of pilots there in the military. A LOT. Purdue is no party school… it’s a very rigorous university.

There is never a 100% guarantee but the best chances of becoming an airline pilot would be to go through a flow program like Delta Propel or United Aviate! Hope this helps.

I have no knowledge on any schools outside of the US. Although they’re SO many in the US. Just search it up on google and you’ll get plenty of results. The best school is different for everyone.

some universities I recommend are Auburn, Ohio State University, Embry-Riddle, North Dakota, and Purdue.

You do not have to go to an aviation college, and in my personal opinion nobody should. Here’s why: pretty much every single aviation colleges training rates is extremely high. On top of that if your medical ever has issues for whatever reason or you lose it, you are out of a job with a useless aviation flight science degree. R-ATP is extremely overrated. 1000 hours is nice, but not worth it in the grand scheme of things. I was set and signed up to go Western Michigan University in 2020, and I pulled out at the last second because I didn’t want to be $200,000 in debt. 2 years later, I am a CFI at a local airport and 1 1/2 years away from a business degree. WMU is so backed up that I wouldn’t even have a private yet if I went. I will likely reach 1500 hours end of 2023. I wouldn’t be anywhere close to that. I’m also only $60k in debt compared to the $200,000 I would’ve been. My best advice to you guys, get your certificates at your local airport, go to community college for a year or two, and get a degree you can use incase you lose your medical. You will save a great deal of time and money.

Thanks Mark. It sounds like with your specific situation you made the right choice. I think a collegiate flight program is the right choice for many people. For example, I’m attending a university for aviation management which leaves me with many options if I ever wasn’t able to fly. I didn’t apply to WMU for the exact reason you stated. Thank you for the questions! In the US, you have to complete high school to earn admission at college. First, I would start with focusing on school and getting good grades! Once your junior and senior year (11th and 12th) come around, you can begin looking at different universities that offer aviation programs. You will need to go to the schools website to apply and submit your high school transcript, SAT/ACT scores, reference letters, and often times an essay to give the admissions counselors insight on who you are as a person. I hope this answers your question!

Great topic. Although many disagree with me, here’s my opinion on the matter. I’m not knocking these institutions that issue costly degrees with certification, however ATPs with, or without a degree are being furloughed as we speak. When “auto land” and “remote flying” become a household topic and the future of commercial aviation, I know a lot of pilots who will look back at their ADM ( airman decision making) and wonder if $150K paid to a part 141 institution was worth it.

Why he says 250k to be an airline pilot in embry riddle? Like the tuition per year is 33k with no scholarships. For 4 years is like 129k which by having a high gpa and extracurriculars u can lower that price... i dont understand this dude

Thanks for the comment. Tuition is one part of the equation. You’re not taking into consideration the $60,000 - $100,000 on flight training, room and board, books, checkride fees, meal plans, and various other expenses. When you add all of this together, you’ll see where I get that figure from.

Ok ATP flight school is an absolute scam and it sounds too good to be true simply because it is, so many people I’ve met got kicked out of the program simply because they fell behind schedule and they want to advertise their lightning fast pace

seems like the mottos you have used (coming up, keep the blue side up) are taken from another youtuber, "74 Gear, Pilot Kelsey". hope, you have taken his permission. ultimately, these are intellectual property and that brings another can of worms which is copyrights infringement. just wanted to give you ideas that you might have face to deal... good luck with your flight career.
