Should You Get Pet Insurance in 2023? + tips for covering high vet bills

Have you considered getting pet insurance for your cat? I never had until my cat, Katniss, recently got quite sick and ran up substantial veterinarian bills. I was shocked how quickly fairly basic treatments added up! My vet warned me this is because pet medical expenses have been trending the same way as human medical expenses lately (nothing but UP!) This experience caused me to reevaluate my perspective on cat insurance and research it thoroughly. Here, I share the basics of what I learned including how exactly pet insurance works and the many factors that influence cost. I also tell you about Katniss's illness and what it cost me in vet bills, as well as share the quotes I received for pet insurance and break down if/how much having insurance would have saved me. Additionally, I give a clear recommendation for whether I think cat owners should buy pet insurance in 2023 and share what I ultimately decided to do for Katniss and why. Finally, I provide alternative ideas if pet insurance isn't for you, as well as give tips anyone (whether you have pet insurance or not) can utilize to help cover an unexpected high veterinarian bill for their cat, dog or other pet.

What are your experiences with pet insurance?

As I've said before, I'm so grateful I had pet insurance when I did. It saved me so much stress when my Rascal got sick. Also in addition to the very good information you've given, there is a company I've heard of called PAWP. I don't really know too much about them but I believe they are some kind of "fund" you pay a very low amount for, and if a dreaded emergency does happen, you call them, and they pay your vet directly. I also think the are less stringent about prexisting conditions. It might be worth something to look into for Katniss.

Thank you for the recommendation - I will definitely look into PAWP and educate myself on them! I can totally imagine the mental comfort that being insured brought you - one of the things that threw me off is how the shock of a high unexpected bill - even if you can afford it - totally skews your thinking. I never want my pet medical decisions to be made based on anything other than what is best for the animal but financial shock can impact decisions in the heat of the moment. Now that I am aware of this I'll go in eyes wide open to the next situation (hopefully there isn't a next medical crisis for Katniss but you never know!)

@@MeowmyandMe PAWP used to pay the vet directly, apparently they changed that policy for some reason, but the DO cover a once a year emergency, even with pre-existing conditions for 3000 dollars for a once a year emergency for like 14 dollars a month.

@@rascalandluci definitely good to know! I could make a whole other video going into depth on the financial aspect of insurance, because the more I analyze it the more I realize certain things - essentially it is a gamble on many levels and you will have people for whom it pays off big time and others for whom it isn’t worth it.
