As someone who likes keeping long nails but also loves to game and mechanical keyboards, low profile keebs allow me to game and still use a mechanical keyboard comfortably without having to remove any of the keys to make space for my nails. Currently I only like using xda or dsa profile keycaps on mechanical keyboards because they’re more comfortable for me to use without sacrificing my fashion with my nails. Low profile boards are still the #1 best for this need however.

thank you for the information! I've been searching for a while now for a keyboard to solve the long nails + gaming problem...I want something akin to the cherry mx brown switches with low profile, and I didn't know that keycaps had classifications...I would love to have the keyboard split as well and angled down rather than up, but the tactile + low profile components are currently my #1 prioity - do you have any suggestions?

I think the major blocker is there's no standard for low profile switches and the patent isn't open yet for other companies to freely use. Kailh has their v1 and v2 choc switches but there's still smaller and more niche proprietary switches being used on prebuilts. I know others have modded the nuphy low profile boards and would love to see how it goes in your case.

I ... actually feel like a alien after watching this (really nice) video. I've been using one single low profile keyboard for over 10 years now and once i was ready to upgrade... i got the "oh my god, these keys are... REALLY high" effect on all the setups i tried, almost threwing up each time because my brain just can't process the huge travel time of the keys. I think it's about personnal preferences, and on my end, Logitech 915/815 is the best full size, high quality, low profile keyboard i've found, absolutely love it. If someone is like me... just try it out !

i remember the time when i was searching for mechanical keyboards for my first computer, low-profile keyboards were appealing to me because i was used to laptop keyboards, and i thought the design, the quietness, the switch travel distance could replicate laptop keyboards the best but i guess i was just new to the hobby and i didn't have the knowledge of what mechanical keyboards are good at

I’m in this position right now. Came from a laptop and just bought an Akko 3068b plus. But my hands are already killing me and the travel distance of the keys feel so uncomfortable. I’m thinking about returning it and getting a low profile mechanical. Came across this comment while searching for what a good one is. I love the thock. Hate the feel though. *Update* (2 months after I wrote this comment portion above) I returned the Akko board, and got a Logitech g915 low profile board. And sure enough after a week of using it, I realized it was “mushy” feeling, even with the clicky switches it has. So I ended up buying yet another “normal size” mechanical board and modded it out, and now I’m completely comfortable using it, no wrist or arm pain anymore, it all went away. I did discover that I like cherry profile keycaps over the taller SA profile that my first Akko board had. And that probably helped with less finger / hand strain. So, if you’re like I was, and going back n forth between normal or low profile mechanical, go with the normal, put some nice switches in it, and try some different key cap profiles to see what you like more. I’m glad I stuck it out because I love my “normal size” mechanical board now.

@@SybilMystery I am in the same boat, I got used to laptop keyboards, they are just way more comfortable to me, after 3 years of using a mechanical keyboard and not getting used to it (I have way too many typos due to hitting adjacent keys just because the keycaps are so tall and thick), I just grew to hate it, I can't type with this thing and I'm a fucking programmer. I just bought the keychron k5 I just hope it fills my expectations I'll update when it arrives. I can't afford to jump between keyboards if this happens to be a disapointment I might just go for a cheap membrane "magic" like keyboard.

Update: I just recieved it and oh my god it was exactly what I was looking for, the brown switches feel marvelous, my typing experience just rocketed no longer pressing adjacent keys every other keystroke and I just had it for less than 24 hours compared to 3 years of just trying to convince myself that "I will get used to it over time right?". I have to say, if you're in this exact same situation where you're looking for a low profile keyboard because you got used to typing on a laptop keyboard and your typing style is not suited for tall keyboards get one without thinking, it is 100% what you're looking for. P.S. Linear switches suck for typing. I'm never going back.

I am a laptop typer, always been doing that. As I am drawing closer to my retirement I created a beastly gaming rig and with that one needs a keyboard. I have tried a few, from membrane to RK87, and now I have settled on a RedDragon Horus TKL 621. I can tell you that I am enjoying this so much I might even order a second one for my laptop (also a MacBook Pro 14") Mine has the linear red switches and one thing happened when I received it. One of the keys was stuck, the stem must have been bend or not enough quality control. Luckily, there were spare switches, so the story almost had a happy ending. Trying to pull the switch, it became quite obvious why the key would not release. The switch was a pain to pull. The other switches around it were fine, I thought at one moment I might break the board. But wiggle, wiggle, and it came off. I love to have my palms on the table/desk because I got giant hands, and long fingers. Now I do not need to raise my hands too much and it is like typing on a laptop.

The travel distance doesn't seem much lower than a regular mechanical keyboard. For me a low travel distance is the most important factor, I find it less straining for my wrists and I make less typos.

I got a Nuphy Air60 and, though I was disappointed by the limited low profile switch options, found I was able to do some bottom foam and tape mod to get a really nice sound. Then, I discovered the Epomaker NT68 which you can get for low profile or normal size switches, both still using fairly low profile bodies. I got the normal size switch version and have modded it with lubed oil kings and am super happy with the sound. I don't see myself going back to low profile switches, or buying any more boards for that matter, but Nuphy is releasing more low profile switch options this month.

I'm all about the whole ergonomic thing on keyboards, and what I've noticed is that negative angle boards with a wrist rest seem to be the most comfortable boards I've ever typed on. It feels so much better when my hands are facing down, instead of them being raised up or flat on the desk. The only custom board I've seen that had that feature was the Kangaroo.

True, having a Logitech MX Keys is so much more comfortable than my 60% mechanical keyboard, I'm much fast at typing on it too despise the fact that I use it 10% of the time

Angling your hands down is much more ergonomical than having to raise it. I don't know why almost all keyboard have risers in the back, when you raise keyboards it usually results in an awkward typing angle.

I think on a board like this, silent switches make sense, as you might use it in a quite working environment or a library, where you would otherwise disturbe other people.

i use a low profile mechanical keyboard not because of any reasons mentioned. i don't travel with the keyboard i find no ergo benefit from a low profile vs high i use a low profile mechanical keyboard simply because i prefer it. i'm a long time laptop user, and switching to a desktop pc, i needed a low profile keyboard. my typing style demands it. i'm simply more comfortable with it.

As a programmer and video gamer ive always prefered low profile keyboard because of the low activation height, volume, and ergonomics. Traditional mechanical keyboards feel almost laborious after spending all day and night at the keyboard and the sound is super distracting. Id consider something like this with mint or bananas but i need to try before i buy...

Yes, for travel, but personally I prefer tactiles on them which reduce my typos and feel somehow great (don't like them on full height though)

If I'm not mistaken, these are the same Kailh (choc) switches that Logitech G915/915 TKL uses.

I went through the Keychrone k6, all the logitech mx.. And just settled down with keychrone k7 brown switches with the pbt keycaps. its the only keyboard i haven't felt typing fatigue in after typing for a long time... Loving it...

Split spacebar is wonderful for porductivity it can be used as fn key once you try it there's no way back

I'm planning to buy one for working while traveling, since I plan to use a portable laptop stand to improve my posture and the stand raises the laptop's keyboard too high

As far as the portability is concerned, I have a logitech G915 cause for work I just have a laptop, and tend to input a lot of numbers so not having a numpad is annoying. I don't think I would ever do a custom low profile keyboard though. It just doesn't seem worth it for the same reasons listed in the video.

This is a really well made video. Thank you for putting in the effort to make it so pleasureable to watch. I am looking for a low profile keyboard because I was a 100% laptop user for the majority of my life, and now that I have a normal computer and a proper desk I need a keyboard. The keyboards I have gotten (I get keyboards from local stores, nothing fancy) don't feel as good to use as my laptop keyboard so im looking for one that can match it.

@@barb0za0 I found a comment here that got a Keychron lowprofile keyboard so I decided to get one myself. I have the Keychron K1 Pro and its doing alright. Im not the best to determine if its good, I dislike typing in general.

i own a keychron q3 and i always raise my hand while gaming (csgo). it is really stressfull for my hand to stay in that position for a long while (for example when deathmatching there is no time for pause). that's why i will try out a low profile keyboard.

honestly I think the hover/not hover typing posture is the difference maker for me. I'm always reasting my forearms on the table when typing so low profiles have always felt more comfy and gives me less hand pain at the end of the day.

Usually i use my macbook pro 14 keyboard... recently i bought an external 27inch monitor for me and now thinking to buy a mech keyboard for this setup.... i am thinking on 2 options with brown keys, but one is full height keyboard and the other is low profile one.... , 90% of time i wil ljust type on it so i think low profile would fit me better.... but sometimes i may play some casual games on it.... so wanted to ask, is it ok to play games on low profile mech keyboard like for exmaple keychron k5 pro?

Hhkb is slightly taller and more pricey but layout is better for ergo. Additionally, the silenced sound profile is more satisfying and less offensive in the office. If I’m bringing a keyboard with me to work, it’s my go to.

s someone whoe used a mechanical keyboard on a laptop with them, i had the extreme caase of the laptop being water damage so i just had to have an external keyboard. doesnt mean i felt good about it.

Low profile boards are super neat, but I feel the portability aspect is very much weakened by the lack of silent low profile switches. If I pull out a loud low profile keyboard in the library that's not gonna be great for my popularity!

Everyone should use low profile for optimal ergonomics, with wrist resting on table or wrist rest to make it flat.

I do video editing at work on my laptop (laptop keyboard is terrible, few keys are mushy/stick or don't read). My laptop is already quite heavy being a 17.3" gaming laptop, added in my 8tb external dive, my multi-pound portable laptop charger, headphones, mouse having a full sized keyboard is not something ideal. A low profile portable one works for me quite well.

I'm trying to find a keyboard which is: full size, uses brown switches and is low profile. I found one years ago and it's hands down the best keyboard in this multiverse. I cannot use anything else since that but they stopped making that keyboard so I'm desperately trying to find similar one but seems nobody is making those. Any ideas?

Keychron k5 (normal, SE o PRO variants) might be exactly what you're looking for but beware, they usually run out of hot swappable browns pretty quick.

Well, low profile chocs v1, are the standard on split kb community right now, sunsets or 20g lineal are my favs.

Definitely more comfortable for gaming than for typing. When gaming I always rest down my wrist on the surface and the low profile keyboard allow me to lower my fingers more.

For the more portable argument, I would just go for a 40% (levinson let's split is my favourite), and it fits in a nintendo switch grip case.

One more senario is for work professional who have desktop in their office with a crappy keyboard. Carrying the low profile keyboard is easier. I tried to take k8 pro in office, its shear weight made me diverted to low profile. I really want a low profile be bit thicker and have option to lube keys 😂

I think low profile keycaps are amazing for gaming. When doing fast paced action in games, sometimes your fingers can get stuck on the gaps of the normal ones. Sometimes when the weather is hot your hands become sweaty and can slip of easy on the normal keycaps. The small gaps just makes it hard to do PvP.

There is one other MAJOR reason for buying a low profile keyboard. This is the total KEY TRAVEL. A Macbook pro keyboard has about 1.1mm of total travel. Most mechanical switches have 3.2 - 4mm travel. I'm hoping the low profile keyboard solves this issue because so far it is something that is still annoying to me.

My work backpack has a laptop and a stand to put the screen at eye level to save my back when at customer sites so an external keyboard is a must. Again: customer office so I'm not gonna go in with normal profile Gateron Blues 😁 portability, low sound level with reds & ergonomics: check, check and check... All must-haves for me.

I'm one of those who want a low profile for shorter distance, for me that's feel. That said, I also care about the sound. I dislike sound of my KB the less it makes the better IMO.

Used a laptop forever so low profile is what’s the most comfortable for me

This is nowhere near close to that. Full switch is 4mm travel, this is 3. Laptops are 1.5

Been thinking about getting a low profile 60% for when I play Rust. Seems like the ergos might help out.

A low profile keyboard and Pegasus silent switches (Gamakay?) Pre-built would be a really good option... Same for the NuPhy low profile ones and any others... Low profile Pegasus.... Yup... And prefer weird, as wireless keyboards and mice can be hacked from a distance... And some times long distances....... Look it up....

Maybe you should try a review from a tool standing point, rather than a collectable standing point and a bit of logic might help too. There's a lot of good going for low profile, it just has to be made right, which sadly in a market where ppl relate low profile to laptop keyboard and apple magic crap, it's not looking well. 2.5-2.7cm tall at the highest point (keycaps included), 2.7-3mm travel, 50gr linear. NO FLAT KEYCAPS. Doesn't matter if it's low quality. Get one of those and use it for a few weeks, than go back to your default. You'll find out the benefits that you clearly missed for this video, by a 1000 miles.

Normal mechanical keyboards are pretty much guaranteed to give you some sort of arm/wrist pain later in life . Wirst rests don't seem to really aliviate the problem and no ones got time to hover thier arms in the correct position for 5+ hours. There's been way too many horror stories of people getting injuries online as of late, with the popularity of mechanical keyboards. Ergonomics are hard, and most people are just not good at them. Low profile allows you to normally wrest your wrist on the desk and type for hours without strain from the height of the keyboard.

I rest my wrists because my elbows are also on they table (keyboard is further away compared to your writing type)

its interesting, then iam the complete opposite to you. from 1997 to 2007 i always had normal keyboards, then i got a low profile one and regular keyboards instantly felt obsolete. like they have unecessary flesh to it, that has no use. i never care about rubber dome and the machanics about it, regular keyboard, just felt outdated in the same way. a cellphone from 1996 felt outdated to a razor v3, is that even rings a bell in our times anymore. but the thing is: low profile, ultra flat mechanical keyboards, are exotics even to this day

I disagree with you. I specifically searching for low profile keyboard because it's much more convenient to use. I've triged G715 after using K380 Logitech keyboard for 2 - 3 years and so much discomfort. IDK how people are using these mechanical keyboards with high buttons. I tried several month but in the end i gave up and looking for a low profile now. I have two options : Razer DeathStalker V2 PRO TKL or as usual logitech 380s.

Giving a clicky low profile a chance is worth it if you can't tolerate the noise of a normal clicky keyboard. It's more tolerable, not by much but may enough for many.

I love my gamdias hermes m3 , sadly it stopped working after 5 years of using it tips 4 you, you should use every keyboard near the edge of the table so you don't need any resting attachment and it will be more comfortable for your hand

i think i used a notebook 80% of my life, so i got used to using the low profile keyboard

It's all about minimalism for me. I always start with the assumption that smaller is better, and then explore the features of the larger products to see if they are able to justify their additional size.

IMHO The arm rest posture in your review is not ergonomically sound. To avoid wrist fatigue, it is better to rest your elbow on your adjustable armchair (shoulders relaxed, elbow on the armrest) and your wrist never touch anything avoiding injury. As your chair vs. desktop height is set so your hand falls on your mouse horizontally, without flex, then the lower keyboard height allows you to type with our arching your wrist and you get the low-profile agronomical advantage.

Low profile kb is for my gf with long nails 😂

Lofree Flow is lightyears better than this. Thocky sounding and creamy linear switches.

In short, people who go for low profile keyboards are people who already used to laptop style keyboards and/or could not get comfortable with a normal mechanical keyboard, isn't that obvious guys???

Wrong. Ppl that shop for keyboards as a tool and not as a collectable. Low profile are nothing like laptops. I don't like "normal" keyboards, but i cant stand laptop keyboards. A 2.5cm total height it's far more comfortable than a 4.5cm. There's been several experimented writers that did tests on a short travel switch and surprise to no one, they write slightly faster, and it doesn't produce a lot of noise, so you don't have to use crappy mushy switches because low profile linears are already on that level. 2.7-3mm 50gr linears still feel a lot like mechanical, and far from a laptop, but a lot snapier and comfortable than your usual keyboard with linears. The problem, is that both customers and manufacturers, go by trends and are very liner thinking just like you. So half the market try to emulate the Apple magic keyboard, using too low travel switches and flat keycaps, which makes for a very shitty experience.

i use a keychron k3 with brown switches. i alternate working from home and the office all week and it's nice to have something small i can toss in my backpack. i also have a fairly light touch and the low profile caps and switches feel nicer to type on in my opinion

maybe your laptop keyboard sucks. Then you really do need a portable kb

@@gabrielchan4420 definitely not. Typing feel is great, especially for a membrane keyboard, and they have a really slim profile and low weight which is more important for portable keyboards. Don't get me wrong, I like my mechanical keyboards too but there's a place for both and it's hard to beat the Magic Keyboard for the sort of job the keyboard in this video is about.
