Should You Get A Car In Colombia? | Let's Talk About The Difficulties

Thinking About Relocating To Medellin? Get to know the good, the bad and the ugly, of Medellin.
🎥 E- Guide 🎥
Are you planning to get a car in Colombia?
It starts by bringing your car. You are not allowed to bring a used car into Colombia. That means you are just allowed to import a new car or an old-timer.
In case you are planning on getting your car in Colombia, you need to know that the prices will be higher for a new vehicle. Colombia doesn't produce its own cars, therefore, you pay a lot more.
How about driving in Colombia?
You are allowed to drive a car in Colombia as long as you are a tourist. As soon as you get a visa you have to get a Colombian driver's license. You are not allowed to drive with a foreign driver's license anymore.
What does that mean for you?
If you still want to drive in Colombia you have to attend a driver's school again. Attend theory class and driving classes even though you already know how to drive a car.
You need to take a written exam and pass a driving test in order to eventually get your driver's license.
Watch the video in order to get all the information you need about having/getting a car in Colombia.

I've been her in Medellin for 3 years now and have never seen a super bad auto or moto accidents like I see in the States. I think it's largely due to the speed here is much slower with speed bump and all of that in place. What blows my mind here is the adrenaline junkies who come here to race Bicycle or skateboard down the Palmas from Rio Negra and dart in and out of cars taxis and buses! Oh and the little kids on their bikes racing dawn that hill to bat ass crazy!

There is a process for bringing a car into colombia. Many people do it every year. Ive never done it but lots of people cross the Darien Gap. I've never driven in colombia but I've done pretty well in other south american countries. The traffic rules are basically the same. If you're not willing to get somewhat aggressive you won't get far.

I think you are required to have a driver's license in Colombia only if you are a local or are staying in Colombia for extended periods of time. I have driven en Colombia many times, I've been stopped by the authorities while on the road and I have never had any issues at all, they ask for my DL and I show them my US DL and that's it. Plus, there are plenty of outsiders that bring their own vehicles to Colombia for 3-6 months and they are not required to have a Colombian DL.

I have a fairly big bike so now I just start fast and get ahead of pack and then pretty much drive like most all others. However, I do find when someone tries racing with me I'll take the bait. Which is so stupid. I just need to grow up lol! Get one a smaller one. I would recommend 2 pulsar 400 or Royal Enisfield 400. Both have enough passing power going up hill. Also if you want more info on Roayl Ensfiled watch "Itchey Boots" on KZread. She's in South America now. I've invited her here. But not sure if Medellin on her map! Sorry so long!!!

I'm suprised they didnt take it away. A single ticket on a motorcycle in which the police take it away (they can under any circumstance) it mey end up costing 1.5M or more.

Driving in Colombia is ok if you can wrap your mind around the crazy traffic in some cities.. I've driven thru most of the country and I find the roads tolerable. The police I find nice.. police traffic stops in Colombia are way less scary than being in the USA (from a black mans perspective). This video shows scenes from Cartagena and I would agree if you live in any of the stratos 5 or 6 areas of that city you could get by without a car more easily since taxis are cheap and the most popular parts of the city are mostly located near each other. But if you plan on going beyond the tourist trail and live like a local..... get a car.... buy something not to fancy and go places. Colombia is a great country... most places along the coast are fine to travel to by car...

Hi, you guys seem super nice. I did want to ask why you so often stop mid sentence to say “yeah”. It’s on every video and multiple times. On this video it starts at the 1:00 minute mark and keep listening for about one minute. Anyway, If you didn’t grow up in Bogota, don’t start at an older age. The skills you need for that type of insane non-organized driving are off the charts. Keep these excellent videos coming. Many blessings to you.

What if I wanted to buy a brand new car with 0 miles like a Mercedes Benz in Colombia? Is that even a possibility or should I import it from the United States. I was planning on moving to Santa Marta or somewhere on the beach in that location. I think I would go nuts without the freedom of a car. Any feedback would be appreciated.

I can't hear the question in your mind you are answering each time you say "yeah." Great videos and I have subscribed. But just say 'um' um ... that is normal enough, but when you say "yeah" it triggers in the mind of the listening the need SEARCH FOR A QUESTION that you are answering. There was never a question preceding your answer "yeah." Ummm um just means you're thinking .... i do this all the time in my own videos .... but yeah means yes, and so i scan what was just said for a question.

Funny dudes) If you love driving and traveling, so you should have a car!!! If you don't have money for the car go and find a job!!! Here en Colombia there are mostly mountain road, better own a big engine vehicle, more than 3.5l block or having turbine/compressor engine. The bigger vehicle you own the more respect on the road you have, that's the rule everythere over the planet. Leave a bigger space on the right hand side while turning for bikes. And be a respectful and peaceful for the others always!
