I used an Anytime Mailbox address for my most recent business which is a Delaware LLC and I tried to open a business bank account with Bank of America. They were unable to do so because their system wouldn't accept the Anytime Mailbox address as a physical address. I was able to open a business account with TD Bank and with Chase but I don't think I will use Anytime Mailbox again.

Check your lease or rental agreement for your apartment -- sometimes it will state that you can't use the address for a business. Sometimes it just lists certain things you can't do (like have clients in person). Sometimes it has nothing about a business, so you're fine. Also in some cities/towns you can't get a business license for a biz running from home without a home occupation permit (and sometimes the landlord has to sign off on it).

Do the virtual address needs to be in the same city where your business license is? Thank you

Thank you for all the info….I went thru a few diff companies and there is only one virtual business address in my city ..it’s a bit expensive..if I get one in a diff city 25 minutes away..do I have to apply for my dba in that city or can I still apply for a dba in the city where I live? Thanks

DBAs are usually either filed with the County or the State (depends on where you live). So if it is in the same county, then it will be the same. Anyway, dbas are attached to your address as your "location" so if you are going to use that address, then it would be the location for your dba.

Hi, I currently run 2 business in Minnesota that is home based, but I am also planning on getting my LLC in the next few months for each businesses. However, would getting an virtual address be something that I need since I get my packages/mail shipped to my home? Also, I am hearing a lot of people saying it’s bad to use your house address for when filling out the LLC because it’s public information but if that’s the case what should I use then? I am also planning on the future to get my business license,EIN, business credit & business bank account.

For packages, sometimes virtual addresses don't work because they either don't accept packages or they charge a premium - you'd need to check to make sure it would work. About 1/2 of my clients who work from home use their home address -- it depends on your comfort level. If you use a registered agent company as your RA, some of them like www.northwestregisteredagent.com/ will let you use their address for your LLC filing business location.

does using a rental propertys address as a buisness address work ? does using a personal address as buisness address make that part of the buisness and open up liability problems? in louisiana they dont allow po boxs, so i dont have alot of options.

So generally you can use a rental property address, yes. In some places you need the landlord's permission, but I don't know about Louisiana (the law there is different than other states, on many things). So a bank will want the actual location address for the business owners, fyi. But for the mailing address you can try anytimemailbox.com and you can get a phone number from google voice

Is there a service where you get a virtual address but they also scan your mail for you (as in, it's also a virtual mail box address)? All the services I'm finding charge an arm and a leg to scan and email you mail if you get a virtual address -- I'm kinda being forced to get both a virtual address and a virtual mailbox. I'm working on launching a website and not expecting much of anything - just need to be legal in the state of CA. Thanks in advance!

I am soo glad I found YOU!! I am going crazy because I feel STUCK at this point. So, I have a Registered Agent and their address is on The Articles of Organization and my Statement of Information. I also have my EIN under the same address as the RA. However, my business license is my Actual address. I feel like I have made a mistake and have too many addresses. Then, I've been told I need a virtual address for this, so, I'm confused and frustrated now. What should I do?

That may work out okay -- the business license/tax certificate/permits are more of a local requirement based on the physical location of the business, and what the business does there. The EIN / state filings are more about contact info for the business. Part of this depends on how you want to receive business mail. Some RAs don't let you use their address for general mail but for some you can set that up.

Typically banks want a real physical address. I mean they are fine with also having mail go somewhere else, but they want the physical address

Hi, so I’m trying to have 2 businesses, I just created an LLC for one of my businesses but they told me I couldn’t create another business under the same physical address and P.O. Boxes are not acceptable. They also said I have to live at these addresses if it’s a home address. So how do I go about creating my second business if I don’t have a address? For my second business I have things I need mailed to me or returned if needed so I believe virtual won’t work?

Hm is the problem that you can't have two business names on one virtual mailbox, with the mailbox company? That may be a postal regulation. But anyway, California does not care if you have multiple LLCs using the same address when you file the Articles of Organization to form them. If you don't want to get a second mailbox or use your home address, you could use a Registered Agent like www.northwestregisteredagent.com/

That's a good question. If you are pitching VC / Angel investors, you may want a co-working place, especially one with other startups similar to yours (similar industries). Then you have a conference room to use to meet investors and they may host networking events and such.

I just currently get a virtual address after i watch your video. I have had a P.O box before but it closes because of financial problems i cannot afford it. I spoke to the IRS yesterday and i cannot use a virtual address but they allow my P.O box before. Can i use a virtual address for sales tax in California? Thank you,

For sales tax, CA will want a street / location address. They look up the address and see if it is a virtual mailbox or not

Depends if you need your home address to be as private as possible. You could just use that for everything if you are okay with it being public, or you can get a virtual address to put on public places (website, etc.).

Hello, first thank you for sharing such helpful information. I just filed my LLC and I have a couple of questions. I listed my RA address as my principal address; however, my work will be online from my home. 1. I am unsure what address to put for my EIN application. I want the home business tax advantages. 2. I also want to receive mail and credit offers, but I don’t want to list my home address on any of my online business. 3. You can use an RA/virtual address for all of your mailing addresses. There are a few places where you may need to list a real street address but mostly you can just use a mailing address.

I'm trying to start a sole proprietorship for an online business in California in a county that requires a business license. I want to keep my home address private, if I got a virtual address would that be allowed?

It really depends on the county -- in some places they just are happy to get their money and in others they look up the address and even do an in-person visit (!). Sometimes I just try it to see. Also could try a virtual office that has a location.

Hm well typically a business license is location-based (and sometimes will also require a permit as part of it) so they want you to use your actual location address. Some people use a virtual mailbox and it goes through, but many places check whether the address is "real" or virtual.

I'm in California. So can I get away with using virtual address to file my LLC? I'm not clear on that. I am referring to the physical address portion on the LLC application.

Well CA wants the physical address to be the actual location of the business (they state "The principal office in California is where copies of the organizational documents, operating agreement, financial and other business records must be kept."). Now I am sure many people get away with using a virtual address because CA is not currently checking the addresses, as long as it is not obvious like a PO Box, but that is not what CA states they want.

Hi, I am planning on starting an online baby clothes boutique and I am planning to have a registered agent. I live in Idaho but will be moving around for the next couple of years so I was thinking of having my LLC registered in Delaware but had a few questions. 1. Does the business address need to be what my registered agent address is? 2. If the business address doesn't need to be the same as the registered agent address then do you think I should still get a registered agent or no? 3. If I do get my LLC in a different state and use a registered agent, does the return address on my website where the customers can return items need to be the same address as the registered agent or could I do a P.O. box that isnt in the state of my LLC if that makes sense? So for example if i live in idaho but have my llc in delaware would the return address on my website need to be a delaware address or could i get a P.O. box in idaho where customers could return things should they need to?

No, the business address can be totally different. But if you are required to get a registered agent, it isn't a choice (as an individual you can be the LLC's registered agent, but your street address is public). The return mail address on your shipping can be totally different state/address.

@@ElizabethPW Sorry, I have one more question. So if I set up my LLC in Deleware but will be working out of Idaho for a year before moving to Georgia then do I need to set up a foreign LLC in Idaho and then another foreign LLC in Georgia when I move there?

Yes usually you need to register the llc in your state as a “foreign llc”

Yes, LLCs can be created and owned by someone who does not live in the U.S. There are a few complexities since you don't have a personal U.S. tax id number, but it is possible.
