My husband is a contractor and he said all block pocket needs to cast. He said it's cheating the work and with the excessive rain fall it can cause flooding. He has to correct so many buildings because of not fulling the block pocket. Even if it's a wall, do not tell the laborer to cheat the work, they should be filled.

I will ask do your husband understand load transfer. The roof is weight it self (all that make up the roof) the steel per core is weight. That's like saying I will build a 2 storey house and come out the foundation with 6 inch blocks (that's is madness). Flooding is due to pour drainage.

Yes I think everyone should be cast the building cannot be too strong but it can be too weak to carry additional weight if you decide to add another floor in the future. That's just my opinion because that's what I demand done on my site.

This is a earth quake area, its best to fill all the pockets

They are so much factors to consider such as the soil bearing load, how many stories etc but where the vertical rebar is place can be fill load bearing can be every 2ft non load bearing 32 inches. Yes to much steel and concrete can cause the structure to fail. The science of forces are a real

some countries only fill every other pocket but the blocks are made stronger than the average blocks in jamaica

Ismash! a fool coop is different from a house hence I believe all block pockets should casted though I'm NOT a contractor! regardless! if its stone or compacted earth it moves and you'll need the concrete to hold the blocks together!!

I’m curious as to why in jamaica the sewer pipes have to be placed in the concrete walls and decking? It would make more sense to just creat a wet wall with all the bathrooms above each other and a separate wet wall by the kitchen. If you run the pipes outside the walls you then closed w them off from view with duroc or other cement board. This way if you develop a leak the pipes can be accessed easily. With the pipes in the wall , a leak could send moisture to the stetwhis gets corroded and destroy the concrete.

Back in the day it used to be outside on the walls,there are houses where you can see the sewer pipes running on the sides of walls. The builders have to go by what is on the drawing and this is where things fall apart,not all Draftsmen are real Draftsmen and this goes for Architects. Most of our present practitioners in building don't know much about our new building codes. Example we place steel every 16 inches so every block has steel running through it,this is only needed if you are building below ground or a strong room of reinforced concrete. Someone pointed out that you can place vertical steel up 36 inches apart,true but then you need horizontal steel to distribute the load across the wall evenly. Just to back up Ismash about block pockets,all external walls pockets should be filled with a 2500 to 3000 psi concrete. For internal or partition walls the pockets with steel should be filled,these walls would already be strengthened with columns every 10 feet.

I agree with you, I think it's based on the application or the project in general.. not every situation will need all pockets to be filled

no not all have to be but it's ideal.

yes every block hole should be cast because it makes the house stronger. I not, the walls well start to crack after a while

If control joints are provided in the wall and the foundation is properly done eliminating settlement problems then there should be no cracking even if all block pockets are not cast

It makes sense to fill all the pockets since your concrete wall is the only one you’ll get. There is no drywall or secondary insulation.

@@Ismash4real in most construction in North America for instance, fiberglass or other types of insulation materials would be placed between the drywall and the outer wall , wether it be brick or what’re they use on the facade.

The insulation not only serve as protection from cold but keep out the heat in the summer and maintain the cooling that you get from the AC.

@@Ismash4real there is not a need for installation, I was just saying that if some of your block pockets are left infill , a hole can be created in your wall that’s the only thing between you and the elements or outside of you house. In houses that have insulation , you have something else to get pass even if the outer wall is damaged.

No not all needs to be filled... Overkill just cost you the person building. If its a single storey with a zinc roof why do you need all pockets filled? Easy to identify people you get formal training
