Dr. Pinesett is right. I didn’t get into medical school until I decided to stop making plan B’s and C’s, and started to give plan A my undivided attention.

For me, I am getting a BSN to keep my options open. I haven't decided whether I want to go to CRNA or NP school, PA school, or Med school. So I am in a position where there is no plan A to focus in on, rather I am on a journey of discovering which path in medicine is right for me. And bonus, nursing as a profession is exciting in itself. I may decide to stay a nurse, who knows!

Personally i have always known i want to go to med school but since i was 16 i worked in healthcare. As a nurse now i can save more money, learn better patient care, know more medical information that someone who is in biochem will not know.

My niece just started med school. She was an icu nurse for 3 yrs and she had saved closed to 200k for the 3 yrs she worked. At least she could cut down med sch expenses in half. She took the pre med classes while worth’s a nurse so not bad. And she only 25 yrs old. BTW, nurses in NY make 6 figures

I got invited for medical school interviews in my third year of nursing however I didn't make it through the interview. How can I present myself as the best nursing undergrad during these interviews. Could you please do a video on how a nursing student should approach and answer interview questions with their experience.

Currently 23 and in community college. The plan was to submit my applications for nursing programs this year, but I’ve decided that it would be best to commit to pre-med. I don’t want to grow old thinking “what if” and realized it would be best to take more time completing pre-reqs. Long and difficult road ahead but I’m sure I’ll make it!

A fool-proof way to pay off student loans as a nurse is traveling nursing. A travel nurse makes well over $100k/year (take home). I paid off my loans in a year and received a scholarship for my masters. I believe if I continue to work as a travel nurse and save while taking my pre-Med courses then I should be able to at the least cover my Med school tuition-without including miscellaneous cost of course.

Right? At the very least you can pay for med school and just take out loans for living. Less than $200K you can pay off easily as a nurse.

I wish I could focus on getting into medical school, but I dont count on the financial or moral support of my parents right now and it would be best for me get a BSN and still be involved in the medical field. I would later apply to medical school. After saving to take more classes. Which i really need since undergrad gpa is very low

As someone who got a my undergrad degree in Biology (pre-med) I wish I had of done nursing first. Although, I did really well in my undergrad years, the medical school process is expensive. Nursing would have given me the finances to help pursue it fully. Now I’m in my last semester of my accelerated nursing program. So it all depends your life situation ultimately.

As a non traditional I was thinking about this so much. Why the heck don’t more pre mess get a nursing degree first? Then you can actually work, save money for life and school, get paid for clinical hours, network, shadow and see how healthcare works. It’s a win win.

My reasoning behind going into nursing before med school is kind of 2 parts. Part 1 would be to find out if a medical field is truly right for me, yes I’ve been in a medical related field working as a QMAP out of a memory care facility and I have enjoyed that more than anything else but going in for an ASN to a BSN I feel would give me a more in depth point of view as to whether or not I’d want to make that leap. Part 2 would be that if I did decide that yep this is exactly what I want out of life let me at it, I feel that having practical experience working as a nurse for a year or two before entering medical school would give me better knowledge of the practical applications of medical procedures and help me through my internship and residency by making me less afraid to perform say intubation on a patient or a biopsy because I’d already have that practical experience and would ultimately help me become a better doctor in practice rather than just theory. As far as paying for it all I don’t worry too much because I have resources as a veteran than other people don’t such as my GI bill as well as specific programs that will full on pay for medical school as long as I serve my internship and residency back in the Army as a commissioned officer.

Can’t wait to see that video Dr. Pinesett! Been a nurse (RN) for 6 years. And was a CNA for 5 years before that. Also had the dream of being a Physician since way before nursing. Currently doing pre-reqs for med school. Plan on applying next year.

I really don’t agree with his opinion on the financial aspect of becoming a nurse. I think the reality is that some or most people in their early 20’s when they come out with a BSN have the ability to live with their parents. If this is an option for you then with a nursing salary, especially if you work overtime and hustle, you can save a lot of money for medical school. I think by the time you become a doctor you’re already in your late 20’s early 30’s and you want to get a house, have kids, etc. plus he failed to mention the insane amount of taxes that doctors pay on their salary, plus malpractice insurance. If you can work your butt off for a couple of years as a nurse and save at least half of what it costs to do med school then it will set you up a lot better financially with all the added expenses of when you get out of residency. Interest is killer, and 5% or 6% on 300,000 is a LOT of money.

great content! I would just like to add that students need to do a LOT of research on the specific requirements of each med school. Sciences that are offered in your BSN will sometimes NOT count towards the pre reqs. To be on the safe side make a plan on which school you specifically want to apply and call ahead to see what they look for as far as pre reqs are concerned.

I’m working on a BSN before making the jump to medschool because I wanted to learn more hands on and help people along the way

Finally i wait for this topic so long. Even though i really enjoy this channel but many things in this video i can not be agree with. First i think it is completely make sense do BSN as pre med for medical school there are a way more pros than cons. Maybe iam biased because iam RN but on opposite to opinion in this video i dont see a reason to do BS or BA and spend 4 years of your life and money only that to get in med school! When you can combine these two things and have both requirement for med school and degree that in case of something ( its life you never know) make you able to stand on your feet??? Also i cant understand why having back plan set up you for failure ? You can focus on your primary goal , put all your efforts for it but in the same time be wise and dont burn bridges !!! I am currently a pre-nursing major but I’ve been really interested in medical school. However, I really want to start working when I graduate college so I can start a stable income, going the traditional med school route by majoring in biology etc. won’t give me a job right away if I change my mind. I’m just unsure about my decisions, so I’m thinking about getting my BSN and if I find myself not satisfied with my nursing degree, I can always do a 1 year pre-med school program and try applying to med school! It’s just hard knowing what you want at this time and I hope I can figure things out as I get older!

I really loved this video. The reason why I'm going to nursing school is because of financial reasons. I go to a community college as a pre-nursing student because not only it's cheaper, but I'm very low-income so after I go back to uni, I can do patient care while being able to financially support myself. What about a direct entry Masters in Nursing for change of career?...It's fast some accelerated programs are a year etc. I am currently in a direct entry MSN program with the intent to apply to medical school.

Can you make a video for those want to change careers and go down the path of an MD? I work in adtech so I don't have any prereqs taken, but I want to study to be a DO. However, how do I set myself up where I can still afford my mortgage and pursue my passion? Any insight will be helpful!

I dont recommend using nursing as an GPA enrichment, GPA is loaded differently, 80 is a C etc, but Pinsett I disagree, Nursing is a great foundation on learning how demanding medical school can be, it also builds on medical knowledge and enriches critical thinking skills needed in medical school. Cost benefit analysis is on point though!

I am an NP. Nursing never challenged me. It is the easiest thing I ever did...

I didn't do so well my first time around in college, right now though I am doing really well in an AAS nursing program and plan on supplementing with elective Organic Chem, Algebra, and other classes in conjunction with an online BSN with as many lab sciences as I can get. I had to live as an adult and will work as a nurse to fix my credit and stabilize my student loan situation for a year. I have a unique situation where I don't have to pay rent and have minimal bills. I want to be a doctor with all of my being. I messed up my credit pretty bad making bad life choices and need to fix all of that before medical school loans are even a thing. Would you say this plan is solid, what would you recommend fixing?

how about people who have another bachelors degree in other degree such as engineering, what can they do to go to med school, what to do in community college to get into medical school.

I feel like this video is a bit discouraging to nurses, nursing is not a mediocre profession and many nurses get accepted to medical school. I believe he’s looking at this from a very one sided perspective. Keep the faith and make sure you have all your academic requirements, great MCAT scores and all other requirements and you’ll be good.

Rayanna Williams that’s not what I said. What I said was that it doesn’t make sense to do nursing with the intent to work before medical school. If you want to go to Med school then go as quickly as you can. I think nursing is a great a career, as I said in the video. It’s not a stepping stone degree to become a doctor. That is the point.

Hey Dr. Andre, great video. I have 2 years of nursing experience and I am currently getting my masters in nursing but have recently decided that I wanted to pursue medical school instead. My plan is to finish my masters and apply after. The problem I am having is that my masters cost a lot of money and i'll be in major debt afterwards. Assuming that I get into a medical school, I foresee that my debt will be an upwards of 350-400k (masters+med school+living). What do you think would be the right move?

Ok I see what you are saying about accumulating debit. But I need medical experience, plus was in the military so my undergraduate (BSN) was technically free. Also I’m collecting my disability Rating from the VA and currently a flight nurse and just passed my MCAT with a (524)100%. So I guess my question is; Do you have an answer for people out there like me, who plan on studying Medicine and are debit free working as nurses who aspire to become MD/DO?

Dr p, great video and sound tips. Ive been starting and adjusting insulin dosages for thousands of patients for the past 20 years. I have achieved many awards in my field, my letters of rec are from chief medical directors who know me well, i have a 3.4 gpa with 4.0 in my past 24 credits of upper level sciences, I am the director of nutrition in 2 different hospitals and work 18 hours a day in order to make what I made in the year 2000 working just one job, not a director, but in a different state. I’ve applied 5 times to my state school but cannot get an interview. We have a family of 4 and are resistant to move out of state thus the reason why I haven’t applied out of state. While my self esteem has been crushed I still keep trying. Mcat is 500 4th attempt. Please advise

I KNOW I want to do anesthesia. The problem is deciding if I want to be a CRNA, or Anesthesiologist MD. How do I weigh the good and the bad and make a decision......I've been researching these things for MONTHS now and I'm still just as lost as when I first started. I just need a little guidance. it just depends if you’re willing to do the extra year plus residency for an anesthesiologist. A CRNA is 7 years, and they make 150k+ while an anesthesiologist is 8 years with 4 years residency- 300k+. They perform the same exact tasks, and CRNAS are also independent from doctors

Does the nursing school have to be accredited? I’m an RN with a well over 3.0 GPA but the school wasn’t accredited. Would that be an issue?

I am in my second year of my BSN and now am thinking I want to go into medicine. Such a hard decision on if I should finish my degree or switch to a science degree so I have more time to take pre requistites and do more to obtain a spot in medical school.

Sorry why being in the bachelor of nursing might not be the best option to boost that GPA? Cuz I’m currently a nursing student and my GPA is 3 point something can’t remember and I still got 2 more yrs to go so there’s still a chance to boos it somewhat close to 3.5 or .7 and if I take a few extra courses after that I think i can get the required GPA

Question: I am currently working full time to pay off my car and credit card debt while going to school part time. I have about 2 more years to pay off my car completely but working full time is putting a strain on my studying/classes. I feel like this video is for me .. I worked in children/ adult psych for 12 yrs , tele/ICU step down for 4 yrs and now in ICU/CCU as critical care nurse for a year and half .. since moving to ICU I developed a burning urge to go to medical school.. watching you makes me luv anesthesia more but when I watch Dr Antonio Webb I feel pulled towards orthopedic surgery.. my kids are older now I’m about to start some premed courses lacking in my college degree .. tell us more why u luv more y u luv anesthesia pls .. thx

you have to have taken the prerequisites for the med school you're applying to & you have to take the MCAT

there are a few medical schools here in the U.S that don’t require prerequisites, but the majority do

You are forgoting to add that pre-reqs exspire and they might retake pre-reqs.
