Should You Convert Your 883 to a 1200 or Big Bore 1250/1275?

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

If you have a Sportster 883 you might be considering converting it to a Sportster 1200, but there are other options out there that would would allow you to gain more power for the same price. There is no cheaper horsepower gain on the market than a big bore kit for your Sportster 883 or Sportster 1200. Harley performance doesn't have to break the bank and the aftermarket has some great options. If you're thinking about a 1200 conversion kit for your Iron 883 a 1275 kit may be just the solution you're after.

I live in Australia and bought my 1997 883 Sporty from a friend back in 2009, for a good price and rode it around for a few years until I got it set up how I like as far as suspension etc. I bought the 1275 kit from Hammer Performance, along with a more capable clutch, the oil pump drive gear they make, the CNC machined ignition rotor they produce, and I put in the 2007 upgraded oil pump as well. I used the standard heads and the 2-1 exhaust that came on the bike when I purchased it. I had already had an S&S air cleaner setup installed, which was a massive improvement over the factory one. I can’t speak highly enough about Hammer Performance! They are outstanding people to deal with! The difference in the performance of my Sporty is AWESOME! Not only does the upgrade give me more power, I get much better mileage than I had. The guys at HP say this is due to the squish band producing a more efficient burn, which makes sense, but it’s way better than I expected. I now have a bike that is better balanced, so; smoother, but has bags more torque and power throughout the rev range that’s more than enough for what I want. It cost me just over $1500 (AUD), which means I haven’t spent more on the bike in total than I can reasonably recoup if I ever want to sell it. Which I don’t think will ever be the case. Hammer Performance is the BEST!

@@GixxerFoo Thanks, man. Yeah and I just completed the 500 mile break-in, and then opened it up a bit. Far more power than I was actually expecting, tons of torque and it's crazy over 3500rpm. This one has the stock heads, but they did head work, new valves and springs, Andrews N4 cams (I think these are medium grind, labeled as "street/drag" 2000-6000rpm"), carb re-jetted of course, big sucker air filter, and fairly open slip on pipes.

The main reason i bought my 2016 iron was because of the color compared to all the other sportsters . I put 500 break in miles on her , then called hammer and spoke with Arron for an hour on the phone . Placed an order for 1275 big bore kit and bought hammer Preformance air intake as well . While I was waiting for their kit my mechanic had my 883 heads ported here locally in CT. And I also bought a set of Andrews cams. Got everything put together and put 500 miles on it for the break in ,They sent me a map for my power vision From hammer performance. And I absolutely love the bike. I think another option, that is worthy of discussion, is using a buell xb12 engine, you can get them reasonably cheap, about 1k for a good motor, tear it down, you have the jugs, the pistons, the heads, the cams, the lifters, you get the crank and rods ( the buell bottom end is significantly stronger than the sportster engines bottom end) ,, you do have to get the original sportster case machined to accept the buell bottom end, ( its reasonable, lots of shops are familiar with the conversion) , I think you also have to use some of the primary pieces from the buell engine as well,, but for the total cost, if your handy with a wrench, and have worked on these engines, it's easy to do I think. For well under the price of some of these kits, you can build a 100hp, 85ft lb engine, that revs happily to 7k, without destroying the bottom end. With some more money, if it's in your budget, for about 700 bucks, you can get the 110hp big bore kit for the buell, use it on your sportster build, and you can have a 110hp monster, and for close to the same cost as some of these kits are that include the heads and everything. On a side note, even staying with the sportster spacific kits, the bottom ends will never be as capable, as the buell bottom end. I forgot to mention also, that with the buell engine, you also get the upgraded, and stronger oil pump, and the drive gear ( the buell one is an excellent piece, many write ups on doing a sporty to buell oil pump conversion) ,, for the price for a cheap buell engine, you get tons of upgrades, that would cost you so much, if you just sourced the parts individually. Just a thought, but this is the other ( and in my opinion, the better option) for building a reliable, sleeper sporty. Great video as always/ fist bump

I have done the Hammer 1275 but went all out with cams and porting on heads. It will turn your sporty into a monster! I am right at the 120HP mark and you do loose some down low drivability but people are amazed at how hard it pulls away. I have blown some of the big twins away light to light. Need to build my RK up next and wake that 103 up. Depending on how hard you are on the bike after the Hammer kit goes in belt life is decreased a lot but I still prefer it over the chain for ease of maintence.

I notice that in the description there is a link to a video about maybe choosing a big twin instead of a Sporty.... I have both an '06 XL1200R that is now 'Hammered' out to 1250, and a '10 model Streetbob that is now 113" with reworked CVO top end that makes 130+bhp and 120+ torque. The Sporty is easier around town and for rides of ,maybe, under 150 miles - it also handle twisties much better due to the overall smaller size of the bike. I am 5'9" and a bit over-weight and find that if I am going further, such as hundreds or thousands of miles that the Dyna is the bike as it is more comfortable and handles speed better especially when loaded with camping gear etc. One trick all Sporty owners should look into is the bike's gearing.... especially if it is/was an 883. The primary gearing is so low as to make the engine revs very high at freeway speeds - and more vibes along with it. If you get a Hammer Performance 1250 or 1275 kit then the vibes lessen as the pistons leave the engine more balanced than the H-D stuff - look on Hammer's site and they explain it very well. Back to gearing - look on 883sportster.com I think it is and you can find bigger trans pulleys that sort the gearing out - I use a 32 tooth pulley on my 1200/1250 conversion and it leaves the bike cruising at over 90mph @ 4k rpm. It is not worth putting bigger cams in an 883 or twelve hundred (especially and 883/1200 conversion) without getting the heads ported as they don't flow enough for even the standard 883 or 1200's cams respectively. If you want power, go for the big twin but remember to replace the engine mounts as standard ones are rubbish - go to Big Bear Performance or Chopper Hauss ones though as all the others are just 'a Band Aid on an open wound' so to speak. For sheer performance the big twin is better, for fun it is the Sporty. As always folks, 'if you have to ask the prices Sir, then you cannot afford it' applies to most things ......

As the owner of a stock carbureted 1200, I don't understand how anybody would not be happy with that. It easily keeps up with traffic, cruises on the freeway at 80 mph, and will top out at close to 120 mph. That's more than you can legally use on the street, and I don't see many people taking their Sportsters to the track. Sportsters and all pre M8 Harleys are about the riding experience, the feel and sound, not power. If you want power, get a 600cc or 1000cc crotch rocket. Or a Hayabusa. Get the right tool for the job to begin with. Unlike car engines, you can't get aftermarket parts for motorcycle engines to beef up the engine from the ground up to handle more power. A 1200 engine has a lower redline than an 883, because it has bigger heavier pistons. But an 883 is geared for the 883 engine, which turns faster. When you put a 1200 kit on it, you are still stuck with that 883 gearing. Putting a 1250 or 1275 kit on either an 883 or 1200 doesn't seem like a good idea. The more power an engine makes, the more stress it puts on it's parts (I've been an amateur drag racer for 45 years) Just what is all that power going to do to the bottom end and transmission? I have seen a lot of car engines destroyed by increasing the power of an otherwise stock engine with a turbocharger, supercharger, or nitrous. The stock parts couldn't handle it and broke, in some cases scattering the engine all over the track.

883's and 1200's share the same crank, literally the same part number, and they've done so every model year since 1995. Which means the motors are not balanced differently between an 883 and 1200 despite the piston weight difference. Instead, they balance the crank for a piston weight in between the two. Well, the forged pistons in a 1275 kit are actually about halfway in between the 883 and 1200 piston weight. So the balance actually comes out better.

It depends where you live, some states are really strict about emissions. You can use a hammer kit on the street and still have a very reliable bike if you're able to tune it to their specs. But I would not run their kits at the EPA fuel ratio, my Sportster stock ran like crap starving for fuel and it was hot. You can use the Harley Stage IV and be completely emissions legal, but it cost a lot more and you get major drop in performance compared to Hammer.

It was enough to leave a very nice white layer of its rare beauty on everything. The last time I remember it "snowing" (calling that past "snow" event would've been a huge exaggeration had it been like the most recent event February 22, 2019) it was a bit of visible white icy stuff up on the nearby hills. You won't regret it cause the 883 are different than 1200 heads and the heads will hold it back a bit. No issues with reliability, Hammer makes a solid kit and just a bolt on 1275 kit with cams isn't even gonna be close pushing the boundries of a stock Sportster bottom end.

heres the big question,, my stock 2003 883 is getting 45 mpgs,,,,how much worse will the mpgs get if the motor is punched out to 1275?

It depends how you ride it, you get more power at any given throttle position by using less throttle. Mileage usually goes down as a result of enjoying the power, but conservatively ridden it should get about the same.

If you upgrade the 883 to a 1200 or 1250 or 1275, should you think about changing the transmission gears? I checked the specs for the 2022 883 and 1200 and noticed that the 883 has taller gears. So now I'm thinking to get the most of it, widening the gear span to find a sweet spot might be a good idea. Any thoughts on that?

So, here's just my thoughts on it; honestly, if you're changing that much on a bike - the transmission gears, cylinders, pistons, cams, everything - then its just better to get a touring bike with all the bigger stuff already on it.

@@Cory_Burning_RubberI’m upgrading with an over bore to 1200 with head job. It’s not for touring. It’s my around town fun machine. For touring and highway miles I’ve got a big softail.

I have a front primary pulley that I have sitting in my garage that's one tooth down for my 1200. I'm trying to figure out how to get the stupid thing off. It didn't budge with a 5 foot breaker bar, I guess I have to borrow someones 50 gallon air compressor and 1/5" impact.

Brother had '89 883 never a problem, '92 put Harley 1200 kit done by Harley shop, yes it had more power......couldn't keep a stator working and back tire went away fast.....it had sit for a long time, my next brother had it fixed as a 1200........stator Now I've had 2 883 both carb, never a problem......we have lots of curves and I never could see doing anything for more power......both got 10k+ on back tire BTW they (I think its S&S) make a 883-1400

That's really strange not being able to keep a stator in it, did you ever find out exactly why? Those 883's have different gearing in the primary which is awesome on the curvy roads. Mine has the taller gearing which is great on the interstate but you notice its downfalls around town.

@@GixxerFoo Last time it was x-harley shop mechanic..........him and everybody "that knows" says it couldn't be the 1200 kit.......but nobody got any better ideas......thats because everything has been changed, except taking it back to 883.....last time was a restoration and included heads, jugs, rings, pistons, stator, lights, wires,.......all electrical......2 days riding(easy riding like a new bike) and it was dead, checked stator.....bad I think its simply the '89 883 case wasn't meant to have a 1200 sitting on it.

Late model 1200 heads (04 and up) are perfect, you can use the 883 heads with the right pistons and still be in the 85 horse range. Not bad if you want a very vanilla conversion.
