Should You Buy the JR Pass? Japan Transport Guide

In October 2023, the JR Pass had a massive 70% price increase, with the 7-day Japan Rail Pass now setting tourists back 50,000 yen. So the question is: how much travel do you need to do to make the JR Pass worth it? To answer this, we cover four different sample itineraries from short trips between Tokyo and Kyoto to detailed multi-city plans.

It really depends on how you travel, whether you’ve been to Japan before perhaps and even if you consider the rail journey as exciting and part of the trip. We are often on the first Shinkansen of the day leaving a place which often means we’re at the destination before many things are open. We also travel light (carry on only) so luggage isn’t a big deal. Most of the Shinkansen lines offer fantastic views so I love it. I’ve no desire to stay in the bigger cities of Japan anymore so a full day/night in a smaller area is often enough (can always return).

I sincerely hope no one adopts a "worth it" itinerary just to make use of the JR Pass. There are far better passes out there that will allow you to explore places in your own pace & save money at the same time, like the JR-West All Area Pass that lets you travel between Kyoto, Osaka, Hiroshima, Fukuoka, Kanazawa, Toyama and more for 7 days and it only costs 26,000 yen (more or less half the price of the JR Pass!).

Next time you go to Japan, please try riding the JR Oito Line from Itoigawa to Minami-Otari, the JR Yamada Line from Morioka to Miyako, and the JR Geibi Line from Niimi to Bingo-Ochiai, as the scenery is beautiful. Last time I was in Japan, I pretty much used the train every day, and travelled as far as Nagasaki (via Kumamoto) and also rode the ferry to Miyajima which the JR pass covers. I first went to Okinawa, then came back to Tokyo and I always plan to travel from Tokyo to somewhere around Himeji on the first day. Next time I visit Japan, I'm thinking of going north to Sapporo from Tokyo, so I hope to be able to get my money's worth out of it.

Individual JR fares have risen very little, and sometimes not at all. I had a 21 day pass in April this year, from Takamatsu to Morioka, stopping at Osaka, Yokohama, Nikko, Nagano, Matsumoto while heading north, and from Morioka to Narita on the last day. The pass was good value for this itinerary then, but not anymore. I doubt if I'll buy one on my next trip to Japan.

One thing you didn't mention is, that the JR Pass is NOT valid as is on the Nozomi and Mizuho trains ( the most frequent and fastest ones ) and you need to buy extra tickets for these trains even with the JR Pass. For example Tokyo to Kyoto/Shin-Osaka is 4960¥ on top of the JR Pass on Nozomi train.

Thanks for making this video. Very helpful! I have watched several of your videos already. I wonder if you could help us decide which rail tickets/pass to buy: We would be visiting Japan in early April 2024: Staying in Tokyo for several days then off to Arima just for a day trip then continue on to Osaka for two nights then to Kyoto for two nights and finally back to Tokyo for 4 more days. I would greatly appreciate any advice and suggestions you could give me. Thanks in advance.

Thank you for your kind words! We are delighted to hear that you find the videos helpful. For your Japan trip in early April 2024, we recommend considering the Japan Rail Pass for convenient and cost-effective travel. Given your itinerary with stops in Tokyo, Arima, Osaka, Kyoto, and back to Tokyo, the JR Pass will cover Shinkansen (bullet trains) between these cities, providing flexibility and savings. Make sure to activate the pass before your journey begins. Enjoy your travels in Japan! If you have more specific questions about the pass or any other aspects of your trip, feel free to ask. Safe travels!

I was still so very young, there was almost no English existing in Japan. I’ve watched so many videos on Japan including yours, I especially love the one on ONSEN. Speaking of ONSEN, do you know any ONSEN in Arima, Osaka or Kyoto that would allow tattoo? I have a small one on my back hip. Again thanks so so much for everything!

That's so exciting! It'll be interesting to see how much has changed since the 80s. For onsen in Kyoto, two that are tattoo-friendly include Funaoka Onsen and Goko-yu Onsen. If the tattoo is small enough, other onsen might also allow you to cover it with a "seal" or plaster. Regarding the JR Pass, it can be more convenient to travel with the pass, especially if you're making a lot of trips on JR train lines but if you're purely looking for the cheapest option, purchasing single tickets for the shinkansen between Tokyo and Osaka and then just using a rechargeable transport card like Suica for travel within cities is also an option. Hope your trip goes well! 😊

Hi there, ur video is just what I was looking for. I fly to Japan on the 30.9.24 with my wife and 2 girls aged 12 and 4. I land at Tokyo and then take another flight to Osaka within 2 hours. I spend 2 days in Osaka visiting the universal studios and maybe some sight seeing. I probably would like to visit Kyoto, keeping Osaka as my base still and stay an extra day in Osaka. I then travel to Tokyo where I'll most likely spend a good week at least given my girls are not that much into temples and sight seeing given their young ages. I'll most likely be travelling around Tokyo doing the Disney land and sea, mario kart rides and some tourist shopping. Finally will head to the airport around the 11.10.24 to head back home to Sydney. Which pass do u think I'll do best buying??or do I even need a pass?? Thanks a lot😊

With so much to explore in Japan, it's almost too rushed to visit more than 2 (or even just 1!) major cities within a week unless you intended to do 1-/2-day excursions to utilize the JR Pass effectively. But even if that's the case, it's probably a better deal to take overnight bus to cover these many cities and save on hotel costs.

some of the regional passes have also lost their value. Not only have the prices increased but they have also removed flexibility from some of them. The JR East passes used to be any 6 or 7 days (depending on the particular one) within a 14 day period which meant you can take your time at each of the places you visited. It also meant you do some sight seeing then have a a week of skiing and then do more sight seeing (or use the shinkansen to get back to Tokyo). Now they've changed them to 6 consecutive days means to get the value out of it you have to be constantly on the move between towns and cities travelling everyday

Are you basing individual tickets on the fastest Shinkansen, such as Nozomi on the Tokaido/Sanyo lines? If so the travel times would work. I am under the understanding the new Pass allows access to Nozomi, but you pay extra for it. Based on that fact, unless my plans are to travel frequently I don’t think the Pass is worth it any more as a cost saver. If all I want is convenience and the ability to book seats online early I might pay.

You are both gonna be drained of energy from all the walking, transporting your luggage, and not giving your bodies time to rest. Trust me. I've been there 7 times and learned after my first trip. It's especially not worth it with the insane price hikes of all the JR passes. It would be cheaper for you both to fly from Haneda to Osaka.

A 14-day JR Pass could be a cost-effective option for your Japan trip itinerary. It can cover long-distance travel between cities like Osaka, Kyoto, Mt. Fuji, Tokyo, and Nagano. As for "free attractions" with the JR Pass, it typically covers JR-operated trains, buses, and even some ferries. You can use it to access iconic attractions like the Miyajima Island in Hiroshima or Nikko. The Japan Rail Pass (JR Pass) can be a cost-effective option for travelers covering multiple cities, especially if you plan to use the Shinkansen (bullet train) for long-distance travel. You can visit the website : www.japan-rail-pass.com Hope this helps!

It's not worth it to do all that traveling. The pass just isn't worth it anymore. If you follow this video's guide, you're just gonna be drained from the constant travel, lugging around your luggage, checking in and out of hotels and AirBnB's and constantly getting lost. Instead, buy plane tickets to one city from your country. Explore around there, go to specialty shops, do your research and eat at amazing restaurants, pre-book shinkansen from ticket shops outside of the train station for discounts to different cities and towns, and then fly out of a different airport back to your country. You'll save a lot of money this way and your trip will be WAYYYYY more enjoyable.

Renting a car is great if you're travelling outside the major cities to countryside areas. If you're just hiring a car to travel between Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto etc. though, it's more convenient and cost-effective to fly or catch the shinkansen.

I am going to Japan in November from 1.11 until 17.11.24. So far I am looking at regional passes and domestic flight options but I really want to take JR green pass to experience trains as this will be my first trip to Japan. My itinerary is more or less complete (95% lol ) Tokyo 4 days Fuji 1day Nagano 1day Kanazawa 2 days Takayama 1 day Kyoto 2 days Hiroshima 1 day Osaka 1 day Between Osaka and Sapporo I would love to take a night sunrise express train (Osaka to Tokyo) then from Tokyo to Sapporo indulge myself in Gran Class 🚝 and from Sapporo ( 2 days) fly back to Tokyo and to Europe then. If I am not buying a JR pass I might change it from 14-15.11 to go to Okinawa with plane and from Okinawa to Sapporo then. I am torn between taking an green pass 7 days Jr pass taking 14 days of normal JR pass just to avoid hustle or just buying a regional passes which I saw they don’t include green cars. What do you think? Regards from Germany 😊

Hello there! Your Japan itinerary sounds fantastic! Considering your travel plans, a 7-day JR Green Pass might be a great fit, especially if you plan to take the Sunrise Express and indulge in Gran Class. It offers a convenient and comfortable way to explore multiple regions. Alternatively, regional passes could work well for specific areas. Keep in mind the JR Green Pass adds a touch of luxury to your train journeys. Whichever option you choose, enjoy your trip to Japan in November! Safe travels! 😊🗾🚅

@@tokyocheapo I just consider taking 7days green JR pass from Nagano on as I will use IC suica and other cards until I reach Nagano (big fan of slow train rides hah). One question though, probably is for the best to buy JR pass on official JR website as you can reserve the seats asap and you don’t have much hassle down the road while in Japan? Also how much in advance should I buy a JR pass if I am flying to Japan on 1.10.24? In July perhaps:) Thanks again for your feedback!

Hello! Considering the scenic route sounds like a great plan! Yes, buying the JR Pass from the official JR website allows early seat reservations, minimizing hassle. For a trip starting on October 1st, purchasing the JR Pass in July should provide ample time for processing. Safe travels and enjoy your journey! 😊🚄✈️ Here's a quick guide for you: tokyocheapo.com/travel/transport/the-complete-guide-to-japans-regional-rail-passes/

not worth it anymore, there are plenty of other options to save money; from buses, local trains, flights to ferries (plus specific discount for short trips like Nikko, Hakone, etc etc). Tokyo to Fukuoka to make your JR pass worth.... so you spend basically everyday travelling non stop, going at a really fast pace and moving your suitcase around. What about a video showcasing all different alternatives to JR pass? because let's face it, it's dead.

It spends. But I would say most traveller's won't find it worthwhile. My 7 day trip ... still in Japan... include tokyo, kyoto, osaka, himeji. I traveled by shinkansen and still not able to use 50000 yen. So you will need to figure out hoq to use 50000 yen in 7 days. Also not every shinkanesn line accept the pass. Since most japanese speak little English, getting on the right train is a challenge.

Just ditch the pass, they are forcing you to waste time looking out at the window on the the Shinkansen. Going all the way to Kyushu from Tokyo just to cover the distance and make myself feel worth it is the last thing that I would do. Apparently domestic flight is way better. No doubt their trains are cool but no way Im gonna spend half a day in there.
