Do you have to use it on a flat surface so the air can flow? Pretty much can I use this on a carpet?

I would not recommend this product. It's not deep enough, it only holds about 2 inches of water so you can't submerge your whole foot and if you fill it up to far it overflow and gets water all over the floor. Here's the kicker, when I was measuring the water depth I used a metal tape measure, as I was standing next to the product the floor and my feet were wet from the unit overflowing, as I stuck the end of the tape measure into the water I got an electrical shock. I used an electrical multimeter to test if there was any electrical current between the water in the unit and the water on the floor and low and behold I got 8 volts as I stuck the test probe deeper in the water the voltage increased to 10 volts. The unit is not GFI protected and being that I got shocked I don't think it's even insulated.
