I'm surprised you didn't talk about the Ocean Cleanup! I don't think you need to go into spoilers to talk about it, but that was what sold me on this game. Something totally unique to Coral Island. Also, you can tell this game was made with love for the OG farming sims (Harvest Moon, Story of Seasons, etc) and new sims like Stardew Valley.

This is is still SO incomplete and I’m baffled it’s basked as a full release. I love it so much and love the direction it’s going in but it’s not a full game… The best game in this genera I’ve played all year is by far my time at Sandrock. I highly recommend it as there’s such a great story, real cutscene, real combat, actual dates you can choose, etc etc etc.

Right?! Like not to be rude but Sandrock feels like a completely original game, even if it takes elements from other cozy games. I've played it more than 200 hours and I cannot stop. It's so good, rewarding and the characters are so charming

Agree 100 percent. They released a game still in EA but jacked up the price and called it "full release." I would have loved it if Coral Island had focused on ecology both above and below sea, and focused more on improving the environment, etc., to give it a more unique feel. But I know I like "farming" games that focus heavily on nonfarming elements. Not everyone is like me. (I have yet to fire up Sandrock since the final release because I know I will spend tons of hours with it. Really looking forward to it, though). An example of an incomplete game that at least completed the main story was MTAP (which I love). I also loved Wylde Flowers, though I think the story (which is amazing) is too linear, so playthrough followed by playthrough might not be as much fun.

I’m truly getting old. When I came across this game.. I instantly thought of harvest moon not stardew.. stardew was cool and all but I felt like it was a pixel version of harvest moon. I like coral island a lot. I’ve always wanted harvest moon to upgrade the game and characters a bit and they never really evolved past the cute anime vibe. Coral island gives me that mature farming sim vibe while still being cute. I’m overjoyed.❤

lol same. I never think of stardew since I only played a little of it but used to play the gba and playstation versions of harvest moon til morning when i was a kid. ahh memories lol and yes harvest moon, even story of seasons never meaningfully evolved. coral island and my time at sandrock are pretty good right now

I freaking LOVE this game. I also found the bug hunting difficult, but I think they did it on purpose. I have traditionally played RPG's, so one thing I noticed with cozy gaming(so far, I only switched to the cozier side this year) is the lack of progression. Coral Island has the feeling of progress I'm used to. Tasks that take a long time and seem difficult early on feel much easier as you level and upgrade equipment. I like it, and it has definitely played a role in maintaining my interest.

The difficulty in catching is definitely harder than the open beta. I've noticed the amount of bugs out is also lower than the open beta. I'm grateful for the new game + option so I can start with a bunch of money to get rolling through Year 1 a bit faster. I'm close to upgrading the net and fishing pole in the first season. It will definitely be a grind to get to the upgrades in 1.0.

in my opinion, Stardew Valley simply set the standard for cozy farming sims- so it's completely fair to measure every single game that comes along with similar gameplay to it. The gameplay value & price really is god tier for Stardew, I backed Coral Island on kickstarter & have been waiting for the 1.0 release and FINALLY it's here! Great review Stormie!

I mean. Stardew Valley is just another Harvest Moon/Story of Seasons, because it took everything from the series. So you should probably compare every farming sim to harvest moon and not Stardew. :D

There’s a fine line between “started” and “set the standard”, while I don’t discount that harvest moon came around first, you also can’t deny what Stardew has done for farm sim games. But if you disagree to each their own.

I think the game might still be incomplete, another YT Josh's Gaming Garden went over it as well and he showed that one storyline stops to a point and has WIP on it, brings up a good point that if the game is going to be released, you should be able to finish everything you can start. I still think the game looks wonderful, and Im sure it plays fine, but def seems like it might not of been ready. Im kind of tired of games being pushed out and then Day 1 patches, which is very normal now but even so, feels the game wasnt ready if it only took the public not even a day before you need to release a patch. This falls in similar territory as theres just parts of the game that arent finished.

yep, as someone above commented, I'm old. I remember when developers didn't have the option to patch games once you purchased them so they didn't put out half done games (and you just lived with the bugs). TBH I much prefer that time. I play the Sims and I haven't played it in almost a year because I'm tried of having an update every month which necessitates redoing all my mods, hoping it didn't bug out something that already worked.

nice video thank you for making the review. I know finding time is tough when your small time but a small transition between the sections you talked about would have made the video flow so much better (nit picky but just something to consider)

I've been playing this game since Early Access last year and honestly even the Early Access blew me away. There's so many QoL features in it that really sold it to me as being one of my FAVE farming games. Plus, the entire ocean thing is INCREDIBLE and so different. (Also, no one is judging you for Mark. He looks/acts so similar to my husband. PLUS, he loves animals. Solid 10/10 XD)

I bought the game when it came out in Early Access and didn’t really touch it because it was so early in development. But I’ve been playing it pretty much nonstop since yesterday! It really does feel like Stardew Valley and also Animal Crossing to a degree and I’m absolutely loving it! In fact I should probably slow down so I don’t get burnt out 😅 (Also, I also totally picked Mark haha. And I tend to lean towards Shane in SV as well! Though I’ve been going for Harvey more often lately!)

I was interested in it but I don't think I will be buying it ever now because it seems downright disrespectful claiming it's 1.0 and complete when it categorically is not. Regardless of whether the content is going to be added later, they should not have released it as 1.0 missing features that are genuinely needed for a game to be complete like.. the ability to complete the game perhaps?

The best farming simulator game that I've played since harvest moon back to nature on PS1. I really love the music, map design, character design, the culture, feature, and I like how they make all npc looks dynamic. But i believe it is still needs more updates for future to make this game better.

Thanks for this review! I am leaning towards getting it now. I was really disappointed in Fae Farm but loving Sun Haven. I may go for this next when I get bored with Sun Haven

I'd say wait. I purchased at "full release" thinking "full release" meant just that. It doesn't. The game is incomplete, but they raised the price on "full" release. Romance and marriage aren't properly implemented. The main story isn't complete. I played it like crazy & finally stopped because I thought, "Why? I can't see the end." I just found it very misleading. The artwork is gorgeous. In fact,l I'd have loved it if the island itself used the same artstyle as the characters. It's that beautiful. Characters don't have a lot of personality. They feel more like tropes to me (ducks and runs for cover). It's mainly just surface level. I know a lot of players don't care about any of that. It's really an individual call. There is still a ton of stuff to do, so I know the game will keep a lot of players happy until all the promises are finally kept. Yes, I am hard on games when judging them. I have been burned by EA games in the past & so avoid them. So imagine my surprise when I learned the "full release" really isn't. I don't care whether it was developers or publishers who made the decision. The decision was still made.

I played it this morning on Xbox Gamepass and it felt very laggy. I’m not sure if it’s supposed to work that way but I hope they fix it because I was liking what I played.

yeah i feel you, i feel like the sound was kinda off too idk unless they did it like that on purpose but the sounds weren’t soundin imo lol

I’m a huge Stardew fan, so I’m digging this game. There’s a lot of bugs though on Xbox. Some of the areas in the map aren’t loading properly, like some of the words that you see on the buildings are pixelated and so is the ground. The music is buggy too. Hopefully they get it fixed soon.

I enjoy the game... however, it crashes a lot...and I mean A LOT! It's tough because you can only save by going to bed and if the game crashes before you go to sleep you will need to start that day all of again...very painful.

Thank you stormie. I should of come to your review video first. The other ones my god they felt like someone giving their two cents and the spoilers. You deserve to be the first video that comes up when searching for a review. My only criticism is that maybe talk about the game play a bit more dont just assume that saying its like stardew valley ppl will get it. Otherwise 9 outta 10 thanks again

but with this game u can disable combat right? unless u attack first? i hate combat in sdv. keeps me from playing the game. i wish i hadnt bought it

Was looking forward but there's some game breaking bugs on PS5 so it's a no for me at least until they fix those bugs.

I've played an in game week so far and it is too much like Stardew for my tastes. I'm giving it a few in game seasons to see if there is any variety but so far the diving and bug catching are enough of a novelty to make it stand out.

This has Stardew Valley written all over it, but... This is much better looking, since I'm not a big fan of overly pixelated games, and has bit more going for it in terms of activities and content. And of all things, they have community center that actually functions. But its also not without downsides, which are mostly QoL stuff, like planting crops while holding down a button and the like. Dragging map is a pain, and if you turn off vsync, it's even bigger pain, hopefully devs will address the issue. Overall, judging by all those videos I've seen so far, there's a lot to look forward to in this game, since I just started.

the video sound is low but the content in superb.... 💌

Would you recommend this game to those who like farming sims but hate the whole cyber dating aspect of it?

From what I can tell the romance system is nearly identical to Stardew, so you shouldn’t miss out on anything if you don’t want to focus on the romance!

What's even crazier is that the Devs still aren't done with the game because there's going to be a boat-load of new stuff next year. I have been playing this game off and on for almost a year now. I am updating the game since they just came out with a patch to fix things for the PC version (I know they did the same thing for the XBOX and PS versions too). I'll be taking a break to wait for one of the future updates when it comes to Romance (you can guess what I am talking about). I am torn between 2 bachelors, one is Theo, but the other I won't mention yet because spoilers. Okay I have to ask, how did you do so well in that one Spring race with the sack? The NPCs just blaze past me and my time is more than doubled by the time I get back. Maybe it's because my computer isn't the best. I can run the game fine, but when it comes to races, I do struggle. One little nickpick I do have with the game is the fact that hats cover your hair. I hope that feature gets fixed because I love hats (I just love seeing my MC's hair more and if I picking between the two, I pick my hair). But yeah this game is amazing and that price is even better when you compare it to the likes of Fae Farm and Triple A farming games.

I agree with you I think game over game, coral island has a lot more to offer than fae farm as far as price point going. As far as the potato sack mini game, I’m not sure why I was good at it lol I have played a lot of rhythm games and games with QTEs so I guess I was just used to it 😭😭🫶🏻

For me visuals are very important in these low key text-based games. Stardew valley was honestly too ugly for me to get into and I gave up after a day or two. I’ve been reeeeallly enjoying coral island!

The game is amazing. The only feat I hate was fishing. Even in endgame, you get trash and flyers and trash... and carpal tunnel. So un-fun.

I really hate the stamina systems in farming games. I get what they try to achieve but I just do not like them. And the argument that later down the line you can bypass them with certain systems (e.g. coffee in stardew valley) moreso proves my point that they are just unnecessary. (At least for me as I just do like those limitations.) In stardew there is a mod that basically disabled the stamina bar and increased my fun with the game by a mile... Sadly something like that does not exist for coral island and as much as I adore the artstyle and everything in the game... The stamina bar just ruins it for me... Maybe I'll get it later with official mod support or an infinite stamina setting.

It is broken on Xbox, so wait till they patch it.

Buggy and an incomplete storyline. I'm going to pass on this until it's more polished. I honestly don't understand why they released it in this state.. it's happening more and more with video games and I'm kind of sick of it. I might pick it up later when it's actually finished. But I'm not going to get it before then.

I love this game so much and have been playing since alpha! I've seen a lot of people online call this a star dew Vally rip off but I've personally gotten so much joy out of this game, I feel like there's souch more to it than that and at times I've even felt more joy from this game than any previous game I've played in this genera. I'm curious what everyone else thinks though is this just a star dew Vally rip of too you or is there more to it than that?

I don’t think it’s a ripoff but I think that people are feeling that due to some of the mechanics.. 1. Produce box outside the house 2. Combat in the mines 3. Gifts, etc to build relationships As well as the overall story having the same vibe with Pufferfish and JojaMart being this corporation trying to destroy the land in someway. To me I don’t feel it’s a ripoff, but I think those are some of the factors that are drawing people to that conclusion!

I think it feels very similar to Stardew because a lot of it is the same. The blacksmith comes up to the house to give you furnace, upgrade your tools at blacksmith, just some things I noticed. The mines are very similar to Stardew. Idk. The characters, I think, are a lot deeper but I’ve only played a little so far

I could see how people would think it’s a ripoff, because yeah, a lot of it is pretty similar - or nearly identical- to Stardew, but personally it’s all the things I loved about Stardew! The mechanics are the same, yes, but the rest of the world is very different and full of life and I hope people give it a chance

People tend to forget that before Stardew Valley, Harvest Moon (or Story of Seasons) existed. In Harvest Moon you also give gifts to villagers, mines are pretty similar except the combat mechanic (there isn't one)

You mention fishing and how it distinguishes itself. Okay but can you mention that it’s 0/10 in terms of fun? You just tap or hold X without any thought or care. The more difficult the fish.m, you just have to tap and hold X for a longer time. 2004 animal crossing has better fishing than this. It’s 2023, how is this fishing so bad and boring and poorly made. Please don’t just skip over this in the review.

So far I really like how detailed the characters are, but other than that, the game play is kinda boring :( I just feel like they took the play style and timing of stardew. I’ve only played it for a bit so I’m hoping it gets better!

This game on PS5 is absolutely horrible. It is heavy on quests. The music is terrible, characters missing can’t finish quests. It has tons of issues one being honest. I have 260.00 headphones I can’t even use them. I wanted to love it so bad

Hell yes you should buy this game. It is awesome. THIS game is worth 50 bucks, easy. This is WAY WAY better than Stardew Valley.

You act like it's all that great, but the game is OLDER than Coral and still feels more unfinished than Coral Island does. And there's ZERO point to most of the things you craft to make things. The creator for Coral put in WAY more love, care and attention to detail in the game than Stardew Valley's creator did. I bought Stardew for my phone, and thank god because $6 is all I'll spend on a goodish game with alright graphics. I do have a love for Stardew.....but it's no where new Coral. If I could get Coral Island on my phone, that would be even better 😏🤍😂

I love farming sims but this one feels not cozy to me and I don't know why. I know everyone is enthusiastic about the graphics but meh. I haven't played a lot maybe 6 hours or so but no. Not loving it.
