    Just treat her well and she will be kind to you. Don't skimp on oil changes! That's one of the best investments you can do, once you have taken possession. And that is not limited to the engine. If you have the ZF6HP26 (As in a TDV8) it says "filled for life", which is complete and utter bullshit, like clutches doesn't wear on those boxes and leave contaminations in the oil. I replaced my oil at 300000 km (a few months after I bought the car) and it was night and day how the shifting improved. Also transfer box and front and rear diffs. But the most important is the engine oil. I never exceed 15000 km and only use Ford approved oil. Ford WSS-M2C913-B, or better: Last letter B, C or D is the magic spell.

    I love my Rangie L322 TDV8 3.6 with a passion. Forget the dodgy electronics (just rip it all out and put a Pioneer Apple Carplay system in) and you have a fantastic car/truck for less than hatchback money. Mine's been remapped and gets 27 mpg around town and 35 on the motorway if I'm doing 85 or less. The comfortable high driving position with excellent visibility makes this car a must for anyone that loves luxury. And don't worry about the repair bills as the engine is pretty well bullet proof if serviced regularly.

    Nice informative video. I've had my 2002 L322 TD6 for 10 years now, in Latvia (imported from France coincidentally) and it is a "holiday" car which does around 5000 miles a year tops. Bought it with 230,000km on the clock and no service history. Ive had the wheel arch corrosion issue which has been dealt with and since then it's had repeated "Frown" anti rust treatment (injected into panels as well) and annual steam cleaning everywhere down below, seems to have defeated rust issues pretty well. Spot on about the gearbox, mine went halfway across Poland (!) and I had a reconditioned one fitted at around 3000 Euros. And spot on about the turbo, that went as well but I had probably been clogging it hard (I do an annual round trip of 2400 miles across Europe for the ski season.) Now I take it more steady, and I average 30mpg over the 2400 miles. One thing I would add is the air suspension bags... they tend to leak after a while because shit builds up in the folds which gradually grinds away at the fabric. Had to change both mine at the front. I've also had hoses go, and the wiper motor replaced, so it's almost identical to the issues you mentioned. Had new discs all round, new calipers and new handbrake assembly, but that's probably largely because it's stood for months at a time so they corrode.Had a new fuel pump as well. I agree 100% with all your comments, these cars can be bought quite cheap but you can't just bank the bargain and drive smugly away , you defo need to allow a contingency for any unexpected big jobs like gearbox , driveshaft, turbo etc and stay on top of the maintenance without cutting corners. It's just a case of going into it with eyes open.If I buy another (for the UK) it will be the 3.6 or 4.4 TDV8. Many non original parts can be found on Ebay etc, and in the UK it's easier to find independent mechanics who know their way around a RR (in Latvia I'm at the mercy of the main dealer!) II swap to winter tyres in the ski season and this car is unstoppable in the snow, and the HDC has saved my nerves several times on slippery descents. Before this, years ago I had a 2-door classic; these are fabulous cars and I absolutely love them.

    Had a used 3.6 TDV8 for five years. Intercooler hose was burst when I bought it but the problem wasn't apparent during the test drive (and the hole was hidden from view). It was only when zooming home on the German autobahn that it threw up an error and went into limp home mode. Luckily the hose is inexpensive (by RR standards) and easy to fix. It burst again around three years later so maybe a silicone hose would have been better. My EGR valves also failed but I had to have them replaced by the main dealer as there are few indy LR specialists here in Germany and the main dealers won't delete them. Other replacements include TPMS module (twice), PAS fluid radiator, transfer box motor and rear park sensor loom. Despite this I still loved driving it and now own a 4.4 which is even better.

    I'm just wondering what is so dreaded regarding the diesels? They are rock solid. One caveat and that is when the TDV8 is installed in the L320 (Range Rover Sport). Then the turbos are not getting enough cooling, which may result in bad news. And for that car, since it is not a unibody, like the L322, but built on a frame, it means body off. My TDV8 has 376359 km on the odometer (last fillup) doesn't consume a drop of oil with no blow-by whatsoever. Yes, they are expensive when the shit hit the fan and you can't swing a wrench yourself. I've replaced the alternator twice in less than five years, and it's a whole days work. You may also have stuck actuators for the variable geometry turbos, but they are easy to get going, when you know where to poke. And as long as you drive the car and don't let it sit for six months, it's not a problem.

    It's strange that the french should be foot-draggers implementing DPF. I bought a brand new Peugeot 406 2.2 HDi FAP in 2001, and the FAP part is the french nomenclature for particulate filter. And it was not possible to unselect the FAP when ordering it with that engine. Being one of the first diesels with particulate filter it wasn't much fun. Although it would regenerate, the lifespan was about 120 thousand kilometers, and then it was €1100 for a new one. And then it had a cam belt with cam drive sprockets that had pure conical fittings to the camshafts without any key! And they could very well come loose, like the poor punter that I sold the car to, got to experience...

    Just had mine serviced: cracked drivers side inlet manifold(350£ part and labour to replace, injector copper seals( 10£ for 8 copper seals and 150£ labour without engine off ),thermostat replaced replaced (30£ part and 120£ labour) and other small parts almost 1k £. I did check the intakes when were of and surprised to see quite clean so does the egr because maintenance freak changing oil every 10k. After this repair mpg improved from 18 to 25 so that's mega for a V8. All in all if you take care of all the problems at the time should not be any problems for a long time. The car is extremely comfortable is only used on long journeys ,never used it in town. One more thing i only use Ravenol FO oil 5w30 A5 norm it's extremely good even though i don't have a dpf from plant. Keep up the good work Ben !

    Hey Ben, another interesting vid as always. I love the L322 2010-12, a Jaguar engine, air suspension, love the looks, the way they drive. the short time that I've tried them out looking to purchase they're like riding around in your living room sofa. What I have heard there are two main issues, the timing chains and the air suspension. I found one that the dealer was replacing the water pump on it so I thought that while it was partially torn down I could make some kind of an agreement to have them put new timing chains in it as well. Never got back with me but the maintenance report was questionable anyhow. Stay safe and say hey to the Hobbit too.

  • @rhkavli

    @rhkavli

    4 жыл бұрын

    Interesting to hear what your issues with the air suspension is. In five years I've never had any problems with mine. (Knock on wood) But maybe I should elaborate a bit on that, because sure it has given me intermittent errors a couple of times. But it has never been the air suspension, per se that has been the problem, but rather communication errors between various on-board computers. Bringing a code reader, where you can save codes for further reference, if the faults should reoccur, and clear codes, is a good investment. Compared to having our holiday wrecked, garage expenses and all that crap, I can easily say that I've earned back the cost of the diag tool tenfold. Sometimes I hear about people converting the air suspension to coil springs, just in case. It almost makes me run to the toilet. There is a reason why this car is so damned good off road, and that is very much down to the the suspension system being able to emulate a live axle, which is impossible with coil springs together with wishbones. For the people who doesn't like air suspension and are afraid of the complexity, go buy a Toyota Land Cruiser. They have very good comfort, they are quite good off road, they are extremely simple to maintain, but they have no soul whatsoever.

    @@rhkavli I own both (2002 l322 3.0 TD6 and 2006 LC3 D4D) and they're both great in their own way. In 95% of situations the Land Cruiser matches the Range Rover in all-terrain capability if fitted with similar tyres. The RR has superior comfort and opulence, the Toyota has superior reliability, durability. and build quality. Both are great to drive, but the RR more so thanks to the ride, meanwhile the Toyota is built to last and even the little things like interior trim stay intact when on the RR they tend to split, crack and fall off. Hence they hold their value far better over time. Less niggling electrical faults too. But the RR has a unique distinctive presence which I prefer tothe Land Cruiser, although the SWB (LC3) version I have is the best looking of the line-up; I think Toyota lost their way a bit with the latest models, the bigger bodyshell gives the wheels an "under-shot" look which tends to give the vehicle to a bus-like appearance compared with the previous "wheel at each corner" look which is a must for a 4x4 in my book. Mitsubishi did the same with the Shogun, the 2nd generation bodyshape totally nailed it especially the SWB, and they never seemed to get the proportions quite right after that.

    @@justinneill5003 I have a friend in Belarus who's got a 2019 Land Cruiser with the 4.7l petrol engine He opted out of the diesel, because he thought it sounded like a tractor. :-) I haven't tested it off road, but riding in town across speed bumps and along nasty roads was no problem at all. The LC have much meatier tire walls than the RR (I have summer tires on 20" and winter tires on 19"), so that also helps to swallow bumps. But I have to eat my words regarding the air suspension. Two problems showed up almost at the same time. The pressure sensor on the compressor failed, so the compressor kept pumping until it overheated. Maybe the overpressure then lead to the front right strut started to leak, or it was a unrelated issue. I don't know, but after one unnecessary compressor change, one pressure sensor change and two new front struts arriving from Germany tomorrow, I can't say that the car haven't had its pneumatic issues. But it's a 13 year old car, so issues like these are bound to show up. I can surely say that I've replaced a lot of coil springs on cars that have both been younger and had less mileage. Salty roads, anyone? €700, including shipping, for two struts isn't that bad, and they are a lot easier to replace than coil springs.

  • @justinneill5003

    @@rhkavli You did well with those suspension struts, I think I paid twice that for mine but I was at the mercy of the Land Rover main dealership in Salzburg where I was stuck at the time! I believe n aid bag leak can lead to compressor failure because it is constantly working to restore the pressure. I take the same view as yourself, my RR is 2002 (19 years old, crumbs I only just realised that) so repairs of this kind are to be expected and spread over the 11 years of ownership are not so bad.
