Should you buy a SONY FX6, FX3 or FX30?

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Hi, Just a quick ramble on my 3 work cameras from the Sony cinema line, the fx6, fx3 & fx30. I loved the fx30 so much that I went all in but I should have done a little more homework. This is not a video of regret...I'm fully invested in the cinema line but there are things I wish I knew first.

    Thank you for this. I have just purchased the FX30 2 weeks ago. Im getting my head around it better than I thought I would due to watching your blogs. I opted for the Sigma 18-55 F2.8. So far so good the quality is great! Your right though there are so many good cheap lenses too! I love this camera. Thanks and I have subbed. 😊

    Welcome to the club and you made a great choice. The 18-55 will do very well in most situations but definitely make the sigma 16mm 1.4 your next purchase. It's feels kinda wide but it really will help in lowlight shooting with flexible iso. Also, Sirui have the sniper series coming soon which also look fantastic. Thank you for the sub 🙌🏾

I was so impressed with the fx30 that I dived in head first thinking Sony have a lot of choice in lenses like canon....boy I was wrong lol. I don't regret none of the Sony's but they honestly can't be compared to eachother as they really do bring different things to the table. Thanks for your kind comment and the inspiration to ramble 😅

    So glad I came across this video. I've been back and forth like a tennis ball over should I upgrade to the fx3 or fx30 im not worried about the crop because I already have an aps-c with my Sony a6400 but I film a lot of night games for football and want to start getting into shooting music videos and club promos which are always at night. The samples you showed in this video look no different than a night scene you would see in a movie now. Getting an attached light should to my rig should take care of any low light situation anyway.

  • @Altcine

    @Altcine

    8 ай бұрын

    Hey bro, glad you found it useful. Yeah the FX30 really is surprising. If there's a lot of dark areas in the lowlight scene just switch to flexible iso and keep dropping the iso until you see the blacks start to clean up. You can check the noise by having a large monitor or using the zoom feature. Do a few tests and you'll soon understand what's going on. Crop sensor really is amazing for the lens choice, so light and affordable too. I'm not saying the FX3 wouldn't give you more options for lowlight shooting...it definitely does but you can work with FX30 with very little issues.

    For fast and wide, the best option would probably be a Sigma 24-70 f2.8 DG HSM OS EF Paired with a MC-11 adaptor which works surprisingly very well on the FX6, I’ll be diving into it in depth in the near future to make a video and figure out the limits of such a setup for my self

    Great overview on these cameras. I always wanted a Sony camera but I already have my Blackmagic and Red cameras and they get the job done for now. For work I use the Sony FX9 and love the Cine EI profile. As far as all around versatility and if you're a one man operator how would you compare the FX30 vs the Blackmagic 6K Pro for a production?

  • @Altcine

    @Altcine

    8 ай бұрын

    Yes my brother, good to see comments from you. I agree, as a one man show Sony is amazing but if I'm being totally honest the 6kpro image looks a bit better. I still use manual focus and lenses in a lot of stuff so I wouldn't say the Sony is better than BM but when you have those shots that require a focus puller, mounting the camera where you'd need other equipment to control it etc then the Sony will practically do the job by itself. For corporate, events etc it's a clear winner over BM but for film...even with a small crew BM isn't a problem.

    @@Altcine definitely was sweating. This was after I had a memory card scare. Think it was from filming the rain, my best guess. It was stuck on a do you want to recover data on these cards? Not really but it wouldn’t let me back, so pressed yes, then it said “are you sure, it may affect other data already captured” so I pressed no and no and no and and no and it kept me on that screen. Couldn’t film couldn’t see playback. Even went totally grey at one point. Panicked and went and checked if the rushes were still there on a laptop (not my own because of the festival with little security on people walking in and stealing shit). The footage was still there thank god and no problem at all which is why I think the rain made the camera do something. Put those cards to the side (still scary wondering if you’ve picked the right ones - had no tape with me to mark them), reformatted the already formatted cards on the laptop and the camera eventually accepted them and we were good to go. About 25 mins of a lot of sweat. I’d been using duplicate recording but even that didn’t feel like enough of a fail safe.

    I can see how - if you are shooting interviews and can’t mask fluorescent lights and/or computer screens - or need to shoot computer screens - where that might come into play… I shoot - almost exclusively - video in studio where I have complete control of the (LED) lights… so I’m still thinking I would go with a full sensor (also, I only shoot with 24mm, 35mm and 50mm GM glass so I’d want to keep making use of that full sensor AND my subjects don’t move very fast so the “global shutter” is not needed.) I was thinking FX6 until I learned that it has no IBIS while FX3 does (and I don’t need NDs in studio) so I was think FX3 anyways… plus it has a little fan… The Alpha overheated 🥵 within minutes trying to shoot - Gerald Undone’s - 8K to 4K in a cool studio so I think Sony pushed the technology in the Alpha that really needed a heatsink or fan and FIXED it in the FX3

  • @Altcine

    Yeah the overheating issue is a nightmare so definitely glad for the fans in the cine line. It's good that you can control everything in a studio and the fx3 will definitely shine. The FX30 is a great camera- and - unless you really need to shoot in the absolute dark - produces a better image than the FX3 because of the downsampled 6K sensor (and even pushing to ISO 3200 the downsampling def decreases the noise...) Now if Sony would unlock a 6K RAW open gate HDMI output for external recorders the FX 30 would be by far the winner (but Sony will probably never do this...)
