I like that in the RF the rollbar is low enough, so that when you flip over and hang in the belts, the rollbar doesnt prevent your head from getting smashed by concrete like a potato. You wouldnt want to have a fighting chance in an accident in a miata would you.

I have an NB MX5 and not much has changed since then. The recipe works. Light, well-balanced, and it has an awesome transmission that makes for a good time behind the wheel. Like a lot of "car guys" I dismissed them until I drove one. Then I got it, it's all about the joy of driving, nothing more, nothing less. Nothing is better than zipping down a curvy road in the fall with the top down and the heater keeping the lower half of your body warm. The first time I did this, I realized why guys in old British roadsters wore gloves.

Miata fan here (owned 2 - NA and NC), so I really appreciate this one. As far as the antenna getting hit in the Car wash. Generally most people in the Miata community don't use automated car washes. Even when I lived in a apartment, I never used an automatic car wash. I used a coin-op sprayer. Miata base was $13.8K in 1989, that's about $33K inflation adjusted. Miata base in 2022 is about $28K. So the base car is LESS expensive today, than it was on introduction in 1989 when you take inflation into account. Finally, they aren't really that slow. 0-60 is under 6.0 Seconds (5.7-5.9 seconds, in C&D, MT, R&T). It's not a V8 killer, but it's not bad, and all Miatas feel even faster than they are.

When living in Canada on my NA I’d swap out all four alloy wheels for cheap steel wheels, each carrying a skinny, deep-lugged snow tire. Never did I get stuck. But even better, on a snowy road I could do perfect four-wheel drifts, just like a WRC car. The heater on my canvas-topped car was totally up to the job of keeping me warm. In the spring I’d replace my alloy wheels with performance tires, having spared them from salt and abrasion damage over the winter.

I bought a new one of these earlier this year (the RF variant cause it rains a lot here) and I'm absolutely in love with it. It will do anything you want it to do, surprising amount of space in the boot, amazing temperature control, it can be loud and quick when you want it to be but it'll also cruise quietly and not put a hole in your wallet for fuel. The sense of speed from sitting so low is insane. I've driven Ferraris and Lambos round tracks but the MX-5 is just as fun in a different way, very light and easy to change direction. Yes it doesn't have a screaming V8 / V10 but to me it sounds amazing when I put my foot down, even driving within the speed limit it manages to put a huge smile on my face.

Great Review. Loved it. Missed that there is an exterior button for the trunk, but it is hidden and above the license plate. The antenna is there because when the glass is down, it wouldn't get reception. The stock one is designed for the best FM reception. Seat heaters are awesome to use in a convertible when it is a bit cool, turn on the heat and the seat heaters and open the top. I use my RF as a daily driver all winter in snow country. Top stays up for months and then down most of the summer. Heated seats, heated side mirrors and heated windshield washer nozzles are useful. No heated wheel, however, the air vents next to your hands blow hot air on your hands within a few minutes.

My brother and I 'stole' it while she was on holiday, had the dull paintwork machine polished, the wheels refurbed and a lovely (but expensive) chocolate-coloured mohair soft top fitted. Finished off with a proper clean inside and in the engine bay, plus a service. It looked great! Mum was blown away and drove that little car until she was no longer strong enough to manoeuvre it (no PAS). I was very impressed when I drove it. Great review Mr CCN! I had a 1997 1.8 mk1, the last of the pop up headlight era and that little car was fantastic fun, super reliable and made a great sound with the full stainless system. I'd love a new one but I'll be waiting for the depreciation to do it's think before I get one! Cheers :)

When I bought my 1st of, now my 4th MX-5, I bought it for the fun of driving, nothing more than that. I found the car to be quite reliable and easy to maintain. The money saved will easily offset any costs of replacing the top whenever that starts deteriorating. My 3rd MX-5, had about 80Kmiles on it, no problems. I had to try a new color and those Terracotta Napa leather seats, so I went for the new 2023 MX-5 about 3 weeks ago and had to drive over 100 miles to a dealer that had the one I wanted. I wouldn't have done that for any other car. They put the new muffler on my old MX-5 and installed my Racing Beat muffler on the new MX-5 for me, the muffler I've had on all 3 of the previous MX-5's. A true Roadster is supposed to have a lot of wind noise, loud and rough riding. I've never been a Cadillac type guy. Still having fun at 78 yrs. old and still love driving, driving the last true Roadster under $100K.

Is the automatic as good as the manual, or almost as good? What is the actual practical difference in the experience? Why don't all MX-5 models come with automatic transmission? I'm 47 and looking to pass my test and get my first car. I just hate gear changing & want to get the automatic only licence. May I please garner your opinion, weighted with many years of priceless experience? Many thanks.

Hi - I can help here- I had a 2.0 Litre ND1 Automatic - my wife insisted on an automatic so she could drive the car. Long story short - I now own an ND2 2.0 Litre Manual. Let me tell you from experience and listen to the reviews when they say the manual is best - it is and if you can practice - it one of the easiest to drive. The car has a hill holder function that takes the stress out of manual gearbox driving. Persevere and get the manual would be my advice - but make sure you are competent and confident before taking the car on a public road.

  • @2688elmo

    Жыл бұрын

@@TDF2004 Mostly yes. It's my only car and as a single I make it work. Over time, the insignificant things do annoy me though. That includes interior storage space, ingress/egress because the door opening size is small, the doors themselves are very long, and the car being low can sometimes be tricky to get into. However, even bigger sports cars still have most of these issues, which is an inescapable part of sports car ownership. Ride comfort is great and stock ride height is actually really good and I've never scraped on anything in 2 years because the overhangs are short. Gearbox is an absolute peach to use. And reliability is amazing. Not a single thing has gone wrong in 2 years. Even consumables like brake pads, tires etc are all near new probably because the car is so light. Granted, I have 12,500kms (8000 miles) on it. If you plan to use one as a daily driver, it can be done. I even do solo trips to hardware stores and Ikea in mine and Miata can take things like flatpack chairs or oil heaters. Just be aware that the lack of storage space is genuinely annoying. I ignored that fact, but it's not a reason for me to get rid of mine purely based on that reason. My cars IG page is @ takuminuri

I own a 2008 Mazda MX-5 Grand Touring PRHT, 6-Sp manual, since I bought it brand new from the dealership, and it’s by far the best car I’ve ever owned. It’s been proven to be quite reliable because I have never had any problem with the engine and transmission, which are the most important parts of any car. I know that the NC type Miata that I own is the most maligned generation because it’s the biggest and heaviest one, and not that attractive to be quite honest, but it has advantages over the current ND generation. For one, my big Miata (relatively speaking) has more cargo space, has a more spacious interior, it has an actual glove box, real cup holders, the 12-V outlet is where it suppose to be at the center console, instead of at the firewall on the passenger side, and the steering wheel doesn’t feel numb like in the ND because it’s hydraulic powered. I also prefer the retractable hardtop in my car vs. the current one, because it doesn’t have those intrusive buttresses behind the cabin like in the ND; instead, the hardtop in my car completely gets stowed like in a regular canvas-type convertible, so I enjoy a complete 360 degrees view with the roof open. I’m happy with my old Miata, thank you very much - no need to get rid of it.

Hang on to it, people are now realising it was great car and that weight thing was not relevant as its hardly anything but I think it was the best engineered overall, I looked a buying the ND but the direct injection stopped me, instead I found 2 NCs 1 in soft top and 1 retractable both with less that 6k miles on as new condition and I bought both as they were less for two than 1 new ND was!!, Best decision I ever made, plus at 6ft there is more room in the NCs Also the ND are so similar underneath it seems they revised the NC rather than a new model just as they did with the NA and NB. I would sum it up as the ND is a slightly slimmed down and re bodied NC with a direct injection engine and less space inside and for luggage.

The "Does it still have the magic of the original?" question in the headline was not really addressed in the video. So, I will. I had an early (May 1989 manufacture)1990 model and drove it for 20 joyous and reliable years. Loved it! Now I have a 2019 GT-S model and I love it just as much! It, too, has been reliable and a joy to drive. In between these two, I had a BMW Z4. To me, the 2019 GT-S is the best of both worlds: it has all the fun and reliability of the 1990 MX-5 and the power and luxury of the Z4 (the 2.5 V6 engine produces just 4 HP more than the 2019 GT-S, while the Z$ weighs 600 pounds more). In fact, I have owned sports cars since 1970, and the 2019 GT-S is my favorite.

One unusual thing about the RF is I don't see any at the local MX-5 group. 30 vehicles in my smallish area with models from NA to the latest [mine] ND2 but not one RF. It is also rare for me to come across an RF with the top down. With both my old NC RTHT and ND2 soft-top, the top will be down when it is above 40 degrees and sunny and only be up when it is raining or above 105 degrees.

THANK YOU for adding some fresh insights about the MX-5. Nearly all YT reviewers of this car endlessly repeat the same points, often using the same words. Though the MX-5 has over 30 years of refinement, and is now faster than a Jaguar XK-E, reviewers who do not know the car carry on the “cute little sports car” cliché. The ND2 is far more than that. The engine is mounted behind the front axle to balance weight distribution and reduce the polar moment of inertia by centralizing the car’s mass. The alloy cam cover is gorgeous, a nod to the classic sports car tradition of making the engine nice to look at. Today most engines are covered with an ugly piece of plastic to reduce manufacturing cost. The electronically operated variable valve timing provides a linear progression of torque and horsepower through the entire rev range, superior to Honda’s VTEK as used in the S2000, which produces a weak low end, followed by a rush of power at high revs. (Still a great car.) In development since 2013, the SkyActiv direct-injection engine was designed to minimize carbon buildup via a large oil separator under the intake manifold on the side of the block. High-volatility cheaper engine oils exacerbate carbon buildup. Provided the ND2 owner uses Mazda-specified 0W-20 full synthetic oil and changes spark plugs at specified intervals, carbon buildup should not merit inspection until well past 100 thousand miles, and it can be cleaned. Since 2019, the MX-5 has used a dual-mass flywheel, usually found only in exotics, to protect the driveline from torque pulses and torsional vibrations. The result is smoother idling and gear changes. Its featherweight design is masterful and makes the car much easier to drive in stop and go traffic. Another little detail you never hear about. Owner tip: Ignore the sound system and use wireless noise-cancelling earbuds, working through your iPhone for music playback, nav instructions, and even phone calls. You don’t have to spend $40 thousand for a new MX-5. The base Sport model comes in well under $30 thousand with cheap financing available from Mazda, and it has everything you need. I know because I own one, a 2019 ND2. It’s my fourth MX-5. The MX-5 IS genuinely fast if you want it to be, super cheap to run, getting mid-30s on the highway, with inexpensive service and legendary reliability. And it holds its value - just try finding a used Miata. If you’re not over 5’11” and do not need a back seat, there are no downsides. It’s as close to perfection as a sports car gets.
