Should you buy an early Maserati GranTurismo? Today i'm driving a 2008 example with the 4.2 Ferrari derived V8 engine and ZF 6 speed gearbox. This is a car that i've always lusted after, however it was not quite what I was expecting...

Well Joel. Review was spot on. Well done. They charm at outset and you saw through the thin veneer. They don’t drive out this world , just ok. The review was very very accurate. The MC is a diff prospect. They are gorgeous, all the Gran Turismos.

I’ve had a Maserati Granturismo s 4.7 for over 2 years now. Absolutely love it, it’s looks and sounds amazing, never had any issues, every drive is special . Fantastic choice, fingers crossed you don’t have any issues.

How much did it cost to maintain while you had it?
@Heeect00rrr

Maintenance cost?
1. The 4.7 Sport was quite a big improvement over the original 4.2 for performance and sound 2. The sticky buttons - that's a fixable issue, and not all cars get it. 3. There is a third party company called AuCar who sell a replacement Sat Nav system custom fit for the GT - It's about £1000 but gives you a modern touch screen sat nav - changes the car completely.

Dude, my phone started randomly playing this video while it was closed. I thought something was going to explode from the inside the phone Thank goodness it was only the Maserati
I love the timeless design of this Maserati 🇮🇹👌 Glad I found your channel just subscribed
My dad has a Quattroporte 2007 Duoselect and besides some minor electronical issues it has been perfect! The transmission gives it that little bit extra to enjoy it when driving on country roads
Sounds incredible. What a beautifully designed car. Please keep this content coming! It is great to live vicariously through your driving😂😂
Very much enjoyed that. Great to have you back. 👍👍🤗
After driving a mazer, db9 and xkr - I bought a 2010 xkr - 500+ hp, lovely to drive and apart from the older but functional infotainment a lovely place to sit in. I have no regrets...

@@marklawrence2417 yeah but even your xkr 4.2 is flippin quick coz of that supercharger. Great car, although my dad has just had to pay a fairly large bill for a new front subframe due to corrosion 😢. Very poorly built subframe, especially compared to my Skoda Octavia of the same year lol 😂.
I think you're the only person who drives or reviews one of these that doesn't absolutely love the sound. It's the car's calling card for most. Great video all around!
Yes you should Buy one. I followed one up the M5 last friday in stop start traffic...my window was open ....absolute music to the ears 🎶
I’m loving my QPV and although similar to the GT, is a different proposition. Amazing cruiser, double glazed and electric seats in the rear. Practical car to swan around in with a Ferrari engine up front. Also read that the exhaust frequency of the Maserati Quattroporte is 333 HZ, which is a frequency level that supposedly stimulates the sexual arousal in women.
Thanks Joel, loved the video. Keep em coming M8. Cheers, John.
Superb content as ways Joel, keep up the great work!!
I would definitely buy one of these. I've always loved the Granturismo.
Like the review Joel, good direction for the channel. You’re a natural at it.
A very beautiful GT car. I love it. I would prefer this one over the onter ones that you mentioned. The style and the sound - just very nice.
YES! I had one of these before my current DB9.2 and I did enjoy it thoroughly.... I had it 5 years without any issues it was a 2012. Coincidentally, the one I had before the Maserati was the E63 M6... lol
I love my 2016 GT in the same color, i always drive in sport, info tech not good …sticky touch points really suck but its a 24/7 head turner and constant compliments EVERY time I drive it…sounds amazing as well!
Love your vids Joel…. Great to see you getting ‘back in the swing’. Would I buy one? Oh God yes…. What a beauty! On my list for sure.

Great video Joel 🙏👌
You need to try the later 4.7 version Joel. Mine also has the aftermarket infotainment. Both make the absolute WORLD of difference. Fancy a spin?
I have a 2013 and I love it. Exhaust is awesome and i love listening to it every drive. Looks fabulous and people do notice it. M3s want to race me and I've beaten them easily. The only con is the entertainment center with the out dated looks and tech. Plus the damn sticky buttons. But I didn't buy it for the tech so I'm good. Mite add apple car play next year. That will drastically update the interior and give the car a new feel.
Possibly a little bit critical of such a beautiful car, a head turner!. An Italian super car of the late 20th century. But still a good vid, and looking forward to the next one.
Mate really jealous that you've gotten to drive one of these. Would love to have a go one day especially the 4.7 S version.
The sound!!! What an amazing sound that car makes. I love the spec of that one, and if you want a stylish cruiser then surely it has to be up there. However if you're after something to make you smile around the bends then from your view it's obviously not the right car. Personally I'd be tempted purely for those seats and that sound.

Agree, it's awesome, just when you get up close and personal with it, it's a little dissapointing.
I have been seriously considering one of these. The straight line grunt was a concern and I think you have just confirmed my suspicions. I'd be looking at a 5.0 xkr instead
Interesting result. I have never been in one of these but a friend has a 2004 Quattroporte that feels like a rocket ship when he boots it. I've been in a few Ferraris and Lamborghinis and it's definitely not that fast but it seems like this one is going a bit slow from your description.
Never driven one, but would love a go in one. I think I might really like it, but choose the safer option with the 997 Porsche. That V8 Vantage would be great, but I’ve heard they break eveytime there’s a day in the month.
We have one and drive down to Rome for our summers. It’s a wonderful Grantourismo :)
I think you should get one ! Would be awesome
Great video again! It is a very handsome car. But getting a mechanic to work on it is a challenge here in New Jersey. OEM rotors are $500 each and it gets 13MPG.
Joel. It's a year after you uploaded this video. Yesterday, 18 Jan 2024 I test-drove a 2011 Grand Cabrio 4.7L S with 39000 miles on the clock. It was a short drive but my take is that this later version does look inside and out better than the earlier models and inside lots of improvements regarding buttons and controls. It was priced at £30k. It's quite a hard drive, and this particular car badly needed a deep clean. I didn't buy it, but could be tempted to buy my first Maserati but a later model maybe 2013 or 2014. Not sure if Cabrio or Tourismo.
Always loved these Joel, stunning, amazing sound and ridiculously cheap. Very intriguing, however as echoed by others, the fears of repairs and general fixes / righting wrongs on this can be ruinous! After all, was an 80k plus car new.
This guy is probably the only car KZreadr in the uk I can watch without cringing! So sick of Matt Watson trying (and failing miserably) to be funny; or Alex at car throttle’s awful Mike Brewer impersonation which makes me vomit!! This guy has his own factual style and it works really well!!
It's sounds so nice
4.7 with a tune and exhaust will change your mind!
Hey, a bit late to the party, but I have had similar problems with the sticky buttons on my Jag XK. It's not really all that expensive, you can get a pack of makeup removal wipes (either buy or steal some from the missus). I've had a couple of really badly affected buttons, but even those cleaned up nicely after 3-4 wipes. If the disgusting buttons are something you are bothered by, it's worth trying out before you take it to a professional.
“It is a big car” - I wish you were right!
You should NOT buy a Mase GT. It's too expensive, maintenance is so much, etc. Please leave them to the rest of us that don't care because they are truly a work of art.
I'm in love with this car ❤❤❤
Please do a £20k series where u explore other toy cars for £20k- stuff like 911 997, v8 vantage, M240i, Z4M etc!

Are you paying like
For £20k I would get a BMW F10 M5...for that price it would be a slightly higher mileage 2011/2012 example but a bit of fun at the weekends and you could probably use it as a daily driver too.
The sound the looks the price. That's the equation but the Vantage will almost certainly start to appreciate sooner and steeper, if the Mazer ever does and probably cheaper to own. And that's saying something.
This is the best car for a friend to buy
Joel, thank you for the video, I have also always fantasied about having a Maserati. Also heard about the unreliability and tacky interior. I think it’s going to be the BMW M6 instead.
It is beautiful, but no not a chance. The sticky buttons problem is heartbreaking.
I like if the headlights were updated the front end would look very modern
Joel, do you miss your E85 Z4?
You need to drive the 4.7 with the MC shift, totaly different kettle of fish. The sound from mine even on slow speed is fantastic, and the looks it receives even just plodding in a 30mph zone. Save a little more than 20k nd buy the 4.7. Porsches are everywhere .... how often do you see a GTS on UK roads ??
Love the looks of that car and I would be tempted as a weekend show car... but your problem, like mine, is that you now judge everything against the RR L322 and you always will. Yes these sports cars and super cars are exciting, fast and pretty to look at... but as a daily driver nothing beats the L322 for comfort and class. Put it another way, a 500 mile journey in that Maserati or your old L322...
I'm thinking of getting a Maserati Granturismo 4.7 MC-Shift S between the yrs 2013-2016. Anything above without the Ferrari engine doesn't interest me currently and not to keen of the front end of the younger year ones. Gorgeous car
Cheers mate
this car is my soul mate
The 4.7 with Cambiocorsa (F1) gearbox is the one to get!
It depends on what your taste is I once wanted a 6 series BMW but after hearing the horror stories of gasket leaks and oil leaks and constant engine problems I decided not to take the chance I did however get the Maserati I don't see it as a race car although it is not a slow car the look and the sound and the reliability is enough for me
@KayMac1
Жыл бұрын
Those problems you described on the 6 series were only really prevalent on the V8s 4.4 and 4.8. If you could settle with the slightly slower 3.0 630i it was a much more reliable block
Very underrated car
Can you do a older Bentley continental Gt same age to compare as thinking of buying one of these two
Try a late 5.0L XKR as a comparison.
First thing I’d do is check that subframe - if not corroded through then fully protect it

Saw one of these on autotrader for 13k the other day, Ridiculous amount of car for the money, regardless of reliability issues. However I agree with you on the driving experience. It's more of a GT car that you want to drive slowly, with windows down in an old built up village. Not a car with much thrill of speed, or tech.
@Jimbo8012

And that £13k example would be never ending misery. I too saw a purple one on Autotrader that had a bad body kit and had done 160,000 miles for £13k. The body work was utterly shocking. God knows what the mechanical condition was like. Wouldn't touch it with a bargepole. Probably a spares and repairs job that you'd try to cannibalize for parts.

Mine cost me £15000 for a 61000 mile one. After servicing it and new discs , pads and 2 tyres it added up to £21000. But well worth it. 👌.
Prefer the GranCabrio, as the very generous back seats mean you could take three friends out comfortably all day. Tiny boot takes away the GT element though.
Thanks for the honest review of this car. I was gonna get a 2013 which might have been a little bit better but I think you're right. The Germans take it all day long. Porsche ,You can't beat it they are absolutely amazing!! I live in America and sometimes wish I could see Europe. Cause my country is starting to suck. Freest country in the world with the Tons of rules and regulations. Getting harder to make money. But maybe it's like that everywhere you go I don't know What I do know is. Porsche is it I've had a couple of them older ones and I love them!!
Hey Joel - do you want to try my i3?
I'm in the market for buying this November I'm looking at the db9 and this and I'm torn between them. I no the db9 v12 because my parents have one but love the look of the Maserati and the noise but to watch this I'm sliding to the Aston
Currently looking at these, Had a C63 for a year ( 6.2 v8 ) which was lovely but gone back to a transporter for work etc, Got a V8 itch and one local with 22,000 miles for 20 thousand. You cannot compare these Joel to modern stuff either, it's a gt car.
Issue is the 4.2.. 4.7 totally different engine/ exhaust setup it’s epic
You may want to test drive the 4.7L MC Stradale version. It's a world of difference.
Did u do anything to the exhaust?
You’ve done a review on the dynamics of the car without pressing the sport button! Maybe I missed it but thing you’d find quite a difference. Your reviewing one car not both if you haven’t pressed it!
Sounds amazing but very temperamental. I had the older 4.2 for around 3 years - plagued with electrical gremlins. Apparently the later 4.7 was much better.
Hello. If is possible you have to drive the Aston Martin Vantage v8 4.3 380 h.p. The sound its is amazing too. Best regards from Spain.

Rite / Right. Can answer this one very easily. As a petrol head. Car trader and former Maser owner of 5 years . The answer is a yes to scratch the itch. Insanely Beautiful. Drive is MEH. Kinda twitchy with too much power. Sounds awesome but not on par with 5cyl or v10 v12 or other v8s. But after the inch scratched sadly it’s a no. The brand is all image. Poor fit finish and economy is unusable 8-13 MPG. They need be parked up Sorn. Sadly. Just a lovely vista out your front door

Swab the buttons with some alcohol, the one you find at your local chemist. It'll fix the stickiness, then it's just up to the owner to keep it clean...
@bigmacdaddy1234

That won't fix it. The stickiness is within the materials and just comes out again.
I bought an SL55 AMG just an absolute monster
If you can get an Aston for under £20k that's the one I'd go for 👍 or a Jag XKR with the 5.0 supercharged V8 😁😁
I drove my friend's Ghibli with 5k mileage. He insists i do a burn out for thrill. I wouldn't do it again.
I think your expectations were too high of it to be honest. It’s a GT cruiser with a lovely exhaust note, it’s not a sports car. They’re also typically Italian in that the engine has to be REVVED(!) to get the most of it. They don’t have any low down torque. The sticky buttons is annoying for sure but ultimately a minor gripe when you compare to the Germans with their dire issues.
I would go Jaguar XKR for something reliable, however, for a more cool thing, maybe an Aston DB7 V12.

Any Granturismo 2014 or newer is more reliable than the Jaguar. This cars are mostly trouble free if used regularly and well maintained.

Just for that noise……no other reason, other than it runs a close second to an Aston Martin vantage, as the most beautiful car to look at…..👍🇮🇲🔥💪
997 or a V8 Vantage for me Mazzer looks great and sounds impressive but it’s a big heavy car with rock hard seats and a cheap feeling interior equally shared with the F360
Ghibli owner. I tend to feel that all the downsides to a Maserati (and there are a few) can usually be countered with... yeah but it's a Maserati. And that's what is keeping me from buying another car.
