105 and Ultegra shifters that get stuck, you need to put some degreaser (I use Elbow Grease) and hot water through the mechanism, then fully dry and spray with WD40. The white grease that Shimano put on them dries up and stop it from shifting. I’ve had to do it on my Ultergras and they work lovely now

That's cracking advice, Andy, I'll give that a go, as I now have two left shifters doing the same thing, my one and the second hand one I bought on ebay for my son's bike! Hoping I can eventually get them both working. Cheers for the tips. 👌

Layer up. Do not get fooled by cycling marketing by popping on there winter gilet on top of your thin winter jacket is going to keep you warm it won’t. Sadly lots of cyclists nowadays go for the look less on the weather and the road conditions.

Yeh, I wear a merino wool base layer, a short sleeved jersey, a merino wool lined gilet over that and then a long sleeved merino wool jersey on top. Agree 👍 Hubby and I were always advised by our cycling club leader (who’s cycled for years and raced in his younger days) 11 degrees cover your knees to keep those ligaments and muscles warm. At present we tog up in winter gear appropriate for winter temps (feel like temp), same in Autumn/Spring temps. Low teens I don’t wear shorts. Now I’m getting older I feel the cold more 😂

However, as our kids have got older, their weekend sporting activities/clubs have increased and so we've had to start bringing our start times forward more and more! It isn't so much an issue in the summer, as it's nice and light but by 'eck it's depressing in the winter! 😂

Peter - I wouldn't be placing any big bets on your statement that "ice rarely forms on a hill"😯. Also, Brum on your gravel bike: depending on the climbing (can't think it'd be much from Essex) - is very doable and a good achievement so I say go for it*. *I'm sure you've got these covered but: allow plenty of time, break it in to 20/25 mile segments and have a Plan B for baling out purposes. Bon chance!

  • @petertreadway

Yeh, perhaps you’re right about the ice actually, Rob! I don’t think I really thought that one through! 😬😂 On the Birmingham front, Komoot shows an elevation of 3650ft over the 108 miles, which averages out to 34ft for every mile. That initially seemed quite a lot, but looking back at my rides from last year, the vast majority were higher than that and it’s exactly the same as the century ride I did to Richmond Park and back on Christmas Eve, so should be doable. 🤞🏼
