    I feel watches are good investments, as I'm a collector myself. I own a Fears Brunswick Pt i bought in switzerland from an AD some years ago, Even though it's such an iconic piece, I'd like to do some research and find out its worth to potentially make some profit.

    Investment vs Speculation Investment: something that makes you money while you own it. Eg. A good business, stocks with dividends, a rental property Speculation: something you hope will increase in value while you own it in order to sell for a profit. Eg. Watches, the house you live in, and stocks without dividends. Watches are a speculation, not an investment, and generally a crap one at that.

    I don't believe for a second that watches are worthwhile investments, or that they have any reasonable expectation to appreciate outside of a handful of models. My question is this: can you craft a collection that merely holds it's original value such that if you needed to liquidate you could at least break even?

  • @gaffs82
    @gaffs82Ай бұрын

    I think there’s two things to look at when it comes to watch invest-ability. The watch should be either uber rare, or a limited version of a classic. For example, a rare dial day date or a Kermit submariner. Or you could just get a more common watch and keep it unworn in a safe for 10 years.

  • @richyrich7288

    You're SPOT ON when it comes to your analysis of the Tudor pink. While I love watches, I don't ever regard them as investment pieces for a future profit/return. That's what real estate, stock market and other investment vehicles are for. Anyone who purchases watches for speculation is taking a risk and many years for maybe little to no return on initial purchase price. Let the buyer beware and live at yoru own peril. Cheers!

    Disagree on the premise that Rolex’s gig is to create hype watches. What have they created with the intention of hyping? They create pretty much the same watches as they’ve always done and I’ll have the public to hype for them. The OP celebration dial is the only one that really comes to mind. Whereas Tudor have created this pink dial chronograph and the Coke GMT

    All the collectors doing so because of future "value" in terms of fiat gains are in for a rude awakening. The product cycle is declining. I love watches, but it's over. For all those that think it's a good idea, great. If that is the case, how are the top hats you own? Or horse and buggies?

    Tudor is not an investment brand at this stage. Especially when buying at RRP. Yes, there might be some initial hype, but that will inevitably fade. Rolex continue to move more towards precious metal offerings, as per the lack of steel releases watches and wonders this year, then maybe Tudors stainless watches may become more investable.

    Watches might be a store of value, but they are not investments. Few watches go up in value over time and guessing the ones that will is impossible. I remember being offered a Nautilus at a 30% discount in 2009 because nobody wanted them. Stocks pay dividends. They can up in value over time. An S&P index fund gives you diversification with no research. Unlike watches, you don't have to insure, maintain or securely store stocks. And the cost to move out a million dollars of stock is a few bucks. When you sell a watch, you are paying massive fees on a percentage basis.

  • @m.e.p.r
    @m.e.p.rАй бұрын

    My opinion: Only a very very small percentage of watches constitute “good investments”, I mean that in the traditional sense…over longer time frames. The watches that do see meaningful returns are typically found at the higher end of the market, not the lower and middle entry points. Watches are certainly not very liquid assets either. Even at the higher end, the market for some of these super rare/expensive watches appeals to a very specific, relatively small group of collectors. Most watches are easily out performed by other asset classes in the long term. But, if you have the opportunity to cash in on short term hype, like the David Beckham, Pink Dial Tudor, then there is money to be made for sure!

    You invest in your happiness while wearing the watch. Should not treat it as an investment and lock them up in the safe. Most ppl calling themselves collectors are merely speculators as they lean more into the thought of how much a watch will be worth in dollars and cents after a certain period of time. 2 different meaning for investment and speculation

    In Warren Buffet‘s terms watches are not productive assets. Like precious metals they don’t produce anything that could result in a cash inflow, a dividend or anything like that. Hence, they are not investments by definition. Of course they can appreciate in value (99% will not tough), but finding the 1% requires skills and then waiting 30 years is a pain. If you can have a 6% dividend yield on stocks I’m afraid you should forget about watches as an investment.😢

    CZ T4YC. On the other hand, collectables tend to be the things you wanted, when you were young, but either owned and wrecked, or just couldn't afford. So if the watch hobby moves forward as a whole, then people will want to collect. And the quality of manufacture nowadays makes this much more sensible than in the past, when most brands were poorly made. I can see an upside. Time will tell.
