I think after you have children your stamina should be randomized everyday.

  • @FaerieDust

That's a great idea tbh - it introduces a new difficulty modifier in the late game, and would make the choice of having kids something to seriously think about and plan for (making sure you want that added difficulty, and you'd want to have a lot of automation set up as well)

  • @thenagito

Maybe that's true for the first year you have them, then as they grow older the randomized stamina slowly get higher and higher values, and then eventually it's back to the high parts, to show that they're grown up and not being little shits every second

I don’t want the babies to have a mechanical purpose, but I want them to have like. A purpose of interest. Even if its just them aging enough to like, have dialogue or have a couple of heart events, that’s enough. They don’t need to improve my farm or do chores or whatever but I want them to be actual NPCs instead of a hatrack. (Thats what sea urchins are for!)

Totally agree! It's like you spend the entire game building relationships with everyone in town, having all these cutscenes, spend more time after marriage developing your relationship to then have kids and they do nothing. At least your spouse still goes to town and festivals and stuff. The kids literally never leave the house. It feels totally meaningless when a big part of the reason I love games like these are for the relationships you build.

Haley isn't as depressed as Shane but that doesn't mean she isn't in a bad situation from her perspective. She's in a place she hates and can't leave. The farmer is the literal embodiment of everything she doesn't like about Pelican Town. She's MEAN but a lot of her reactions are because she doesn't want anything to do with anyone there. It isn't until she starts to like the player that she understands and loves the Valley as well. Does it make up for it? No. But she also isn't just mean to be mean. She just legit finds farming gross and can't understand why you'd ever want that life.

Instead of being in Pelican Town with the same characters we know I would like something that is set in a different part of the same world and has a different story line. Perhaps a prequel management type game (think 'Papers Please' or more accurately the recent 'Apature Desk Job' as it would involve story events) In which you play as the SV mc in the months before opening the envelope, working in Joja, this could reinforce the distaste most SV players have towards Joja and show the reason the MC opened that envelope in the first place.

Part of it is having the patience to play a game for so long. 1 year is actually a pretty big timesink in Stardew for most people, who will try to make the most of every day and can only stomach so much of the game. What helped me get past year 1 was learning to take the game slowly. I still play "fast" by most people's standards, but I don't feel like resetting anymore if I don't get the community center done in year 1 (still did, sort of. Spring 1 of year 2 was when I finished it.)

Ideas for story progression: as time goes on, things might change about the other villager's relationships that have nothing to do with you. Maybe by Year 3, Shane and Haley will have warmed up a little even if you don't gain any friendship with them at all. Robin and Demetrius might get divorced on their own and possibly become romanceable. After a few years, there could be a chance that npcs will start marrying each other, as long as you haven't started a relationship with them. Sebastian could leave town, like he expresses interest in at one point. I'm picturing this as like, an opt in system - like you could turn story progression on or off in the options at the beginning of the game - and random as to what exactly happens and when. I've had this idea bouncing around for awhile and I'm only recently getting into modding, but it might be interesting to consider how it could work.

I'm on the "agree" side when it comes to children in stardew. Marrying your spouse is a big ordeal and deal, you have to upgrade your house, raise their affection, give them a bouquet, snag a mermaid pendant on a rainy day, and then you get not just a cinematic of your marriage, but your spouse moves in where you can interact with them, give them a kiss, they'll do chores occasionally. Meanwhile, your kid in stardew is less interactable than the stray cat you pick up on the first week in town? Really? Your OWN CHILD is prone to the same level of neglect you give your pet (they exist on your farm and walk around, and that's all they do, and it doesn't matter if you fill their water bowl or even pet them, though at least you can do that much)? You're telling me you can't make silly faces at them? Put them in your lap? Hold their hand as they stand up when they're still in the crawling phase? And as someone else pointed out, if your child ever aged past "toddler" you could have them interact with vincent or jas or whatever.

I find it weird about the Robin/Demtrius one. Honestly I think there should be a thing about Marnie and Louis, like maybe they make it more official. Leah feels like an outsider because she is. There's a sense of relatability knowing that your character and Leah share the same situation. She's like a blank slate that slowly takes shape as you interact with her more. Whereas Robin acts like an old friend to the player. She's attractive in the sense that she feels like home. You don't have to start from scratch to build her up because she's already been built. Literally and figuratively. That being said, I chose Penny. She was the closest contender to Robin. Another go-getter that can be strong when she wants to and cries when she needs to.

@@pushra9901 That's a consequence of friendship not having a separate 'progress bar' to romance. One of Penny's greatest goals in life is to start a family; of course a romantic interest saying they don't want kids would make her think "Oh, maybe they're not The One." A more realistic outcome would be for that to hurt your romantic chances with her without hurting your friendship, but that would be tedious to program.

(Penny heart event spoilers in this comment. Also, I started writing this with no idea this rant would develop, sorry for the wall of text) Penny has multiple heart events where your responses to her questions or actions can be very polarizing in friendship points. She is by far the most intense about her personal feelings of all the characters, and it seems that disagreeing with her causes her to intensely dislike you. In her 8 heart event she asks you if you would be a guest speaker for her class with Jas and Vincent. If you respond with the "No... I can't stand kids" option you lose ALL of the friendship you've garnered up to that point. I would understand if she disagreed with that sentiment and it made her evaluate whether the player is someone she would want to be with romantically, maybe even locked her out of being a romanceable option. But she just immediately throws your entire friendship under the bus without a second thought. Even weirder in the same event if you did decide to accept her offer of being a guest speaker she will ask the player if they ever considered being a parent, but a negative response here only has a tiny effect on friendship. It's definitely intentionally put into the game that way but it feels strange. In her 10 heart event, Penny has you meet her at the spa and confesses her feelings towards you. If you respond with "I don't feel that way about you" she bursts into tears and the player loses all friendship points with her in this outcome as well. This interaction is more understandable I think, she took a risk on the player's character that is a big leap outside her comfort zone and she gets crushed. But once again I think that throwing away the entire friendship with no tolerance for what the player character's feelings are is an indicator of her emotional maturity. This second example doesn't irritate me as much as the first one because it's a very real situation many people encounter in their lives, but it still leaves a bitter taste in my mouth. In an earlier event you encounter Penny trying to help George with his mail, pushing his wheelchair aside without his permission and he voices his dislike of her actions. The player can intervene on either side of the argument, taking Penny's side or George's side. It also gives the player the option to pass by without interjecting in their argument. If you take George's side, you lose a fairly large chunk of your friendship points with her and gain none from George. If you take her side, George feels ashamed for his actions and apologizes. This particular interaction has always irritated me a bit because regardless of whether George needed help or not Penny shouldn't have pushed his wheelchair without permission. But the only positive outcome possible is to take Penny's side. If taking George's side resulted in increased friendship with him at the cost of friendship with Penny, it would be entirely understandable. But as it is there aren't any options in this event that I like to take because Penny learns nothing either way. Lastly, this is a bit nitpicky but Penny is the only NPC who hates Rabbit's Foot as a gift. I'd understand that if she were a vegetarian, or expressed an affinity for rabbits or something. But among her loved items are Sandfish and Tom Kha Soup, which contains shrimp. None of her dialogue (unless I've missed something) indicates why she is so opposed to rabbit's foot as a gift. A bit more explanation from her, even in passing, would help the player learn this information within the game instead of it seeming more like a "gotcha" to players that don't rely endlessly on the wiki during their play.

I'd wouldn't mind a Stardew sequel in the same manner that Pokemon has sequels. Same format with a different village, new villagers, new monsters and item, different and new quests, and so forth. Or a sequel that allows to explore and interact with more of the world rather than being farm focused. Overall I'm open to the idea provided Concerned Ape puts his heart and happiness into it, and its not a some cheap cashgrab like most sequels are. Until then, I have mods.

Personally, game-wise, I feel like the children are basically glorified pets. The only thing you do, is interact with them to build friendship, like you do the cat or the dog. There's no other indicator of any kind. Now I'm not saying they should be farm labor when they get older or anything. But even just giving them a basic route to cover in the Valley would be nice. Or maybe they also join the other kids at school, SOMEthing. That's also kind of the same problem with the spouses (though a little better now). Once you've married them, they just kind of hang around your farm house every day, and don't really do anything anymore. They should still have a life, and still have their old routines, with MAYbe a slight change on one or two days in the week, where THEN they hang around the house. But Penny should still be teaching, Leah should still be arting, Sebastian should still be Coding... You know?

I think making the kids have a purpose would be frustrating to people like me who don’t want to have them. Imagine if the game forced you to have children for perfection. Even something where they help around the farm would be a bit frustrating to me because it’s kind of like getting a free junimo hut or something like that. I can agree though that it would be fun if they could play with the other kids and not be confined within the house lol

  • @itisyerdad

I think by "purpose," it means to just actually have child and marriage mechanics. Not that they would be required for Perfection. As it is, they don't really do anything or grow up. You can't play with them. They never develop. I'm working on a mod right now that is meant to give marriage and children some mechanics that make them seem less like weird afterthoughts.

Or they help on the farm, but they cost, so in the end, there is no benefit (just like kids in real life!). They could also have some form of roommate mechanic more than just krobus

On the question of if there's a right and a wrong way to play SV, I'd go with 'Agree', because I definitely found myself at times playing in a way where I got stuck in the routine of having to do everything optimally everyday. It got to the point I felt the entire in-game day went to doing the same stuff on the farm everyday. I ended up feeling stuck in a loop that drained out the fun in the experience, and I eventually stopped. Later I made a new save and discovered if I dropped the need to always do what I "should", and just followed my creative flow, I had a much better time. I've noticed other people also doing what I did, feeling that the routine just became to boring, and I would definitely say this is a 'wrong' way of playing the game, as you're actively not having fun.

I think it would be cool if there was an option for you to play Stadew as your kid in a second generation, and the town itself changes accordingly. Like, you'd keep the farm (it might even get expanded a little?) but the people will have aged and the town would have changed. If you didn't marry Sebastian, he would move to the city. Clint would have greyer hair/be balding. Either Mayor Lewis would still be mayor or someone else-- maybe Kent?-- is. That or Kent gets a friendship arc with Linus and inherits the adventurer's guild. Maybe Pierre and Caroline split up after Abigail moves out, unless you get both of them to a high enough friendship level beforehand. Or Alex's sports career might end early via injury, giving him some parallel character growth in absence of his grandpa. Sam might also leave to serve in the army, or might end up becoming an independent music creator. Gus would have probably hired an apprentice/sous chef, maybe Vincent or Jas or even Shane. Maybe a new family moved in, or two or three. Qi would give a separate set of tasks to the next generation if you want to unlock him again. There would be a new "big bad" that the child/new player character would have to work against. Maybe Joja again, maybe, idk, another war between the magical creatures like OG Stardew hints at but this time it's sea creatures vs. humanity (since the game already has a fair amount of lore there) but humanity (mostly) doesn't even know it. I just think it would really add some depth to the game to see these people and their lives change, and living it as your child would be a cool way to naturally (and optionally) progress that way. Also unrelated but the fact that you got Argon of all people there to resort to violence at the end there quite frankly speaks for itself.

I think the only way I'd be content with a "sequel" of sorts is if it's a game in the same universe, but isn't a direct sequel of Pelican Town. I would love to see a game with a fully fleshed out Zuzu City, and while there is a mod for it, I'd love to see what Concerned Ape would have in mind for it. Granted, this could be added in an expansion like Ginger Island, but having a stand-alone game with its own 30-something characters is something I'd love to see! As for Pelican Town itself, I'd rather see a prequel than a sequel.

Talking about children in Stardew though, I agree I don’t need my children to do farmwork or to have some practical purpose, but the fact is they don’t really give the feeling of having a child. You don’t get to see your child learn to speak, develop any kind of personality, or become an individual in any meaningful way. I think they need a rework not for purpose, but for a more interesting experience.

7:40 idk about a sequel, but they could definitely do a spinoff type game where it takes place in/around one of the other regions surrounding Stardew (Zuzu City, other islands, etc). It could include a lot of similar aspects (farming, mining, romance etc) but have a separate story and different characters. CA is so great at world building and I'd love to see them expand on this universe, but I think the actual Stardew story is perfect and doesn't really need a sequel or to be expanded much more. 8:29 I think a mod (instead of a sequel) where the game takes place in the future would be great. Everyone is older, the bachelor-bachelorettes are now parents, Vincent and Jas are adults, and the older townspeople have passed. It would be cool to see Leah as the new carpenter, or Shane taking Marnie’s position, etc. The premise could be you (new farmer) inherits the farm from your parent (original farmer). The now older bachelor-bachelorette’s kids could be the new bachelor-bachelorettes, and maybe even older Vincent and Jas. The town could change slightly as well showing how it’s changed after the decades between the games, like new shops or different styles houses, gravesites for george and Evelyn, etc.

Weighing in on the children thing: There's a lot of people out there that don't want to have kids in real life. I think tying some achievement to having kids in Stardew would, intentionally or not, be judging them for that choice, and would make the game less inviting to them. But as a standalone option, I think it would be nice for Stardew Valley children to grow up and leave to live in the city, or possibly help work on the farm in exchange for allowance or something like that. The child mechanic is not fleshed out much and could definitely be expanded on. Ultimately, I'm happy that children aren't really important to the gameplay because I enjoy getting to choose how to run my save file, but that's just me.

This dosnt really apply to SV characters but I thought I’d share. (:

I completely agree. IRL, first impressions make a big difference. If I meet someone and they are rude to me, I'm likely to not want to speak with them again. I would not reach out to win them over. In SDV, I cut em some slack, mostly because it isn't personal. First, they aren't talking to IRL me, they are talking to my character. And they don't know anything about me. This gives me enough patience to learn that there is more to them. The same could be said IRL, that there is more to people, but there are a lot more people I meet IRL. Whereas in SDV, there are a limited amount of characters, and I don't really want to ignore people over some slight.

I think there should be a stardew valley prequel wher you play as grandpa in his time

Friends and Opinions, just perfect. Also I think that is better that the babies don't have any purpose, because no every person have babies for the same reasons/circumstances. In the valley every NPC is different, and you as a Farmer, Also are unique. You are free to choose any purpose, if you want to have a purpose anyway. In this way, any choice is the good choice. With an specific path or goal, you are giving up almost infinite posibilities.

9:30. honestly i think, that there should be a sequel, just where there are new characters (like a female morris with different hair and traits or something like that, or more characters you can date) and maybe a new map

It would be a lot of work to make, but it would be cool if you got different children depending on who your spouse is and they grew up to be teens and had dialogue. A mechanic where you have to actually take care of them to raise them would be cool as well.

Tbh i was thinking about children in SV aaaand i dunno.... Like yeah when they small they may attend school with others, but at the same time it would be interesting to see them interact with our farm somehow, play with a doggy or cat, pet animals so it can be sorta count as we petted them, like make them being more interactive? with the game world not just being some pixels going around your house. It would be nice if they were livable? i guess? Like they interact with us, attend fairs with us, find something, do something, but maybe its just too much. And why we always have boy and girl, why not twins or 2 boys/girls?)

the first time i was getting into stardew my friend had downloaded a mod that gives any item they want and many other "cheaty" things and was gaslighting me into thinking they were just getting everything and making an insane amount of money in the first year. (found out because i called them out when we were playing together and they made it so all the crops finished when i cam e back out from the farm house) i struggled a lot with thinking i wasnt good and was doing something wrong. i recently started my own save with the new update to give it another chance (as a couple different friends mentioned about it and were trying to make me understand why they love the game so much) and i have loved it and have been able do my own thing

We gotta get nino kito up in here, also i think that rather than a sequel, we could have a game about the other side in the war between where stardew valley is and where kent comes from

Great video and it was very funny that Sal faked the creators answers for the Penny Q. On that topic, I'd love to know the creators opinions on all the characters. Like yes, obviously Penny is Sals most hated character, but who is the most hated or loved character in the other creators opinions. And totally go with prompts showing your own opinion again, lol. Mostly I wanna know ppls opinions on Linus living in a tent (should giving Linus a house be a similar option like building Pam one?), Marnie & Lewis's secret relationship (should them becoming a public couple be part of the later game?) and we can't forget to ask the very important question "is tomatoes a fruit or vegetable?" (like yes, they are technically a fruit, but I always answer vegetable, bc that's what we socially call them and see them as)

Going off what you said about Lewis and Marnie, I always thought CA should add an election for mayor so other characters or your character could run the town. Curious if any of the creators have talked about that idea.

Tomatoes are fruit and even though I hate Demetrius, I had to agree with him on that one. Cucumbers, pumpkins etc. as well. That's just the way it is, guys.

About sequel: I think it's... heavily depends on what we count as sequel. I mean, I don't think I will like having another game in slightly changed Pelican town + I doubt that town can change much if we're not like making century long timeline in between the games If we go in way for example sequel of My Time at Portia did, though, I would kinda appreciate it What they did: they moved us into another city - Sandrock - with few different mechanics, a bit of new ones, and different vibe + reasons for our character be there (in Portia we wanted to learn more about our dad, in Sandrock if I remember correctly we had a dream but little to no room for proper realization in our hometown + Sandrock was in need of another master since one of old ones retired) Aaand about right and wroway to play: imo, only really wrong way to play is when you're not enjoying it or not letting people who play with you enjoy it - and it works on every game, from SV to Skyrim Babies: in both My Time at Portia and Stardew Valley I'm a little annoyed that they don't age enough to say sentient sentence or be at least at same level child NPC in town/city have Though in Portia due to graphics there's really neat genetic system - if you make child with Gust/Ginger (they're siblings + kids of a mayor with pretty diverse faces already its especially noticeable) because child can inherit traits not just from your character and your spouse, but also from shown relatives

I think for the "does SV need a sequel" i would definitely say no, not because I don't want it, it wouldn't really fit. Although i think a spin off would be cool, maybe have you play on the other regions, or the other nation yours was fighting against in SV. But on the spin off you are playing with different plans, goals and threats even. A fun thing that i really enjoy is that in a game called "Shadow over Loathing" the game would actually read your safe file from the previous game called "West of Loathing" (two amazing games also), so it would be really cool if CA can do that and just have your character to meet your SV farmer, assuming the two ootions are "helping everyone escape" or "go corporate, glory to the nation"

    1. Disagree. Now while the concept of a Robin divorce seems interesting, especially considering that Demetrius treats Sebastian bad, you shouldn't be able to divorce different people as the player and alsp that would lead to some issue. Demetrius is a real NPC with hearts, heart events and stuff. His schedule is dependant on him living there, his 6 heart event is a conversation with Robin and a lot of his dialogues are about his family. He is also in Maru's 2 and 10 heart event and Maru and Sebastian mention him in their dialogues. A lot of the game would need to be rewritten and re coded, for this to make sense. The bigger issue is that I don't think Robin should be marriage-able. First off she is an important Shopkker that you need to progress in the game. Removing her from her work and making her stay at your house would have a massive impact in the game as your access to these upgrades would change. There is aslo the issue of wy would she charge you money for her work if you are married. Don't you share funds? Why not? Like a lot of weird issues. There is a reason you can't marry any shopkeer (besides Krobus, but 1. it isn't marriage, it is living together and 2.while I love him, he isn't that important for the game). It would also lead to a weird situation where you could be Sebastians Ex and dating Robin or vice-versa. Which is not something I don't want in my chill farming game. Also, what would happen to Sebastian? Would he move in with you? Would he live alone in the basement of a big house, only getting money from coding for everything? Would he be forced to move in with Demetrius? Making Robin marriable would cause a cascade of issues that would need a major rewritting of the character to solve, which I don't want. 2. I don't know. This brings up a very interesting question about what does advancing heartpoints mean. Because if you loose heartpoints with someone do they go back? Like george stops being homophobic at 10 hearts, but he goes back to it if you drop back down to 9. Does this mean he became homophobic again, he only acted non-homophobic because he liked you or the game didn't expect you to loose heartpoints? Like do Shane and Haley actually learn their behaviour was bad or do they only act nicer because they have grown to like you? This question depends on your intepretation of heart points. 3. Disagree. It is a perfectly fine and fun game on its own and with HC already in the works, I feel like I don't need more Stardew. 4. Hmm, i don't know. This depends on what "play" means. For example if all someone did in stardew valley is build swatzikas and then spam every online community with pictures of that I would consider that to be wrong. But, does that constitute "playing" the game or just using it as a medium for image creation? 5. Kinda Agree. Like the top comment said, they should do more than just walk around aimlessly. They should actually like do something. 6 Strongly Disagree. There are Demetrius, Lewis and Pierre.
